Nancey Murphy, PhD, looks briefly at theological views of human nature and at critical points in history when science influenced these views. The major emphasis will be to illustrate the many ways neuroscience is calling body-soul or body-mind dualism into question, and promoting a physicalist account-that is, describing humans as purely physical organisms. However, the claim that we are composed of matter must not be taken to imply that higher human faculties are simply determined by material laws.

48:32 No, we will not "go home thinking what we think regardless of what [you] say". For example, I am now thinking that what you said is fallacious. Mental processes reduced to physical/chemical reactions include reactions with environmental stimuli, such as the sounds coming out of the mouth of the woman on the stage (and in my case, reproduced through my headphones). My genetic constitution and my accumulated environmental influences up until then could determine that I end up not thinking differently regardless, but they could determine that I do, at a later date if not right then. One certainly has far less chance of thinking differently should one not have listened to her talk. Rational persuasion, in both expression and reception, is simply part of the chain of physical/chemical reactions, and it baffles me that anti-naturalists so often try to paint as something beyond a mechanistic reality.
