I only JUST discovered this game series today while reading random entries on TCRF.net, and I'm blown away. I can't believe this game isn't recognized more for it's influence on the early action RPG genre like Zelda 1 & 2 on the NES, and the arcade sequel feels like it set the groundwork for Secret of Mana on SNES. Even a game like Pocky & Rocky feels like it can trace inspiration to this game.
@ImportGamingFTW4 жыл бұрын
It is odd that the Valkyrie series isn't brought up more in general gaming and gaming history discussions. With Pocky & Rocky, I'd say that the opposite is most likely true with Valkyrie, actually, since the first game in the Kiki Kaikai series (Pocky without Rocky) came out in the mid-80s, a few years before The Legend of Valkyrie!

I got introduced to the series from collecting all the Namco Museum PS1 titles in the late 90s. Definitely the *wait for it* HIDDEN GEM on the volume 5 pack! I played it a lot then and revisited it over the summer this year. If the game had distribution in American arcades I'd like to think it would've done pretty well. There's an original System 2 PCB for just a little under $2000 on eBay right now - you should treat yourself for the holidays!
@ImportGamingFTW4 жыл бұрын
I would agree that it is definitely the gem of Vol. 5, which is already packed with classics as is. I really wish I had picked up the game in the late 90s when I had the chance. I seriously planned on getting Vol. 5 for Valkyrie, but was dissuaded by reviews of the game in magazines at the time, which weren't good. So dumb of me to base my decisions so much on magazines. If I had $2000 to blow, I would definitely pick up a board! I've seen a few go for under $1000 over the years, but...well, until I win the lottery or weasel my way into marrying one of the Japanese royals, I will just have to remain satisfied with these ports, ha ha.

I was very late to the party with this. Obviously never saw the game in arcades here in the UK growing up. How I eventually came to discover it was that I picked up a Playstation Classic a while back, with the idea of running custom firmware on it and using it as an 'arcade' machine (basically any PS1 ports of classic arcade games and shooters I could think of), so naturally I acquired the Namco Museum collections. I'd only ever played the first 3 before, so soon checked the others out to see what other games they had (initially I was mostly looking forward to playing games I'd played in the arcade before, like Baraduke) so ended up finally playing Legend Of Valkyrie that way. I immediately fell in love with it due to it's awesome soundtrack and really fun gameplay, and since then I've also gotten a PC-Engine Mini and played the heck out of the Japanese PC-Engine port on it. I've also been recommending it to pretty much everybody after a fun, arcade style RPG as well, as I don't know anybody else who's familiar with it either. A real shame, as I think Namco could have possibly had a smash hit franchise with Valkyrie had they marketed it to the West, and I'll be straight there if they ever do a remake or sequel. Thanks for the videos, they've really helped to fill me in on the history behind it.

Well, the Valkyrie will be in my collection, bought Namco Museum 5 Japan version days ago off Ebay for under $30. According to a Japanese Wikipedia article, if played on a PS2, and have double disc read speed enabled, the music runs too fast.

And that has been tested a few times all the way to the end, the game runs absolutely fine.

I never played any of the Valkyrie games but after watching some of the gameplay, it makes me think of the Kiki Kaikai AKA Pocky and Rocky games due to it's similar top down perspective. Now im wondering if that game was influenced by the Valkyrie series.

Oh man what a beautiful video! I love videos that cover games in such a careful manner. Gotta say though Zelda is not an RPG. 🤪
@ImportGamingFTW Жыл бұрын
Hey, much appreciated! I was actually working on the last part of this series earlier in the year until dropping it in favor of finally finishing the video I uploaded earlier this week. I don't consider the Zelda games RPGs, really, but from the mid-80s until even Ocarina of Time, it was often considered so, especially in the Famicom days.
@doublestarships646 Жыл бұрын
@@ImportGamingFTW I'm a life long TTRPG and CRPG fan so I consider RPGs to have elements of either having character sheets or character stat screens (detailed character stats that determine the outcomes to situations and abilities that expand those options), semblance of roleplaying, and simply share the traits of D&D and the genre as a whole. I would say the latest two Zelda games with the whole weapons breaking and food abilities have turned it into an action/adventure game with light RPG mechanics. Every game would have to become an RPG because of power ups that change the stats of a character lol. Even chess would be considered an RPG just because you can change a piece into a queen when you reach a piece to the other side. Every game borrows an aspect of D&D but that's because that's the nature of games as a whole. Progression needs the feeling of progressing in something.

@ImportGamingFTW4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, I would love to talk about Chrono memorabilia, and actually wanted to do a video like that when the 25th anniversary was happening! I decided not to do it at that time, though, because a few of my games and items are in the States. I was planning on bringing them back with me in the summer, but, well, that didn't happen for obvious reasons. I think next year I'll do some casual collection type videos for game series that I love like Chrono Trigger/Cross, Suikoden, FF, Valkyrie, Goemon, Ogre...man, the list just goes on. No need to do a history of Chrono games, since there are probably a ton of great ones already!

It's too bad they didn't use an 8 Meg Hu-Card for this title as I assume that's why they cut out the 2 Player mode as well as truncating some of the levels. Probably did that to save space to make it all fit on a 4 Meg cart. Makes me wonder what we could have gotten on an 8 Meg cart. Other playable characters, bigger levels, more animations, 2 player mode, etc.

Hey Jimmy, I do not know how much you are into Nihon Falcom. This is their 40th anniversary this year. I was also thinking of a KZbin channel who might cover this quest and you were the first one who came to my mind. The Legend of Heroes series; there are three sub series of 15 games (16th coming out this year). The first duology of games were attached to the Dragon Slayer series before we went into the Gagharv trilogy. The first entry was translated here in the west, but DS: Legend of Heroes II was not. For some reason, I cannot find much information on this entry. I know a few details about it, but little else. Would you consider doing a video on that game explaining the plot details and what you think of it the way you have done your "THE LAST SUIKODEN" video? Thank you for your time. Love you content!

I'd love to know why they cancelled the sequel. I have always wanted them to make a more modern version of the first Valkyrie game on the Famicom!
