There are plenty of men who have a fling and then the women get pregnant and the men do not want to be participants other than provide child support $ by law. Thus, the child is abandon by both parents. As one young girl told me ' I am not a child of love" her parents had a one night stand. Her biological donors did not want anything to do with her; father ghosted her and the mother gave her to the grandparents because she wanted to keep her partying lifestyle; thus the beginning of her story line on this earth abandoned at conception by the father and abandoned at birth by the mother.

For those wondering what the sentence is, the sentences for all five counts added together (the judge set them to run consecutively) add up to a minimum of 13 years and a maximum of life in prison. Unfortunately that was the absolute maximum the judge could sentence him to, because there is no additional penalty for raping a disabled person like there is for raping a child or elderly person. Ashley's mother is pressuring the legislature to pass Ashley's Law to provide for enhanced penalties for disabled people as well. In Utah sentences are always given as a range and then it's up to the parole board to decide how long he should actually serve. This crime is so heinous that hopefully the parole board never lets him out.

Assaults against disabled people are barely reported. And hard to investigate. As a witness in a case, the defence used the victims impairments to make it seem she didn't have the ability to differentiate normal behaviour from assault. It was the most frustrating experience of my life.

This is why I allow no man alone with my daughter (she I'd autistic) except my dad and my brother and that is only because I was a child alone with them (my brother was an adult when I was a child). I was also a vulnerable child because of past traumas so if they were going to take advantage of a child, they would have done so with me. No other man, not my cousins, uncle, not my child's own father is allowed alone with her. My mom's boyfriend would leave her bed while she slept and come into my room. So a boyfriend can't even stay over if I'm going to sleep. I've already accepted that marriage is not in my future. She trusted that man and would never have believed that behavior of him if she had not seen the video. I don't know what I'd do if I finally trusted a man and he did that to my daughter. Maybe I still need healing, but as far as I'm concerned, my damage protects me and my daughter from people like that.

However, having said that, the SA combined with not being able to tell anyone would have accumulated stress over the years. And stress can kill you, so yea I would blame him for her death as well. But he is only being charged for SA.

There are plenty of cases where people do prioritize men over their children opening the door to bad things happening, but pretending that’s every case or pretending that HAS to be the reality in every case is just a facade to make ourselves feel safe and protected as if we can avoid every horrible thing every time as long as we don’t do this or that. There is no evidence she placed him above her in any way, simply having married a man who presented himself as “a superhero” an “an amazing dad and husband” to a 20 years ago is not meeting that definition. In fact as soon as she discovered it she immediately called the police and had him arrested, with no moment to spare. It’s also pretty invalidating the seriousness of actual cases of women putting men before their kids to just throw it around at everyone you can. Simply having a husband for decades or not being a single mom is not “putting a man over your child”, anymore than sending your kid off to school where they are even more likely to experience trauma than in the home is “prioritizing your free time over your child”. This child could easily have been placed into a facility a decade prior to this, something that would make the life of a woman who is trying to prioritize her hubby over her kid much easier-yet she didn’t do that. She still dedicated every moment to her child, and the moment she discovered that the second closest person to her was hurting her daughter she immediately turned him in. And as someone who was actually raised by a mother who DID prioritize men over her children and suffered CSA, I can assure that this is not what it looks like, and it’s invalidating to both the people who experience that as well as the reality of the situation at hand to throw that around in a bid to give yourself some false sense of security or project a bias you already have. There are times where it’s ok to recognize that this was just a fucking monster in hiding who preyed on his daughter and was a sociopath enough to behave normally to his wife of 2 decades. There are plenty of red flags for mothers placing men above their kids. And literally none existed here, none that have been disclose anyway.

There are moms who let strangers in and out of their homes,Minton their kids lives, dating random people regularly, bring men they have known for less than 6 months into their kids lives, etc, letting these strange men be alone and unsupervised with their kids even, and just being super reckless with their children’s safety. There is no sign of that here though. Once again, this was the man who raised this girl, and had been married for 2 decades. For all intents and purposes, this WAS her father. But unfortunately even when you DO everything the right way, the safe way you take precautions, etc, there still is never a guarantee of security for every single person. Plenty of women got married, had children with the man they’d known and been married to for years and trusted, and even with this being the bio dad, even with families with 2 parent households and no divorced households having better outcomes, the dad still ends up sexually abusing the kids, because some people are just hide fucking monsters. Should all women just syphon sperm from men to conceive a child and then completely cut them off and never allow their children to have contact? Is that the answer? Once again, women DO make shit choices, there IS an obvious line of what is and is not acceptable. But as someone who grew up with that myself, I can assure you that this, at least based on all of the information available to everyone currently, is absolutely not that.
