Soooo, now even more fun facts about the song/band! - The videoclip's feast part was shot in the living room of the bassist. - Right before Odin enters, there is a Hebrew part that is interesting on multiple levels. 1) It is a bent version of a quote from the Bible. Originally it's "Shema Israel, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Ehad", which roughly translates to "Hear Israel, the Lord is your God, the Lord is one". 2) It is obviously bent to fit the Norse theme of the song. 3) The exact same thing is written above it in Hebrew, correctly. It makes sense, since the bassist speaks Hebrew. 4) The bassist speaks 7 other languages and has a PhD in Astrophysics. - At the ending there is a line "falegn-amen". Falegname means Carpenter in Italian. - Tony

There are manymany other references, many of which I couldn't catch, and there are some that I caught but don't necessarily think it's worth writing it down here. There is a great video that discusses all references, unfortunately it's in Spanish and I don't speak the language. I am putting the link of the video here so maybe a generous Spanish-speaking person with some time to spare can help us out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWXWf5KofbCgisk

Hi, a Spanish speaker here with plenty of time to spare. Here are the references: - Systembolaget: the only place you can buy alcohol in Sweden in order to fight alcoholism. - Permafrost: a layer of ice that is stuck to the floor. - Amon Amarth & Hammerfall: two Swedish bands. Amon Amarth is death metal, Hammerfall is power metal. - Slayer of the giants: the giants attack the humans and Thor protects us. - For the plunder and the rape (...) for the chopping of the heads: what vikings did. - For Normandy, Britannia, Greenland, Scandinavia: places where the vikings were. - For Nicaragua & Azerbaidjan we don't sing at all: the vikings were in Europe, so they didn't know where Nicaragua (Central America) or Azerbaidjan (Transcaucasia) were. - Shema Yggdrasil: it's a reference to the Torah, where the original is Shema Israel (listen, Israel). Yggdrasil is the mythical tree that connects all the worlds in the Nordic mythology. - Odin eloheinu: "Odin, our god" in Jewish. - I'm a gentle god: a reference to the extreme Swedish politeness nowadays compared to their viking past. - Master of IKEA: IKEA is the most known Swedish company, and even has the same colors as the flag of Sweden. - Gloria patri furnituribus in nomine IKEA: a slight reference to Powerwolf, a German power metal band that usually sings in Latin and uses church organs in their background mixed with metal. It also makes sense, because they're Italians and Latin was what Romans spoke. - Beddinge and Kivik: a clic clac sofa bed and a modular sofa. - The pencils and the meatballs: things you can find in any IKEA. - Knopparp: Swedish for doorknob. - Ora pro nobis: Latin for "pray for us". - Besta TV: a sideboard. - Knisa grey: an armchair. - Sasha Grey: a pornstar. - The movie in the background: it's Trading Places (1983), starring Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy, and it's considered as a Christmas comedy.

The "horse meatball" line is a reference to a controversy in 2013 when inspectors found traces of horse meat in some IKEA meatballs in Europe. IKEA (and their supplier Dafgård) ended up tracing it down to the meat supplier, who claimed they were tricked by one of the butchers they sourced the meat from, who in turn claimed they were duped (by I'm not sure who). So, there were no legal repercussions for anyone.

The thing I got from this song the first time I watched it was that it feels like it's a style parody of these big Christmas numbers that American evangelicals choirs will do (or did when I was raised with that in the 90s). They would involve the elements of a traditional Christmas hymn, a church choir, making it "rock" style for part of the song,and the thing I found most specific, breaking into a traditional Jewish song for part of the song. Nanowar are Italian, and I just don't know how international this very specific style of church Christmas music was. Also 🤘

It's worth noting that Nanowar's bass player (and band founder, I think) speaks a bunch of different languages, so he's certainly responsible for this. He actually did a video to present their then-new album in 10 different languages, including a part in hebrew: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pampZqGej7Bmf8k

The language at 7:47 is Hebrew, it says "Odonai Alohenu" which is a parody of the Hebrew "Adoni Elohenu" (from the Hebrew Scriptures) which means "God, the God of us", possibly translated as "God (is) our God". The Hebrew they use *might* say "Odin (is) our God" but they have spelled Odin phonetically in Hebrew. It seems more likely he would have a different name in Hebrew.
@gyllenborg914 жыл бұрын
Listening to this, I honestly thought this band (Nanowar of Steel) was Swedish, for a few reasons; - "Systembolaget", like many has already pointed out, is the only place in Sweden where you can by alcohol (except bars, restaurants, etc.) - IKEA is a Swedish company/chain/brand. I'm pleased to know it's run by Odin. - And you said you found it funny that they were having a "Christmas feast" and celebrating Odin. But honestly? Although Swedish Christmas have adopted the whole Santa Clause, angels, holy spirit and yada-yada, the majority of the Swedish population DON'T celebrate it with religion/Christianity in mind. In fact, the majority of the Swedish population aren't religious. In Sweden, it isn't called Christmas either. It's actually called "Jul/Juletid" which comes from the historical Germanic festival; "Yule/Yuletide". And Yule was a pagan festival/celebration that originally was connected to the Wild Hunt and the god Odin. Just some information you might find interesting... or not. :)

A few christmas facts: - Christmas is also known as "Yuletide". That's because Odin was called "Father Yule". This is also why christmas has never been called "christmas" in Scandinavia. We still call it "Yule's Eve". - Odin has helpers in the form of two ravens who report to him who has done good and who has done bad. - Based on those reports, Odin rides his eight-legged horse Sleipnir over the rooftops on December 24th, granting blessings or punishments accordingly. The modern Santa has eight reindeers pulling his sled. They represent the eight legs of Odin's horse. - A goat made of straw is a traditional christmas decoration in Scandinavia. It symbolized the two rams, Tanngnjóstr and Tanngrisnir, that pull Thor's wagon across the sky. - In Scandinavia, we don't eat turkey for christmas. The most common dish is the "yule ham". It represents the pig Särimner in Valhalla who's a pig that gets slaughtered and eaten every night and is reborn every morning.
