In the documentary the last mountain it is thought that daniele fell and got tangled and tom tried to help him but both became maybe too exhausted or hyperthermic. Its also possible that they got hit by a lot of snow fall which may have caused the situation. The last mountain is an amazing documentary, albeit very sad.
