Hi Megan, stretching the wire won't weaken it - it will work harden it some. You should probably anneal it before stretching and that way it should remain easy to use after stretching. If the wire gets too hard to work with, it can be annealed again. I'd use care in stretching very small gauges like 26 -30 gauge. Just pull gently and it shouldn't break. Good Luck.
