Nanning (南宁), the capital and largest city by population of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (广西壮族自治区) in Southern China, is renowned as the "Green City" (绿城) due to its abundant lush subtropical foliage. Situated in the south of Guangxi, Nanning is encircled by a hilly basin and enjoys a warm, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. Since 1949, Nanning has experienced sustained industrial growth, transitioning from its historical role to become a significant commercial and administrative center. Today, it stands as the economic, financial, and cultural heart of Guangxi, playing a pivotal role in the training of the Zhuang minority in the region. Nanning is also a key gateway for China-ASEAN opening up and cooperation.
The city boasts several notable universities, including Guangxi University, Guangxi Medical University, Guangxi University for Nationalities, Guangxi University of Finance and Economics, and Guangxi Arts University. Nanning's history stretches back over 1700 years, with its establishment as Jinxing County in the first year of the Daxing period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 318). It was later renamed Yong prefecture (Yongzhou) during the Tang dynasty and eventually got its current name, Nanning, meaning "Pacified South," in the Yuan dynasty.
Nanning's economy has seen rapid development, with its GDP reaching 341 billion RMB in 2015. The city is home to several development zones and industrial parks, contributing significantly to its economic output. Nanning's transportation infrastructure is well-developed, featuring an extensive metro system, two major railway stations, and the Nanning Wuxu International Airport, facilitating both domestic and international travel.
The city's rich biodiversity is supported by its warm climate, housing a wide variety of animal species and over 3,000 plant species. Nanning's commitment to greenery is evident in its numerous parks and the designation of the almond tree as the city tree, emphasizing its dedication to urban landscaping and greening efforts.
Nanning's cultural landscape is vibrant, with a strong emphasis on education, science, technology, and health. The city's food scene reflects a blend of local cuisine, Cantonese food styles, and influences from Southeast Asia, with rice noodles being a particularly popular dish among locals.
Tourism in Nanning is thriving, thanks to its proximity to scenic locations like Guilin, its own array of attractions including the Guangxi Museum, People's Park, and Mount Qingxiu, and its role as a gateway to Vietnam and the broader ASEAN region.
