Nanao lack of Zan was a mystery until it was relevant. All story telling is things are not relevant until relevant and by looking at the shallow surface of plot devices. Firstly she wields a sacred treasure that Soul Society didn’t know how it worked, she didn’t know it would even defeat Lille and says by him seeing it means it will. Sacred Treasures are long standing mysteries and what was sacred to Soul Society ? Soul King! So this means sacred treasures are likely soul king tools and he has one that is countering a sacred being of higher power like Lille. This then promotes deeper mythology about primordial times and what Soul King had to do to tame the cosmos and make three worlds and implies this tool was made to defeat gods or godly beings. This isn’t a plot device it’s part of his greater mythology and relevant
