@Meauxtea or anyone else who's wondering how to make specific sized cones, Nancy did an excellent job demonstrating but I'll try to explain. Pi = 3.14 and to find the circumference of a circle you must multiply Diameter x pi. If you know the diameter and the height of your desired cone, draw a triangle to represent it the way she showed using your measurements. In the example she gave, her cone diameter was 29mm; therefore, 29mm x 3.14 = 91mm and that's the length of wire she cut to verify calculations were correct. For example, if your diameter is 6mm you'd multiply 6mm x 3.14 to get the circumference of your cone. She didn't show this part but to give perspective, if she'd wrapped her wire into a circle, the wire circle would be the same size as the circle on her finished cone. If you draw your triangle using your desired height and diameter measurements and follow her example exactly the way she marked her triangle with the compass and ruler, you should produce a cone with your desired dimensions. ♦️♦️NOTE - BEFORE CUTTING YOUR METAL, MAKE YOUR CONE WITH PAPER or thin cardboard to be sure it's the size you need. Best wishes! 🙂

I think I missed a critical bit… where do you work your height into the formula? For example, if you wanted a tall, narrow cone, or a short, wide cone?

This is also useful for making a collet for stone setting. Not everyone( me included!) Can afford a collet block. That plumbob is a great idea! Thanks

You are an angel Nancy! I am learning metalsmithing skills via books and the internet as part of a career change due to some health problems. Every time I need to know something, I find one of your videos (I should know just to go to your channel or website, but Google does a good job of directing me). I have spend countless hours on your website and am constantly amazed at the content you generously share. Not a year ago, I stumbled upon your channel and watched a few videos and was introduced to the wonderful flexshaft. Prior to this learning adventure I had only used a hammer and screwdriver. I just upgraded to my second flex shaft, a Grobet with a foot pedal and a quick change hand piece. My first was a bench grinder flex shaft combo from Harbor Freight that allowed me to try it out and learn that I love using one and wanted a nicer one. Anyway, I wanted to give you a big thanks for being my teacher and internet friend who I have never met. Working from home and not being in the best health has made me pretty isolated and it's so great to see a familiar face. I love your sense of humor and always learn so much and usually have a great time because you make it learning so fun and interesting. I just wanted to let you know how much this means to me and how much I appreciate your generosity and beautiful spirit.

I'm currently in a jewelry and metalsmithing class and I'm working on a piece that is going to have a small unicorn horn on it. This is a big help to get me started on making the cone out of metal. I'm a very visual person, so seeing this vs. reading it from the book is MUCH better. Thanks a bunch! :D

Glad you found me too! Welcome. They don't have a spray repellent for the metalsmithing bug - yet! I'm kinda hoping they never figure that one out. Hah. Thanks so much for the lovely compliments - they are truly appreciated. Thanks for writing and watching. Nancy

Thank you Nancy, I was going crazy trying how to dimension a cone for my necklaces, when I go from bead strand to rat-tail strand. So, now, I presume the sides of that particular triangle are 29 mm too, right? So, It's an equilateral triangle. For people who do not know how to generate the point "C," - Open your compass to 29 mm and then put your compass needle on "B" and swing a 29 mm circle. Then put your compass needle point on "A" and swing another 29 mm circle. The place where those two circles intersect above line AB, is the place where you draw the dot "C.". Then just draw the triangle by connecting dots A B and C. Yes? Then the rest, like you say. Sorry to add my two cents, but some people may not understand how you get the point "C." AND THANK YOU cause, I had no idea how to size a cone !!!

LOL! I stumbled onto this video via other jewelry making videos on using cone findings to finish off multi-strand necklaces--and I've been increasingly bitten by the metalsmithing bug while drooling over all the "vintage/steampunk" stuff that's popular..so if I need to make my own cone findings, it seems I've come to a very good place. :-D Loved the video, loved the humor and personal touch you've given to this lesson...:-D

Great tutorial, I want to make my own bead cones for ending Kumihimo ropes, this will work perfectly. How did you come up with 29mm? If I want a 12mm opening, for my cone, do I calculate 12 x Pi? Your tutorials are always sooo good, your laughter makes you 'real'. 💐💐💐

Regarding the cone: Have you ever made a bead cone for something like the end of a viking knit bracelet? I know I can buy them. I want to know if I can make them. I may not like it but that craving for knowledge is itching... I may just have to try it, but if you've done it, it would be nice to see on KZbin!

Hi Nancy, thanks for this! I was wondering if you (or anyone reading this) had any tips for wanting fabricate a cone from sheet with a specific diameter. I'm working on some bolo ties with a 5mm cord and I'm not quite sure how best to go about making the tips, though this video is by far the most helpful thing I've found.

Hi. I realize your comment is a year old now and you've probably figured it out by now but I thought I might still be of help to someone. Pi = 3.14 and to find the circumference of a circle you must multiply Diameter x pi. If you know the diameter and the height of your desired cone, draw a triangle to represent it the way she showed. She didn't show this part but to give you perspective, if she'd wrapped her wire into a circle, the wire circle would be the same size as the circle on her finished cone. Good luck! 🙂

Hi, I got a tool to make cones (out of silver) but don't know how to use it. The tool (I don't know its name, perhaps it's called a conifier?) is made out of a solid steel cylinder with the shape of a pencil, whose point is supposed to be used to give a piece of silver the shape of a cone by punching it with it. I have tried to make a cone using it, but the piece of silver gets pierced by the conifier tip. Could you please give me any advises? Thanks!
