It probably won't come back and I'll tell you why. From what people in the fashion industry have admitted anonymously, designers don't want the supermodels to return. Historically, models have had the least power in fashion and are considered replaceable/disposable by those who do have the power (designers, magazine editors, photographers). If designers get tired of using a model, her career is over. But during the 1990s, supermodels gained a lot of power and autonomy. They were grown women with strong personalities, in charge of their careers. They couldn't be controlled as easily as before. The public's interest in them gave them an advantage. Because they became as famous as movie stars, they could dictate terms and charge a lot for their services. The Trinity (Linda, Christy, Naomi) could tell editors and photographers, "I'll only work with you if you also hire my model friend here." The supermodels had independence and couldn't be ordered about and designers resented it. Designers also didn't like the fact that these models overshadowed their clothes. So, to prevent this phenomenon from happening again, they promoted younger and younger models and made the newer ones starve themselves to bones. It's easier to control teen girls, not 20-something women. It's hard for a teen model to assert herself when she's hungry all the time, starving herself to fit into the smaller sample sizes chosen by designers (from size 4-6 during the 90s to today's size 0-2). The 90s was a golden age for models and there was a lot more ethnic variety. Many of today's models are cookie-cutter and interchangeable and have bodies that are malnourished. Fashion's current idea of beauty is limited to mostly European features. Sad.

Thank you for this video. This was when supermodels were really supermodel! They were genuinely beautiful with exceptional features such as high cheek bones, full lips, feminine figure and a rocking personalities. Also, each of them had a signature walk or something unique they bring to the fashion world. These are truly "Supermodels". Today every ugly, flat chested, flat ass, bony, reality stars and average girl think that they are a supermodel! Really Kendall? Really Gigi? I hope you watch this video and lean something. Being tall and thin does not automatically make you a supermodel. I've seen more attractive girls at the mall or even walking down the street.

I think today the beauty standards for a model are far more accepting than before. The supermodels of the 90s were all about glamour. Big hair, excessive makeup, bigger than life attitude. Today there's more variety and diversity. More models of color, of different body shapes, and unconventional beauties. I think its good that the term of beauty is expanding.

Absolutely they were THE Trinity. Surround that with Cindy, Tatiana, Claudia, Helena, Karen Stephanie, Yasmin, Carla, et al and we are talking about an era that coined the term Supermodel. There have been models of every decade since the 40’s that represent the pinnacle of modeling. It heightened in the 60’s, climbed through the 70’s, and exploded in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It peaked...although there is no denying that there is very gorgeous talent on the runway today, we have seen the parting of the Red Sea here at the Versace show...really reaching that level with the Freedom 90 video and then here. People need to understand that, yes, they were curvier, but they were still very skinny. Someone said they were between size 4-6 which isn’t true. They were still size 2 to maybe a 4. They were grown women though and not the children they use today.
