Personally I really disagree on Persona 2 having poor gameplay. The Fusion Spell mechanic is a great way to experiment with combinations, and Group Contact is one of the most fun ways of mixing character interactions with the moment-to-moment gameplay of the battles. The battles flow incredibly well (with the exception of Innocent Sin's PSP rerelease where they slightly tweaked the way rounds worked, which hurt the pacing of fights by a fair bit - I'm glad that Eternal Punishment PSP reverted back to the way the PS1 versions played). I only have 3 problems with the game. First, its dungeon designs are uncreative and repetitive. Second, the encounter rate is too high - If the PSP rereleases had just lowered the encounter rate and raised the experience enemies gave you, instead of lowering the difficulty (along with IS not changing what I mentioned above) I would consider them to be the perfect rereleases. Third, grinding for cards is a poor fusion system, and could be easily reworked to lower the time you need to spend in order to gain cards from demons. I'm not against the games getting rereleases or remakes at all, because if they turn out to be not good or unfaithful to the originals in my eyes, I just won't play the remade versions, simple as that. But saying that Classic Persona has poor gameplay is just unfair criticism given all the great ideas the games tried out, and most of the time accomplished.
@PedroMatos4824 жыл бұрын
@@ofthenoseclan I mean, those three things you stated are exactly the reason I don't like their gameplay. Lame or annoying dungeons with a stupidly high random encounter rate (with the encounters not visible on the map) is a recipe to make me dislike a JRPG instantly, and the poor "fusion" system (which isn't even fusion, let's be fair, it's just essentially buying Personas) is just even worse when I go into this game with the experience from the incredibly fun fusions in mainline SMT and Personas 3-5. I didn't HATE P2's gameplay, but it was certainly a slog to get through, held up by its amazing story and characters. I honestly enjoyed P1's gameplay more.

old comment but despite having the likes of Akihiko, Kanji and makoto in later games being so unbalanced compared to everyone else, P1 really takes the cake of having the most unbalanced party balancing in the series as Elly and Nanjo are just really good party members that are available in both routes and cause of this if you wanted to optimize you will end up using both without getting the chance to use Brown and Reiji in the game period, what's funny is that Reiji who is advertised as the secret party member is actually kind of trashy to use with a very linear setup to work with and requires extensive investment to make him work really well for you compared to elly who can join much earlier and has really good affinity with the judgement arcana and can just offer you much more by comparison with less investment

The worst part of Persona is its lack of a truly accurate western release. The PlayStation version is a dumpster fire and the PSP version is easily preferable, but it's still not really ideal. It throws out the game's dark, ambient aesthetic in favor of a UI and soundtrack that attempts (and fails) to homogenize the game into the aesthetic of the modern games. There's a patch to reimplement some of the PlayStation music, but due to the difference in structure (there's far less songs and they're far shorter) it's a band-aid solution at best.
@GiordanDiodato4 жыл бұрын
it's really not any darker than P3-5 regardless, I think they threw out the original OST either because Soejima didn't like the original music or Okada pulled a Led Zeppelin, honoring one of the composers, who is dead though that doesn't explain why Innocent Sin PSP had the option of the original music.
@Pokemanic334 жыл бұрын
@@GiordanDiodato I suppose "dark" may not have been the most accurate term, but I Still stand by "ambient." It probably would have been more accurate to say "atmospheric" or something to the effect. But even if the tone did line up, it wouldn't explain why the PSP tracks are so much shorter and are reused so often. If they were working within hardware limitations then frankly they should have known that using lyrical music when the loops they were working with were ~1 minute in length would be repetitious and annoying. Persona 2 is an entirely different situation because not only did they include the original music, the new soundtrack is composed of new recordings of the same tracks. It's definitely a better choice to me (now if only they didn't butcher the combat...)

On ps1, there was nothing like it. I loved the setting and the way the characters got along. It’s only gotten better in the sequels but back then was really unique. The game was too hard though. It had long battles and the last dungeon, which I never finished, had a lot of blind walking and excessive enemy rate. I couldn’t finish it even when cheating with action replay and quick level up. It’s still special to me in my heart though and that art was no joke. I use to have the guide just for the art.

Ok, big boomer time, Revelations Persona WAS MY FIRST, and only actually, I only played 2 when it came to the psp, then went and play the other one which was fucky cause EP carries the name change from Revelations, which IS's remaster doesn't so my brain took a while to process it all thank you Atlus for not translating EP's remaster, idiots. Watching this video made me want to check out the Ice Queen quest, even tho' it really sounds like a pain, and also, Shin Megami Tensei If, which got a translation and it's said to be kind of the proto Persona.

I got nothing but respect for Persona boomers :) y'all were holding it down way back. I think by the time Atlus could have translated EP, the PSP in the West was already dying/dead. and considering the sales of IS for PSP, I guess it didn't make sense business-wise? there's some stuff online here and there for why the game never made it over. it was unfortunate timing, all in all...I hope one day the ENTIRE duology can make it to the West properly, whether they're ports or remakes.

There is actually an answer guide on the internet, that gives you the right choices for each demon. And if you make a demon angry with one of the right choices, you can always switch the answering charakter (I learned that darn piece of information near the end, so screw me 😂). Good review. One missed point that I wished you brought up however was how important Mai's questions were in the gingerbread house within the forest. There's a reason why those questions determine whether you get the good ending or the bad ending: you get the good ending if you tell her to stop running away and to accept reality and to love herself the way she is, but you get the bad ending if you don't know what to tell her or if you tell her to keep hiding within her delusional fantasy. THIS is THE point of Persona: having the strength to face the truth and accept it.

I played through Persona 1 for the first time a few weeks ago. What an AMAZING game. I loved every second of it. I did play on an emulator, and I did fast forward through some random encounters (though I did play the majority in normal time, except when doing endgame grinding to get everyone leveled for their ultimates), so I'm sure everyone's complaints about the slow combat and frequent encounters are valid, but this is still one of the few 10/10 games I've played. I finished Innocent Sin right after it, and despite that being a great game, I just wanted to replay P1 again throughout it. The first person perspective is so much better for dungeon crawling, and the pacing was so much better in P1. There was also a lot less aimless wandering and cryptic stuff in P1.

My one hang-up with the PSP version is that the new soundtrack by only Shoji Meguro feels a bit less fitting and "more anime" than the PS1 OST, which was a huge collaboration between multiple composers from Atlus. As a result they composed songs they each were comfortable with, and the soundfonts used all across the game vary in such great way to give a weird or comfortable vibe to the areas and scenes. Deva Yuga is the PRIME example I mention every time, the original is so fucking surreal and cerebreal with the weird speaking voices across the left and right speakers of your headphones. The PSP version is just an acoustic guitar over what feels like a hip hop beat, still a fine song but wildly different from the originally intended vibe.
