I was at a dairy farm 2 brothers ran. They named every damn cow 250 ish. They knew all the mother/grandmother names and calf names just by looking at them.

My Grandma use to have farm animals in a barn on her land, animals came and went but the one animal she seemly kept was a male goat, would always try to head butt ya but he wasn't to strong so you could just push him back, his name was Sam. To this day my Grandmother remains as the only person I knew in all of New York to try and keep farm animals as pets since she was never really a farmer as far as I knew.

Today I'm going to a memorial held in honor of my old friend who I have been close to for a very long time, he was a biker and a mountain man sort who loved animals. But because he was a farmer he had a habit of avoiding giving them names so he would not get attached... when he got cancer a couple of months ago we had to take his pet cat in with us because the doctor said he could not be exposed to animals while undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The barn cat was named "cat" as he had never bothered to try to think of a name for 2 years. He also had a loving pet goat named Goat-Goat, a dog named Dog, and a donkey named Donkey. While there were a few other animals he kept, and 1-2 of his former dogs did get names, absolutely none of the farm animals were. We lately have given the cat the name Furtig, after a protagonist in the 1950s scifi novel 'A New Breed'. It was my late friends favorite book and I think it suits him. I miss you buddy. You would have liked this clip. Hope you're back with your beloved dogs up in heaven.

My heart goes out to you. It is so hard losing those we love and I know there are really no words that can express the depth of the emotions and loss that you feel or that express an understanding of that when you've been through it yourself and want to reach out and let someone know you care about what they are going through. I am sure it helped ease his mind to know you took in his cat and it's such a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to your friend to name the cat Furtig after a character in his favorite book. If our loved ones are able to look down on us after they've moved on....and I'd like to think they are able to...then I know your friend is looking down on you and smiling and appreciating the friendship you shared just as much as you are. Thank you for sharing a piece of that friendship. I wish I had more profound words to express my heartfelt condolences for your loss of your friend.
