Nancy Guthrie on Ministering to People in Their Suffering

Nancy Guthrie, author of “Holding on to Hope: A Pathway Through Suffering to the Heart of God”, explains that while the Christian default to pray for those experiencing suffering is correct, their language in those prayers is often deficient. Instead of praying only for the suffering to go away, we should pray for God to give faith and peace in the midst of suffering and to use that suffering to bring the sufferer newfound maturity in Christ.

I am so grateful to Crossway for introducing me to Nancy Guthrie. I received an email about 6 day devotional about her book Scoundrels in Scripture and decided I had 6 days (Novel Corona pandemic quarantine) and I was so deeply impacted by her teaching I decided to hunt for more teachings by Ms. Guthrie on KZbin. What a blessing!

Thank you so much for this. I used to pray for my friend's daughter to live who was in intensive care. After 6 months of battle, she passed away in hospital. I later learned that her death allowed my friend to get closer to God. I'm praying for her as God bless her with a son after 2 yrs of her daughter's passing. In our struggle, God's strength and purpose can be revealed. May lord have mercy on us and thankful always for life, life at its fullest and abundance. In Jesus name Amen 🙏✝️

Nancy that is so true about prayer, like I for one can not remember from one minute to the next what I just read. It's like that with everything including, like remembering the words to songs or to a book or to God's word. I want to remember Gods word when I read the bible but retain so little I don't know why!

I see this a lot about praying and asking God to help but have you ever actually SEEN it happen? Have you seen the help happen? Has there ever been an answer to those prayers? When there isn't there is always the pat answer that God just didn't answer in the way that we wanted, as if it's OUR fault for wanting, NEEDING His help in a certain way. Why pray if God is just going to do it His way anyway? Always the pat, repeated, empty answer. I am a Christian but when my husband collapsed and died suddenly it all became confusing and cloudy and scary.
