In Finland we choose to get to know our kids first and then give them a name (we don’t wait more than 3 months though!🤪). And then we have a partyyyyy🥳
How is it where you live? Let me know in the comments!⬇️

Figuring out the baby's personality isn't the only thing slowing down the naming of a baby in Finland. Besides that, the government also has to approve the name before it can be given.

My grandmother was born in the United States to Finnish immigrants. She was called Taimi by all her family. Years later when she needed a passport to visit Finland, she had to get her birth certificate from public records. The name on the certificate was “Fanny” ?!? They had to get it legally changed. Apparently, the hospital staff named her as because her parents didn’t leave a name.

Wow I wish my family was Finnish. It took me about 3 weeks to pick my kid's name, and everyone was giving me so much pressure about it 😭. I was like 'just call him the baby I'm still thinking! They told me I was having a girl, I don't even have a list of names to choose from 😭'

The government DL for a name is 3 months. We have name laws so it cannot be grammatically incorrect, offensive etc. Less r/tragedeigh here. The reason we don't name our babies beforehand is an old tradition. It was thought that the baby was susceptible for illnesses or other bad things before they were baptised. Giving a name would help the devil tp find the unprotected baby more easily. So it's considered bad luck to announce the name before the baptism or name-giving party.

I got my name even before I was born (my parents also had a second option in case I was a boy - my little brother got that name a few years later). I also wasn't baptised as a baby nor had any "naming party". But I don't think I'm a rare case here in Finland...

You guys should stop this social media charade. I am currently in Finland and yet to see any happy Finn. Edited* Most Finnish people are nice by the way. Look beyond the facials and you would see the good heart, if only you could make that first approach. Kittos

I concur! Either they don't give a $#!+ or they're so prideful they won't ever admit they're sad or maybe it's cause everyone was drunk during the survey 😂 My mother is Finnish, I have dual citizenship, visit family there and friends, and many are alcoholics and sad and depressed 🤷🏼‍♀ But also the government takes care of a lot of their citizens better than other countries including the US (IMO) They may have less stress because of this. Also EU has different regulations on foods and pesticides etc, food there is better, healthier. There's no monsanto in Finland. They don't give a $#!+ enough to do something like that 😂 All that can add up to a happier population. But one thing that stuck out to me was how many people avoid eye contact, unless they're drunk of course. Here in the US we make eye contact and nod at strangers and say "how are you" and keep it moving. They call us Jenkkille. Aka Yankees 😂

@@blondiex3308 Small talk like asking "how are you" when you actually don't care is considered by Fins to be shallow and pretentious and you only ask that from your friends.

Seeing happiness is different from actual happiness. Someone can look very happy and fulfilled but it might just be a facade to cover up sadness. The same can be the other way around someone might not smile a lot and always seem angry byt they might still be very contempt and happy with their lives

@@nathandts3401 It's just something Christians do. I'm sure that a Christian hasn't done anything to you and even if they did that's no reason to hate on all of them. I am a Christian and it's not like a cult sacrifice or something. If you don't understand something, don't judge it. Also, we do not drown the baby or hold he/she in the water for long periods of time, it's just quick dip in and out.
