Robots, video synthesizers, experimental music-discover the multidimensional creative world of electronic artist Nam June Paik. Working across media since the 1960s, Paik established himself as an early innovator of video art, setting the scene for many of today’s contemporary art practices. Through groundbreaking performances, immersive artworks, and interdisciplinary collaborations, Paik established new approaches to music and television, and changed the way we look at screens.

You can also find interviews about art on view at the museum in the "Current Exhibitions" playlist.
About SFMOMA:
Founded in 1935 under the direction of Grace McCann Morley, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast dedicated to modern and contemporary art. While SFMOMA has yet to adopt an institution-wide land acknowledgment, we encourage audiences to view this film commissioned for our platform Open Space: sfmoma.me/3iKWF4c. Updates on the museum’s ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion work can be found here: sfmoma.me/3a46wzO.
In support of our commitment to institutional accountability, SFMOMA’s social media team will routinely moderate and respond to public comments to ensure they remain spaces of lively discourse and art appreciation from many voices.

I've been into video and vintage video effects for over 20 years and only discovered Nam June Paik in more recent years, his work is magnificent! I saw one of his great TV sculptures which was the Abraham Lincoln TV sculpture with video art displayed on the TVs at MONA Art Museum in Hobart, Tasmania, it was great to see in person!

IKR? My first TV art was in 1972: a sideways 14" b&w stuck in a wall sconce on uhf, so partying friends could adjust the image by dancing in front of it! Read the first book about video art: 📹 CINEMA by Gene Youngblood.
