Why "Six Pack Ab Workouts" Are A Waste Of Time - In today's video I explain why the typical "10 minute ab workout" routines that you find plastered all over KZbin are ultimately a waste of time if your goal is to lose belly fat and achieve a defined set of six pack abs. It's not that ab TRAINING should be avoided - the problem is this misguided notion that the abs are some sort of "unique" muscle that should be trained in some special way and that you need to be dedicating your time to entire dedicated ab workouts. The abs are a muscle just like any other and so the same basic muscle building principles apply. There's no need to perform endless ab exercises with hundreds of reps at a time, since spot reducing fat isn't possible and the only goal of ab training is to hypertrophy the abdominals in order to make them stand out more visibly. That can be done with just a few basic ab exercises added into you regular training plan and you don't need an entire "six pack ab workout" performed multiple days a week or even every day. The problem though is that so many people are searching for the "best ab workout" or thinking that some gimmicky "flat stomach workout" is going to lean down their midsection in a matter of days, and that's why all these popular channels such as Chloe Ting, Athlean-X, Blogilates, Chris Heria, V-Shred and more are constantly uploading these ab routines to KZbin even though the videos themselves aren't that helpful for the intended goal. Hope you find this video helpful today and if you have any comments in regards to ab training workouts or how to get a six pack then be sure to leave them down below.

always hate how people say ab crunches are the best way to remove stomach fat or lose weight or get a six pack. when I was 10 or 11 I bought into that shit hard and I can tell you Ab crunches do none of those things by themself. I would easily do hundreds of ab crunches a day and thousands a week you know what I got, not a six pack, permanent damage to my spine.

It's going to stop working eventually. I went up to 25kg plates on my back but eventually stopped. I just do planks now for warm up and posture correction. But planks are always a good start 👍. Those who skipped them often don't learn proper bracing and pelvic tilt, TVA activation etc. until much later. I would advice adding bridges and hollow body holds once you have mastered planks.

The second I get lower than 12.5% I feel like dog shit I feel best at 15-20% bodyfat. I just about have a 4 pack at 12.5% but its not worth it for me. @@rameeziqbal8711Nah, what he said is pretty much true and he just called out the bs going all over the social media regarding "abs". Abs are already there, it's just the body fat covering it. Going through a calorie deficit focusing mainly on fat reduction for a few months will already give you visible abs. Stimulating those muscles through exercise and reaching close to failure will make them look better considering your aim is regarding aesthetics ( ofc those muscles will grow stronger ). Its upto you whether to follow a proper exercise routine or to solely work on abs that too for just 6-7 minutes thinking it'll actually work. If it was this easy, every average guy would roam around with abs

It’s a lot more than just an ab routine that’s going to get your midsection ripped! Diet, and overall exercise to build muscle & burn fat is the only way you’ll get that shredded abdominal region. After you’re comfortable running 3-5 miles, your body will be able to handle speed workouts. 4-6 x 400m, 200m, 100m reps is a good workout. Every workout I start by warming up a bit, arm circles, jumping jacks, and a few other things, just to get the blood flowing. Then, I do 4 sets of hanging leg raises and planks, supersetting by doing the leg raises then immediately going into a plank for 60 seconds, then resting for 30 seconds, or so, in between.

Thank you Sean this video would be helpful to a lot of people particularly those new to working out and get fooled into the click bait videos like that one with over 300M views. Though for me in my situation I do dedicated core work by 'core' this is my core of the body abs, lower back as I train calisthenics, to execute certain exercises e.g. front lever, planche, press to handstand requires a strong core to hold the body in positions. I train a core circuit in an A.M.R.A.P. style - technically treating my core differently to other muscles - for about 10mins 2 - 3 times a week usually lower body sessions near the end of workout right before cool down stretching so in a way I do disagree but agree on the basis that doing ab workouts for abs is a lie.

I always did squats and deadlifts and all the main compound lifts pretty well, but every time I tried to move my core while laying down I was always shaking a lot. The strenght was there, and they were visible, but the movement itself was little unconfortable because of a bad mind-muscle connection to that specific movement.

