Nam June Paik: Electronic Superhighway

I've been into video and vintage video effects for over 20 years and only discovered Nam June Paik in more recent years, his work is magnificent! I saw one of his great TV sculptures which was the Abraham Lincoln TV sculpture with video art displayed on the TVs at MONA Art Museum in Hobart, Tasmania, it was great to see in person!

IKR? My first TV art was in 1972: a sideways 14" b&w stuck in a wall sconce on uhf, so partying friends could adjust the image by dancing in front of it! Read the first book about video art: 📹 CINEMA by Gene Youngblood.

2.49 The shot of a Buddha meditating while watching itself on TV reminded me of a story that Michael Shōken Stone told about a temple he has visited in Japan. There was an altar with a mirror underneath that you could not see when standing up. When you did a prostration to the Buddha you saw your own reflection.

"Nonsense American TV" is an oxymoron! American TV is anything BUT nonsense, as it appeals to the highest aspirations of human longing!
