Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC - 1993 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Technical Program - This was the first season where the ISU held a Qualifying Round at Worlds. Although it did not count toward the overall placements at the time, only the Top 12 from each of the 2 Qualifying Groups would advance to the Technical Program portion of the competition. Nancy Kerrigan of the United States skated a clean program to edge out Oksana Baiul of Ukraine for 1st Place after this portion of the competition.

Yes, I agree. All her programs look the same! They are predictable and seem to have the same formula every time. I do have to say, her costumes are beautiful, she's pretty to look at but she is NOT an artist. But I love her technical ability as far as stroking, body position and edges.

I love Nancy's grace and elegance. She's beautiful to watch and was one of the best dressed always, very regal and classy looking. However Nancys programs tended to be quite uniformed and very predictable, as she was extremely limited to diversify her movements. This was great for her though:)

The sad thing is, people expected her to be a model on ice and in most ways she really was. She was athletically limited in comparison to the other skaters of that time. Nancy's programs were consistently recycled with the same exact choreography. She was beautiful to watch with gorgeous costumes, but her team never challenged her ability to do bigger things

If they ever came out with a skating Barbie, Nancy would fit right in. Plastic and stiff but beautiful with nice outfits. The best I ever saw her skate was the 94 Olympics, where she got the silver!

Nancy had that same exact expression in each of her opening poses through the years. She really was artistically limited. A 'pretty' skater but that was about it. She also had a weak layback spin and her spirals weren't so great either - except for the one where she held her leg up by the hand.

To be fair, the "one where she held her leg up by the hand" - the Kerrigan spiral - is very, very difficult to do. Don't assume that just because it looks pretty it is easy - it's not.

I’ve always found Nancy’s skating a bit wooden. Someone once described Katarina Witt as workmanlike and I think of that was the case then this is positively robotic. You can’t even say the lack of expression is because of the modern music because Debi Thomas’ modern short programme music in 87 & 88 was much better choreographed and I think she did her own choreography! Just doesn’t do it for me 😫

@Sam Oksana Baiul placed 2nd in her qualifying group, just like Kerrigan. Interesting that Bonaly with her weak edgework and awkward muscled jumps ever managed to place as high as she did.Lu Chen placed 1st in her qualifying group.

Jacob Nolan I’ve always thought that Nancy didn’t really feel her music. Some of it was composed for her by a choreographer, but that doesn’t mean anything. I don’t know if she had much say in her music choices, but I believe Tonya did. Even when Tonya skated poorly, you could sense a connection with her music that made you think she liked it. I think Nancy showed more joy as a professional skater when she probably had more say in what music she skated to, but that’s just my own theory.

Lauren Brown Music was written for her by Mark Militano former US Pairs Champion with his sister, Melissa. Mark is brother in law of Mary Scotvold, Nancy's choreographer. He also wrote her short program music for 1994.

I think that might be due to the coaches/choreographers. People have a signature just like listening to music. You can often identify the composer because they leave their mark.

@@auntiechercher4266 This was a short program, and it looked the same, because it was the same. She, along with many other skaters, chose to use the same short program (technical program) at many competitions. Her 94 short program was a little different, but still very similar. On the other hand, her long programs from 92, 93, and 94 were all very different from one another, even though two of them had been used, at least in part, from previous years. How about giving her a little credit for the great height and wonderful execution of the triple Lutz, double toe combination? How about a little credit for the absolutely perfect and effortless looking double axle? How about a little credit for the beautiful double lutz from a very difficult shoot the duck position? How about a little credit for the most beautiful spiral I ever saw anyone do, including Sasha Cohen, even though Sasha's was a free leg position. I think her choreography interpreted the music very well.

@@genednomyar3383 Her jumps were decent, not amazing but decent. Her spiral was quite unique at the time but others have done much better ones since. Nicole Bobek and Michelle Kwan had gorgeous ones. Sasha's was just ugly, showing off flexibility (and her crotch) but that's about it. Kerrigan was lucky to as favoured and decorated as she was because actually she was fairly average as a skater with stiff, wooden movements and cringey "jazzercise" choreography. She also had a tendency to completely bomb her long programs. Many were actually shocked by her poor LP here and I have no idea why because she'd had some pretty bad meltdowns even before then yet still finished high enough to medal

She was very overrated. My goodness. You can tell this female commentator loved her too. I don’t know. Nancy just wasn’t a first place skater the way Kristi or Tonya(at one point) were. She never did anything incredible. Just nice programs. She was always second or third, or lower. And Oksana was here so of course Nancy placed lower.

Christopher Hutson, I was born a part Polish-Yankee, and then you go on to blame the Yankee upbringing for her attitude.. Good grief. Don't forget that Nancy's part Irish. Being a Yankee has nothing to do with her upbringing. It is more with her personality, Her attitude is that sometimes she's eccentric, but usually most people who are eccentric are Southerners. Yankees have a refined, noble upbringing.

Nancy Kerrigan was sort of like Sasha Cohen a decade later...can always skate good clean short programs but rarely if ever could do a clean long program. And, for the both of them, their programs/skating always looked the same! Hehe
