This is a tutorial of how to use two nanostation m2 loco units and extend the internet connection from one location to another location (for example 200 feet away). The attached pdf from this video can be found at:
www.afrikanet.net/help/d2/WLAN...
I do NOT own the pdf document nor have I written it. I'm just referring to it as a source of help online. It was very useful in my case.

m hall Both of my routers are secured with a password (WPA2 security). The nanostations that I have just use the defaults username and password, thus sort of unsecured. You cannot connect to the nanostations, unless you first connect to the router they belong on. This is secure enough in my case.

I must say, love this video! I have a 300 yard house to house situation where I had a "mickey-mouse" set up. I bought these nanostations, followed your video step by step (which is AWESOME btw) and my connection isn't any better than what I had. This puzzles me because all I had was a cheapo router and a TP link repeater as my setup. These Nano's should be a LOT better, but either I didn't so something correctly or.....well....I don't know an or! HaHa! I'll watch the video again and see what I come up with. Great stuff, though! Love how you do things step by step!

Cayrick, I tested the connection with just one nanostation, and yes, it will work. It will work slower. The reason for this is because the nanostation can send out a signal far, but your computer probably has a wifi card that can only respond with a weak signal back to the nanostation that is location a ways away. If you have a way to make the responding signal stronger, you'll probably be able to get away with it. Line of sight is key, and going through windows greatly kills the signal.

If you disable the DHCP Server option on the second router (you set up as access point). You will permit the first router to assign IP Addresses to the bridged connection (you can only have 1 dhcp server per subnet, reason you had to change to 192.167)

Thank you for this video. It is an excellent source of information for people like me who have a minimal knowledge of Networking. You mentioned that I will lose 1/2 my speed because of the bridge, so I was wondering, would it not be easier to run say a netgear range extender for such a short run? Or are you still in the same boat where the devices network adapter just cannot transmit far enough, thus the need for an second AP?
@guitarsite10520
@guitarsite10520 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words Video Guy. As far as I know, the range extender halfs your speeds as well. Both of my routers are near the edges of the one house, and the other shack. I cannot put an extender because that would mean putting it in between the houses, which is outside. The extender would not reach, and would not give a strong enough signal. I think that the nanostations have much more advantages over any typical extender out there. You can control signal strength with the nanostations, they are rock solid in their connection, and are weather robust. They have been working outside through 100+ F weather, and currently -15 F winter. Here is the reason for having the second nanostation in the shack: If I just had one nanostation at home shooting signal towards, the shack, the devices in the shack would pick up the signal. The problem is that the devices are too weak to transmit signal back to the nanostation over 150 feet. This is why they transmit signal to the router in the shack, which transmits it to the nanostation in the shack, and that signal gets sent to the home nanostation.

What does it mean exactly when, "your speeds halve on a bridge"? Does it really halve in performance band width speed. In my case DL speed is approx. 3.0Mbps on each router does that actually mean that if I disconnect bridge from first router just like before my DL speed was 6Mbps which streaming & downloading is twice as fast? To clarify files could actually be downloaded in half the time than with bridge connected?

I need help! I used 2 nano station M5 last year to push internet across an open field about 0.4 mile away. Worked great last year. This year I went to hook it back up and it will only connect for about 30 seconds and then kick off. All I am trying to run off the second nanostation is a security camera. It runs through a router. My friend said to try his M2 nanostations and it was the same result. Any ideas on what it might be or what I should try? Please HELP!

