2:32 as a German, I jumped at this part. Though the original song itself is not in any way connected to the Nazis, this verse is actually not sung as the national anthem because it's heavily linked to the nazi regime. They misused it and put the lyrics out of context to support their agenda (at least that’s what i learned in history class) We only sing the 3rd verse that starts with "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit"
@ginnungagap48042 ай бұрын
It's actually not forbidden to sing it. Only during a short period of time after the WW2 it wasn't allowed in the American occupation zone. In 1990 even the Bundesverfassungsgericht (the highest German court) explicitly decided it's allowed to interpret it due to the freedom of art.
@__Sunny___10102 ай бұрын
@@ginnungagap4804 ok i just googled that and you’re right, sorry. I guess i just thought it was forbidden because it does have a close connection to the Nazis. It is not seen as very appropriate to sing it though.
@peterfireflylund2 ай бұрын
@@__Sunny___1010it doesn’t actually have a “close connection to the Nazis”. It’s just what you and most other Germans have been (falsely) told.
@__Sunny___10102 ай бұрын
@@peterfireflylund they did use the lyrics to justify their belief that germany was more important than other countries and played it a lot at important events. During that era, this song was a symbol, reinterpreted to serve the purposes of the dictatorship. The first verse was sung together with the Horst-Wessel-song which is a Nazi fighting song. So i would say it is kind of connected to this dark era

Just FYI, the verse of the German national anthem that is being inserted in the video (while the transparent flag waves in the background) is not to be sung or used. The lines of that verse call for Germany to be placed "above all," which historically referred to national unity, but it became tied to aggressive nationalism under the Nazis. After WWII, we chose to only sing the third verse of our anthem, focusing on unity, justice, and freedom. 🤝⚖️🆓🕊️🇩🇪 Of course, editor San couldn't have known what is being sung in this language foreign to them when they inserted the clip, so no offense taken! 🤗

Yep. Thanks for commenting! Only 3rd stanza of German anthem is used due to the misuse of „Deutschland Deutschland above all“ by the Nazis…

The "above all" is not the only problem; the geographic references in the first verse all lie outside today's Germany, so it could be read as a wish to expand.

Fun fact: The German anthem (the 2nd movement of Haydn's "Emperor" quartet) was originally written as an anthem to Emperor Francis II, so the title was "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" ("god save Francis the emperor"). The 1st movement of that quartet is a *musical cryptogram* as it begins with the melody "G-E-F-D-C", the initials of the title. ("C" for "Caesar", the Latin form of "Kaiser")

2:32 you have to be careful not to play that verse of the german national anthem xD It means "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" which translates to Germany above all and is banned due to its interpretation of the nazi regime. Later on it also says ,,von der Maas bis an die Memel" which implies borders of like 2 centuries ago. We usually only sing the third verse because the first two have been misinterpreted during history or have outdated views on females.

But I just realized -- the melody ends with E A D# C# B instead of E A E D# C#. Combined with being 2 octaves higher than the Lassan, I realized that the melody that was played was actually from the part after the long A G# A G# A G# trill :)
