I'd say it's more that he's completely oblivious as to what the song actually means. Mr. Poe may be mind- bendingly incompetent and have no clue about things right in front of him, but I wouldn't call him intentionally apathetic.

I wouldn't say that... Often in the books he's shown to care about them ( at the end of the third book he hugged them as an example , he allowed them to live in his house at the beginning... Even bought clothes for them when he wasn't forced too ). Even in the series. He's just completely oblivious to everything that is happening. Ironically he's the most naive character of the series ( either in the book / series or moovie ). And that's quite hilarious considering he's working in a bank and is supposed to be very clever and careful about everything..... which he isn't of course... lol.

I always liked Lemony Snicket’s interpretation of adults in A Series of Unfortunate Events. The majority were oblivious to the Baudelaire’s claims of Count Olaf and they went ignored, thinking it was the wild imagination of children. They believed what they saw on the surface rather than looking at the signs and bad acting. The bad adults in the book exploited this, using fear and influence to make their misdeeds go unnoticed or played down. The good adults who listened and believed the Baudelaire’s were typically ignored by the other adults, didn’t have enough power to stop anything, or they were too passive to speak up to those higher than them.

Everyone else is sad while they sing it, even Count Olaf (heck, the Baudelaires are near-catatonic), but he's smiling and bouncing with the music, even as he sings words like, "but to me there's nothing but gloom and despair". Poe is able to enjoy the melody by ignoring all the misery around him. Olaf is singing about the world as uncomfortable pants, explaining his discomfort and will to wear and hence bend the world to his will. And Lemony seems a bit obsessed by the past. Very telling of their characters.
@bradleyogilvie88697 жыл бұрын
This song is perfect for the series. Not only are the lyrics fitting, which are mostly depressing but some parts humorous(ill-fitting pants), but also each of the singers and the tone they are singing in. You can tell that Lemony and the children are depressing from everything that's happened, that Count Olaf is sad but because he's not winning, and that Mr. Poe is mostly ignorant of how bad things truly are. It's a great way to end the season.

I just now realized, after listening to the song so many times, that each of the singers actually convey the emotion their character is feeling at that moment. I only heard that once I listened to the song without watching the video. Lemony is matter-of-fact with a hint of regret. Olaf is sinister with a hint of glee. Poe is happy and oblivious. Klaus has almost given up. Violet is holding back tears. At one point you can even hear her voice almost go into crying, just to be picked back up slightly again. Sunny is angry and sinister at the same time, which you can hear even if it's only whistling.

Lyrics, which can also be found by turning on the captions: You may think that the Baudelaires ought to prevail, and be tucked some place all safe and sound. Count Olaf captured and rotting in jail, his henchpeople nowhere around. But there’s no happy endings, not here and not now, this tale is all sorrows and woes. You may dream that justice and peace win the day, but that’s not how the story goes. You might think that two parents, both brave and both true, would live till a nice ripe old age, but I’m sad to say I have bad news for you, the curtain rings down on the stage. Yes there’s no happy endings, not here and not now, this tale is all sorrows and woes. You might dream that justice and peace win the day, but that’s not how the story goes. I once loved a girl, and she thought well of me, we thought we’d be happy together, but now I’m alone as you can well see, she’s cold in her grave forever. There’s no happy endings, not here and not now, this tale is all sorrows and woes. You might dream that justice and peace win the day, but that’s not how the story goes. The world is a pair of ill-fitting pants, and other dire, hideous clothes. You might think that three children would lead pleasant lives, but that’s not how the story goes. Some people smile at the end of the day. Some people laugh I suppose. But to me there is nothing but gloom and despair, that’s just how the story goes. That’s just how the story goes!

2020 anyone? I’ve watched this series so many times but I just can’t let go of the story. I absolutely love everything about it but for some reason there are just things that I can’t stop thinking about. 💕

jdng86 he’s not bad. He’s the one who’s trying to keep the Baudelaire’s safe. He’s not only doing it because he’s going to lose his job. Sure he’s all happy in the song, but that doesn’t mean he’s bad. You see how in the end he turns it off just like a radio? He just doesn’t know how the Baudelaires feel. I’m on the baudelaires side but I’m just saying he’s not a bad person.

Despite all the warnings from Snicket in every episode, I took it humorously and greatly enjoyed the show as a comedy. But this came up, and it actually WAS depressing. The music, the characters' attitude... it's like after constantly moving from adventure to adventure, they all take some time to really contemplate the miserable situation they're in, and the fact that it's far from over each with his own reaction. Snicket is like "Still hoping ? Didn't I warn you ? Well, you asked for it". And he can tell from experience, since he also suffered greatly. Olaf is not all planning and maniacally laughing like he seemed prone to do during the whole season. He's actually quietly thinking while having a drink, like he just came back from an exhausting job. He's also displaying a cynical point of view, typical of people who themselves have no more hope because of everything they went through. This is one of the biggest hints of his deeper nature, despite not revealing anything. The orphans are just... resigned. They know their life is shit, and that it will not improve, and they accepted it and silently wait for the next unfortunate event. And Mr Poe, the only friend they have, who could actually do something... doesn't give a crap.

The broad comedy a lot of people are complaing about is actually necessary. Because if it wasn't there, the series would be more depressing than Leaving Las Vegas, Requiem for a Dream and Oldboy combined.

@@randompotato8110 I feel like it's less that he's an idiot and more that he just didn't have much investment in the lives of these children. He just wanted to move on to his next assignment and be done with it. I just don't see the view where he's just some sort of bumbling buffoon, but everyone gets to have their own opinions.

I nearly cried after the song. Also this is weird but Mr Poe is a jerk. He's unaware that people are living unpleasant lives, doesn't give a CRAP about when the Baudelaires say "This man is Count Olaf!" and as the song is being played, he bounces around, smiles, and EVEN when the SADDEST parts of the song happen, he STILL smiles. He's an accurate representation of the world sometimes too. But I REALLY think he cared more in the book than the series. You can tell, because when he informs the Baudelaires their parents died in the book, he even had a sad frown! But in the series, he keeps a straight face and smiles a little. God, and don't get me started on HOW unhelpful he is. So I guess this Poe is sort of ignorant, and I hate that, so I guess he IS a good actor?
@faiqachaudhry22325 жыл бұрын
I like to think that his character displays those people who know about the despair and unfortunate events in ones lives but decide to ignore it or to not do something about it. This song shows us the innocent people who have to go through hard times (Baudelaires) and try their best to get through them with courage and bravery, it shows us a man(Olaf), who as evil as he is, and whose bad deeds are inexcusable, also had to go through many hard times which led him to make the decisions he made, and it shows us those ignorant people (Poe) who do nothing because it doesn't affect them or they only think about themselves. I loved ASOUE because each character has so much depth in them and it leaves you wanting more

When I first watched the show, I was still reading the books. I would read a book and then watch the two episodes for the books while waiting for the next book to be available in the library. When I got to The End, I wanted to cry, but couldn't because I had read the end to The End literally the same day, so there was no point in crying from watching the end of The End when I already cried from reading the end of The End. THE END
