I made this using my Vestax VCI-400. I made this recording by layering each recording (digital).
So I first laid a beat down for 5 minutes, mixing from one beat to another. How many samples do you recognize? Leave a comment below.
There are likely around 8 or more different beat tracks since I was mixing them fast. Then, I layered more beat tracks on, as well as movie samples, filtered parts of songs, etc.
I scratched a lot in this and I also used the pads on the VCI-400 like you would on a sampler like an MPC.
The mixes are fast, sometimes sloppy, but I wanted action-packed, and I also like the feeling that using decks to throw in parts of a song can give it a real sense of swing that can be truly unquantized. I was listening to Hank Shoklee describe how the created Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, and he said they sometimes sampled directly from vinyl instead of into a sampler/drum machine because it gave a different feeling. He also said a lot of other amazing methods, but that one stuck with me.
It inspired me to make this.
I made this on my Vestax VCI-400, which was their flagship controller before going under in 2013-ish. I love this controller, and I actually bought two of them so I have a spare. I've tried the Pioneer controllers like the nicer DDJs and they're excellent too, but the VCI-400 is such a small footprint for four decks.
I plan on making more of these mixes and releasing them so stay tuned.