He is saying doing a crap ton of reps of random ab exercises isn’t actually doing anything, especially if you aren’t progressively overloading i.e. increasing the difficulty as you get better like a lot of those “get abs” videos prescribe a set number of reps to do everyday. Instead, he suggested doing low reps with lots of progressive overload like you would other exercises and getting rid of fat through full body exercises as well. Correct me if I’m not quite understanding though.

These routines are pretty good for building good ab muscles at least at the start, since most beginners honestly couldnt make it all the way through one of these workouts. They usually do provide a lot of mechanical tension if you haven't trained abs before, and putting them in a 15 minute daily routine is a good way to keep consistent. Obviously if you find it easy then you can do harder variations but I still think they can be a great starting point

I always wondered what's up with the ab obsession on social media, but it makes sense what you say. People either thinking doing such workouts excessively will trim down belly fat, or just being generally obsessed with getting a six pack. I definitely think a lean six pack looks great, but I genuinely don't care about putting in as much effort as would be required of me to have constantly visible washboard abs. My goal is size over being lean, and thus I really don't mind having a little bit of roundness to my stomach and having all of my muscles covered by a bit of fat. But I do care about being muscular and fit in general, which means my focus is more on the other muscle groups that have a bigger chance to pop at higher body fat, like chest, shoulders, arms, back and legs. If there's any muscle group I pay some extra attention to it's my back, because it's been extra weakened from many years of poor posture and kinda needs an extra boost. But I know that with a strong back should also come a strong core, or I might just... topple over in the other direction instead lol. But for some reason I struggle with finding good, solid back and ab exercises that work for me, so I do watch those kinda videos quite a lot for advice. I'm just not friends with the pull up bar yet (I figure I'll tackle it when I'm stronger) and those damn obliques are hard to target. So my only real goal with my ab workouts is core strength and to work out all of my body evenly. I can't just completely forget about my abs just because I'll likely never see them with my goal to keep a higher body fat percentage. I too get annoyed with this abundance of excessive and fast paced ab workout videos that seem to geared towards... well, clearly not me. This video is a breath of fresh air. Thank you for being straight forward about this.
@Semiotichazey

I think one of the most important functions of the abs is to maintain core stability, meaning that it's valuable to do isometric exercises where you resist movement rather than move under resistance. I get a lot of value out of plank rows. It's just a high plank with a wide leg stance, and you alternate picking each hand off the floor for two seconds. The goal is to only move your arm and avoid changing any other element of your posture. Three sets, less than twenty reps, and I can really feel it. I throw in some hanging leg raises or L-seats from time to time. That's it for me. I don't have a six-pack but I have noticed more core stability during squats and deadlifts. If I really want a six-pack, I'll diet like crazy. Since I'm natty and in my forties, with uncooperative genetics, it's just not worth it for me.
@easypeasy7584
@easypeasy7584 2 жыл бұрын
I think you are mixing up things. Abs and core are in the same region, but are not necessarily the same. You do core exercises and they work and target other muscles than ab exercises. Your 'abs' is the rectus abdominis as well as obliques, wheres 'core' is the transversus abdominis, pelvic floor muscles as well as other muscles like mulitfidi etc. You activate all of them in a different manner (however some cant be activated actively). The most important thing about ab routines is to know how to properly activate and engage the right muscles and what movement they do. The main problem for people failing to grow abs is that they are using momentum or the movement itself isnt correct or the resistance is too low. Take sit ups. I love sit ups and they are a legit exercise. However, most people use momentum and only engage the hip flexor. But the job of the rectus abdominis is to bring the upper body closer to the pelvis, and not the upper body closer to the knees. If you sit up vertebra per vertabra it is such an exhausting exercise whereas I could do hundreds of sit ups in the wrong way. And it is a perfect exercise to add resistance. So once you know the function of each muscle, all those ab exercises are seriously legit. And for the deep transverse muscle it is important to do anti rotational exercises and plank variations as well in order to strengthen it. the TA Muscle works all the time and it get a good isometric workout in most of the exercises IF you know how to engage it (usually it is explained as "sucking in the belly button" but I dont think this explaination is very accurate because when I suck in my belly button I dont automatically engage my TA, you have to learn it properly, but it is pretty simple and doesnt take long). I couldnt squat properly without ky TA working really hard.

