A couple years ago I talked to my Dad about his 1958 Harley Davidson Duo Glide Pan Head. I asked him some questions about the bike as this motorcycle has been part of his life as much as it has in mine. I got to go on the back of this bike many, many times.
And now finally I was able to actually ride the bike. (Video coming soon)

I really enjoyed this video. Not just for the bike, but also for the obvious love between you and your dad. My own dad has passed on, but he’s the one who gave me my love for motorcycles. I remember sitting between him and the gas tank of his Triumph, riding off down the road. I was probably about four years old. I’ve been riding since I was fourteen...am now 66, and just bought another Harley. Thanks for sharing the memories.

Great Video, I also have my dads "58". Started it uo today after storing it for three years. Just like yours all the oil pissed out. I am glad you talking about it. I didn't know it was common. Years ago in 2004 when I first got it I took it downtown Royal Oak Wednesday in Harley night.. It was a very hot day. I came out to start it and there was a crowd gathered. I kicked and kicked that bike till the sweat poured off of me. Once I got it going I swore that I would get an electric starter installed and I did. What an improvement over the kickstart. Thank You for the video.

Harley Davidson first introduced optional electric starters and 12 volt system on their bikes on the 1964 3 wheeled servi-car which was the most expensive Harley built at that time and the following year on the 1965 Electra Glide with the Panhead engine and a 12 volt electric start. 1979 was also the last year you could buy a kickstart only XLCH, though it was not all that different from the rest of the lineup by this time, and only 141 of them were made.

sir i think i can help you with the oil draining into lower end of your motorcycle. i too had the same problem with mine and a friend told me how to fix it. remove your oil pump and locate the check ball that allows oil to come into the lower end from the oil tank.you will have to get another check ball because the repair will destroy the original check ball. take your check ball and fasten it to a narrow steel rod with some high strength epoxy. apply some valve lapping compound to the ball and insert it into its corresponding oil passage . you will lap the seat where the ball seats. reassemble the pump with the new ball and viola. the oil stays in the tank where it belongs. good luck to you sir and also you have a very fine motorcycle

What a fantastic video! This is my favourite so far. The good news is, I think this is a fantastic video, and I liked your Dad 15 seconds into the video. The bad news is....I doubt you will ever know as much as your Dad does about motorcycles or motorcycling. That's no bad thing, I never knew as much as my Dad did about anything..... I hope you offered to kick start the bike for him? If you've never kicked a bike before, or not for a long time, your leg will ache in the morning with that much kicking.....spend as much time as you can with your parents, one day they will not be around to enjoy.

@@NamelessRiderz Ya old boy said it all :~ the lifters are what the yanks call valve followers they are in direct contact with the camshaft and impart thier mechanical force to the pushrods to activate the rockers to open the valves which are returned by springs. Here's where the instatube experts come in to correct me. . . . I think in around '56 Hardly Dangerous introduced hydraulic valve followers in the Panhead models whereby the valve lash was controlled by the thinning of oil within the lifter assembly to allow for the expansion of the valves due to heat (as I'm sure you can appreciate everything expands when hot, and so does oil viscosity, or thickness become thinner) and as a result the valve lash, or free space becomes larger to allow the valves to expand without unseating and not transferring thier heat into the valve seats and head to transfer thier heat via conduction. Phew! As a result most performance engines run solid lifters with a preset clearance so as to reduce cavitation and valve float under high revs etc. As always love Ya stuff chief HERE ENDETH THE LESSON apologies for any errors as I am full of wild turkey 101
