I think that's the scene that made me recognize Kyôraku and Ukitake (If not for his fragile health) as the strongest of the captains after Yamamoto and Aizen (They are also the oldest with Unohana I think, the three of them being Yama's precious pupils ? The old man definitely made them monsters xD), simply because Yama gii chose to go after them specifically recognizing them as the highest threat to be dealt with immediately. Also the fact that they were able (The two of them) to fight on an equal footing against Yamamoto's Ryujin Jakka with just their Shikai, true beasts ! A clash of Kyoraku and Yama gii's bankai would've already been an incredible scene to witness but a clash between Yama gii's bankai and Kyoraku's combined to Ukitake's (Who potentially has a just as strong bankai if not more ?), epic ! Would they have been able to defeat Yama ? I say maybe, Incredible ! I also love that Kyoraku and Ukitake read the situation well and decided to save Rukia, they smelled something fishy with the whole situation and didn't hesitate to act which was cool and showed how smart, brave and wise they were, smartness, observation and wisdom even Yamagii lacked in that arc, I thought it was super cool. PS: I say Kyoraku can probably release his Bankai even with Ukitake there because when they were fighting Starrk, Ukitake was worrying about the others not about himself when he asked Shunsui not to use his Bankai which leads me to think his bankai has probably somewhere close to the same effect of his shikai but on a large scale negating Kyoraku's Bankai's effect on him and maybe even redirecting it to a target of his choice. Kubo made the best choice making Kyoraku Shunsui Commander general and Captain of the first division, Yamato, Ukitake and Unohana would've been proud !

Do you guys forget that Yamamoto taught Kenpachi some kendo? Aside from his incredibly destructive shikai (which is the strongest in all of Soul Society). He went to a lot of trouble to recruit Espada to tire and weaken the captains, and if not for the hogyokou he'd most likely have lost to yoruichi, urahara, isshin, or Yamamoto. His raw power is probably the lowest of the "beyond captain" captains, he's just smart.

@@waldoman7 it is indeed an illusion and it has no limits. The only way to break out of his kyouka suigetsu is to either have more reatsu than him, or hold his zanpakutou so you become immune to the illusion just like what gin did to kill aizen.

Shunsui would be quite a ways away from being as strong as Aizen. Don't forget, Aizen stopped Shunsui's Shikai with a kido spell without incantation. Shunsui is also outmatched in speed, strength and just flat out reiatsu when fighting with Aizen. The only real threat to Aizen was Yamamoto (And of-course Ichigo with his ass-pulled "I CAN FUCK EVERYTHING IN THAT DIRECTION CUZ I'M MAIN CHARACTER" Attack.)

Kenpachi doesn´t have a chance against the old man, Yama-jii could take him and Byakuya at the same time whitout releasing his bankai, cause you have forgotten that Yamamoto has a bankai too, so even if Zaraki had a bankai and had his eyepatch off, and even fighting with Byakuya whit his bankai against Yamamoto, Yamamoto would probably bite both of them to death, think that Yama-jii took down Wonderweiss who won Kensei with his bankai, and the old man did that barehanded.

At the time, yes. Now, 11 years down the line and with the story progressed (with Kenpachi's long sparring session with Unohana resulting in him achieving Bankai) I am inclined to believe that the only reason why Yamamoto was not surpassed AGES ago by Kenpachi was simply because he was "defeated" as a child. Imagine if he got to actually build his experience at full strength throughout that 1000 years. Basically he lost all that time thanks to Unohana (by her own admission) being weaker than him. So she bought him extra time on the throne and Yamamoto became complacent. As is why he was not even considered a potential target even if he was one of the strongest. He was also, unfortunately, one of the dumbest - aside from his battle experience he had very little and the reason why things went well every time was not because of Yamamoto, but because Captains disobeyed him.

Of course, everyone was already worn down, and we don't really know whether or not Aizen needed the Hogyoku. We don't know when Aizen switched, presumably after Shinsui stabbed him. So, while Shinsui absolutely cannot beat Aizen, it is possible that several captains together could if he hadn't had the hogyoku. Of course, it's all speculation...
