I think both Nanette and Benny's lovers sort of had a falling out and wanted to move on, so possibly between the events of G&J and Sherlock Gnomes both of them were friends at the time and possibly talked about how their loved ones broke up with them and after some time they both had crush on each other and both of them were actually similar both had been broken by their former lovers, both were best friends with the main characters and both of them had a crush on each other.
