Nao Sogabe: Oud & Lute Music for your Soul (compilation and mix from the album: Beginner's Guide to Oud & Lute Music of Nao Sogabe 2006-2022) KZbin channel: www.youtube.com/@NaoSogabe/featured Website: naochika.com/ OUD & LUTE - King of Instruments The origin of the oud belongs to the ancient times and similar instruments were used by the Babylonian and ancient Egyptian. Until today, oud is played as the “king of instruments” in Arabic culture. The oud found his way to Europe in medieval times and it became “lute”. During the Renaissance the lute was also regarded as the “king of instruments”. THE OUD is believed to have originated in ancient Iraq during the Akkadian Empire in the second millennium BCE. Initially, it was played in gatherings that took place around the caliph (a Muslim ruler and successor to Muhammad). It was later introduced to Europe in the form of the lute. Starting in the 1930s, small ensembles consisting of three to four instruments emerged, typically including an oud, a qanoun, percussion, and a violin. These ensembles accompanied singers, such as the renowned Egyptian performer Umm Kulthum. Eventually, the practice of playing the oud expanded to larger stages, and in 1972, the great Iraqi player Mounir Bashir presented it in France as a solo instrument. It is a fundamental instrument in the small ensemble of classical Arab music. The oud is an integral part of our daily life. It is not expensive to purchase, and medium-quality ouds are easily found throughout the Middle East. Almost every household has one, and families play it together. Everyone wants their son or daughter to learn music, and the oud is the first instrument they buy. I grew up with this instrument; my family and I played it during celebrations. The oud is a part of our everyday life. THE LUTE is a stringed instrument that can be either fretted or unfretted. It is known by various names, such as the Arab lute, French lute, German laute, Italian luito, and Spanish laud. Lutes have been widely used in Europe since the 13th century. Lute music flourished, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was a leading musical instrument during the Renaissance and Baroque periods and is still played in Arab countries. The lute was introduced into Turkish music in the 18th century. The type of lute used in Turkish music is distinguished from the oud by its fretted neck. The lute is similar to the oud in many ways. It is made of leather, and many different types of wood can be used in its production. The lute differs from the oud in that its body is narrower and its neck slightly longer. In the West, there are between 6 and 24 types of stringed lutes. In Turkey, the 7-stringed lute is preferred. The person who plays the lute is called a "lavtavi," or lute player. The European lute and the modern Near Eastern lute both descend from a common ancestor, though they followed different evolutionary paths. The oud has been used in a wide variety of instrumental music from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque period and was the most important instrument in secular music during the Renaissance. In the Baroque period, the lute and the bass were two of the instruments used to play the accompanying parts. It is also an accompanying instrument in vocal works. The lute player improvises a chordal accompaniment based on the figured bass line. I'm not sure it's a good choice. I love lute, but this, it's really boring, it's airport music. For real interesting lute songs, you should listen at the dedicated playlist on the KZbin channel Voices of Music : Voices of Music TV Sundays at Ten Season 4 Episode 18 David Tayler.