I get you're all about getting those hardcore trainings on gym but saying everyone should stop training at home and go to gym, put on 120kg on each hand and start lifting otherwise they're just wasting their time, is huuuuge BS here. Everyone needs to start somewhere and doing simple pushups will get you great results over time. Same with abs routines if you combine it with right amount of cardio and diet. Saying that something is a waste of time just shows how little your words are worth and how less respect you have for someones work.

the part when he talked about calisthenics or lifting weights at the gym,he's talking about maximizing muscle growth. And in terms of hypertrophy,lifting weights is definitely superior to any sort of home workouts. The keyword here is maximizing muscle growth,doing calisthenics will not maximize your muscle growth as well as lifting weights do. Sure they will get you a decent physique,but forget about getting big if calisthenics is all you do unless you have very good genetics which the average people don't.

Very sensible advice. I would bet that most people who are looking for a magical fat burning abs exercise ignore the fact that they are just eating the wrong foods or too much food in general. Proper diet and portion control are equally as important as exercise if not more so. Stop the gluttony!

He said that abs muscle shouldn't be treated differently than other muscle. Those 7-10 minutes abs workout routine is like doing bicep curl with low weight for minutes.. yes it will give you some result, but there's definitely more efficient way which he explained.

took 10 min to say: You can't spot burn fat from your body, The abs dedicated workouts on youtube are a waste of time You should still work on your abs BUT not on high reps but few reps with higher intenstity

Dude, I love this material. I have noticed that I have leaned down all over my body and noticed a few more toned spots that I've never noticed before. The stomach fat, however, doesn't seem to go away for a lot of people because, well... It's all they look at. Losing weight appears to be simply losing your gut for most. I've got a beer gut I'm working on shedding from years of drinking heavily, but I will say that seeing all of these tones and definitions all over my body in general are what keep me motivated to keep doing what I'm doing. Great video, brother!

Rope cable crunches are my favorite ab exercise, followed by ab wheel. Note on the leg raises: your hips need to rotate forward/up or you're mostly doing a hip flexor exercise, not an ab exercise. Really common to see people do this wrong. Edited for clarity.

@@anniezhang5663 the part that's actually working your abs is when your hips rotate forward, bringing the front your hip bones toward your chest. Like what happens when you do a crunch, but we your chest stationary and your hips moving instead.

Core strength is essential for proper posture when it comes to compound exercises. If you're wanting that six pack, diet harder and do longer, harder cardio.

Ab workouts are definitely not a waste of time, they are great. Doing both timed ab circuits and weight trained ab workouts are equally as beneficial. You want blocky extremely pronounced abs, weight train them. You want asthetic slimmer more defined abs hit circuits. It is all a matter of preference.

"Why Ab Workouts Are A Waste Of Time" is a little bit of clip baiting. Although in the actual video you explain it correctly. As you said they are not exactly a waste of time, they do strength the core muscle which is something really cool if you want to have big abs muscle and other positive stuffs, but they suck when it comes to burn fat. I would change the tittle to "Ab Workouts do not help to reduce belly fat (DO THIS INSTEAD!)". It explain better what are you trying to say in the video. Just a positive criticisms, I think your video is really good and more people should watch it, but the tittle does not correlate with the video topic, in my opinion.

The first time I have seen an article or video that finally gets it right. I figured this out for myself in the mid 70’s and got fantastic results (combined with a lowered calorie diet). I won 15 best abdominal trophies in AAU competitions back when there were subdivision awards for best body parts.I was asked repeatedly how I accomplished this but no one would ever believe me.

I read somewhere that the abs have two different types of fibers. One type responds to high weight low rep exercises (which require much stronger movements) and the other set of fibers respond to low weight high rep exercise. According to that article the best thing you can do for your abs is to do both