Thank you so much sir for the taking the time to help us out. Its helped me alot. could i eliminate the first router? by plugging my dsl right into the nanostation? i have the same scenario that you drawed up except i'm about 1600ft away. but i'd like to eliminate the first router or would i then lose wifi at the first house? then i could probably use a omni antenna (picostation2) with a nanostationm2 as a receiver at the second house.
@guitarsite10520
@guitarsite10520 10 жыл бұрын
You could probably hookup the dsl line to the nanostation. I think the picostation 2 at the first house as a transmitter would work, and the nanostation as a receiver would receive. Realize that you'll probably diminish the signal distance with the picostation as it is omnidirectional vs a directional nano. If your second house is close in distance, you should be fine. At 1600 feet, you might be better off with 2 nanostations instead and just spring for a router at the first house. Again, I'm not an absolute expert so please check up on this. Perhaps the picostation will do just fine at 1600 feet, but I don't know. If you are thinking about getting a router, don't overspend. I bought a relatively in expensive "ASUS (RT-N12/B) Wireless-N 300" from amazon for $40 6 months ago. I then loaded it with shibby's tomato software (check the amazon reviews for more details on loading this). With the tomatoUSB software on it, it becomes a powerful router that has served me just fine.
@Designandrew
@Designandrew 10 жыл бұрын
You can't 'eliminate' the router! The router is likely your modem too! So yes you need the router at the house. Also I would just use two Nano's, because the second nano in your shack will be in long range wifi client mode, and it will have no problem sending and receiving signal from your house, even if it isn't omni directional. But you could use an omni, it's up to you.

Hey thanks a lot for this video. I am wanting to do exactly this, range is a little more (400 yards) but I have clear LOS so I believe it should work. This may be a dumb question as I am definitely a newbie to setting this type of gear up but I am going to ask anyway. After you set up the router at your house (the one connected to comcast) and you next went into Air Os for 1st NS; at this point is the NS connected to the router. That is, while you are making changes to NS 1 in Air Os is it connected to the router via ethernet cable or directly to the computer via ethernet cable?
@guitarsite10520

Hi Steven. The first time that I access the NS 1 (Nanostation) from my computer, it is directly connected to my computer via ethernet cable. Only after I setup a custom ip for NS 1, then I can plug it in directly into my router and access it using wifi through the router.

Guys this video doesn't explain this very well sorry but basically, he set one Nano up as a normal WIFI access point. Then he setup a second Nano in a mode called "long range WIFI client" (google those words if you want to see a diagram), essentially the second nano acts like a giant wifi antenna, so that he can pick the house wifi from his shack. He then patches the wifi client into a second wifi router in the shack, which provides network in the shack. I have the same setup at my house.

In this setup would both the Nano be able to provide wifi for other devices eliminating wireless AP/routers on both sides? I mean they work point to point plus serving devices connecting to the network via wifi. What i am planning to do is House A has the internet connection, house B is around 500ft away. House A a router will connect to the Nano(A) it will also serve as another AP in House A. Nano(B) will receive the signal from Nano(A) that has internet. Nano(B) will serve as the wifi AP on House B.

I am trying to set this up. I did note that 192.167.1.1. is not a reserved IP address for a local network. Thus, it could theoretically conflict with an external address you might want to access. Wouldn't it be better to select one of the reserved ranges? See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reserved_IP_addresses
@sheberly
@sheberly 9 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it will conflict with any outside IP's as you are behind a NAT router, however there is no need to use that particular IP address. If you want to segment the network use something like 192.168.2.1 for the 2nd router, however no second router is needed at all in this network design and should be kept to one router.

and to 123456jhj. u need to have the second suffix in the ip address to be different so it creates a new server for the second access point. the third suffix is used to assign your tablets or whatever an identity. which is why he set the range on the static ip to .0 and .49, so you connect up to 50 devices to the [second router. "192.167.0/49"] vs the [first router "192.168.0/49"]

The nano stations are only being used for the bridge. So I am sure the secondary nano station is plugged into the secondary router WAN port and then configuring the wireless and LAN portion of the secondary router on a second network. (192.168.7.x) as he stated in the video with his own secondary network DHCP Scope. This would mean that computers in the secondary location would be on a separate network of 192.168.7.X. Another way to set it up would be to plug the secondary nano station into a switch this way he would extend the original network to the switch and then for local wireless just use an access point on the original subnet. Basically, everything would be on the 192.168.1.X subnet. Wired and wireless devices would grab DHCP from the one router from the main location. Either he didnt realize this or he is just using the devices he has. Either way it works, just a bit over connected. :)

It sounds to me like your trying to use your nanostation as both a point to point client AND access point, as well as feeding a router broadcasting wifi as well. By the time your said and done, you will have created so much 2.4 interference your through-put and quality will be terrible. There is a much much easier way of doing this by using the Nanostation as a WDS wireless access point. Your 2nd nanostation will act as the point to point client, router (if desired), and access point, with no need for additional equipment. I suggest you only use 1 router on this entire network, it will be more then sufficient. All DHCP and routing will take place at the core router connected to the internet, there is no need for any more routers in the network. When you setup a WDS network, all AP's act as bridges, allowing clients to pull DHCP information from the core router. This will allow your entire network to be manageable thru one subnet of IP's, without any complicated port forwarding needed. When you setup a nanostation as a WDS access point with peers, your nanostation connects to its WDS host (nanostation 1) and also broadcasts a a wifi signal for clients to connect to at the same time. No 2nd router is needed, and only 1 channel is used so interference is kept to a minimum. You will want your first nanostation connected via Ethernet cable at your router. Turn your routers wifi off, as you will not be using it but instead using the nanostation as your AP. This nanostation will also send signal to your 2nd nanostation, that will be acting as both a client and access point or "wifi repeater" station. All and all this should be a 15 minute setup for the nanostations if that. Extremely simple and affordable way to extend wifi range without much sacrifice. It will cut your available wifi through-put in half, but frankly half is more then enough to serve most any remote clients needs. I believe the nanostation is capable of 150mbs throughput, so by doing a wireless wds network you cut that down to 75mbs at each radio, still more then sufficient for 98% of wifi users.

Awesome info - thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm hoping maybe this could be simplified even more in my situation? I'm trying to extend my dad's WiFi signal from his house - a log cabin (very thick log walls) out to his pole barn about 30 yards away where he needs it for his business computer and tablet to use card readers, etc. Inside the house, he has decent Wifi signal. Outside the house - not so much (likely due to the thick walls.) So I was looking at purchasing one of these NanoStation Logo M2's to put outside the cabin near where the main Wifi/Router is in side the house to broadcast the signal out to the barn. Now - the question I have is, do I NEED a second M2 in the barn to receive and repeat that signal? OR could I simply utilize an existing router that has WDS capability and can act as an extender/repeater?

Sean I have this exact setup with 2 routers. I am using the second router to connect to wifi cameras. Are you saying that if I change nano 2 to a access point that I will be able to get rid of router 2? What is the difference between as access point and a wifi repeater? Everything is working now but if I can simplify my setup I will. Thanks
@sheberly
@sheberly 9 жыл бұрын
An access point is just a term for a source of wifi signal. If your m2 is in access point mode you can either run it is a router or bridge. If bridged it will just relay dhcp info from the core router on the network as if the devices were attached with an ethernet cable. If you run router mode the m2 will dish out its own dhcp to all clients that connect to it, essentially double nat'ing the network. Either will work but if you run 2 routers and want to access a device that is on the other router you will need to setup some port forwarding. If you run one router for the whole network everything will be accessible from any point on the network.

Download the ubiquiti discovery tool and scan for it. If you left it set to dhcp it might have a different ip now. You should set it static with an ip outside of your routers dhcp range. Like 192.168.1.200 or so. If all else fails, you can simply default and reprogram.

+Amit India The steps shown in the picture is fine. The very first one has to be Access Point and the other should be station if you want to bridge wireless connection.

+Rudra Ghosh He is using different APs because he is assuming the wireless connection for two different sites. When the wireless range gets weakened, and you want to connect to the first site then you would want to bridge the wireless connection into the other site.

You are explaing too rapid for new non- high technical installers especially with the computer pointer and before I can understand what you are doing you are jumping back and forth too fast to the next stage. If you can redo your narrative that would help for an ACCESS installation. Thanks

That had to be, without a doubt, the worst setup explanation I have seen in a long time. It's not like you are running Cisco devices and VLANs between building floors or anything. Why would you introduce a second router and not a switch of the second Nano device? Also, why would you tell the listeners that you setup your LAN address to anything you'd like (even saying you could set it to 192.168.1.20) when you know you can't have two devices with the same address. Especially the default address of the NanoStation.
