In her 2016 Edward W. Said lecture, Naomi Klein examines how Said's ideas of racial hierarchy, including Orientalism, have been the silent partners to climate change since the earliest days of the steam engine, continuing to present day decisions to let entire nations drown and others warm to lethal levels. The lecture looks at how Said’s bold universalist vision might form the basis for a response to climate change grounded in radical inclusion, belonging and restorative justice.
ABOUT THE LRB
Since 1979, the London Review of Books has stood up for the tradition of the literary and intellectual essay in English. Each issue contains up to 15 long reviews and essays by academics, writers and journalists. There are also shorter art and film reviews, as well as poems and a lively letters page.
A typical issue moves through political commentary to science or ancient history by way of literary criticism and social anthropology. So, for example, an issue can open with a piece on the rhetoric of war, move on to reassessing the reputation of Pythagoras, follow that with articles on the situation in Iraq, the 19th-century super-rich, Nabokov’s unpublished novel, how saints got to be saints, the life and work of William Empson, and an assessment of the poetry of Alice Oswald.

I heard before that Naomi Klein started to be an activist for her children. It reminds me of the quote: “We don’t inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." -- Wendell Barry

Her new book: "No is Not Enough " is an urgent read with: "Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America" By Nancy MacLean. Please let's try to get everyone inside (and out, who can hear talks) discuss this MAJOR new work. MacLean and Klein discussing this: URGENT!

@@Praisethesunson At this point, dont you mean class warfare or even capitalist oligarch dictatorship? Class struggle seems to downplay the severity I would say. Even in Western countries, we are pretty much all wage-slaves to the rich elites now.

How's this for othering? Here's what the mayor of Fort McMurray, Melissa Blake, had to say in 2013 about how global warming will impact people. It's from a piece called Big Mac from walrus.ca. (Keep in mind as you're reading this that the entire population of Fort McMurray, more than 80,000 people, many of whom work in the ecological disaster known as the Alberta tar sands, were forced to evacuate their city due to a raging fire in early May of this year during bone-dry drought conditions with temperatures hotter than Tucson, Arizona.) "Blake doesn’t miss a beat. “I’m a big believer that, yes, the climate is changing. If the climate goes up by two, three, four degrees in the future, we’re lucky to be here in Fort McMurray. We’re lucky not to be in California or BC. They’re going to fall in the ocean. In a place like this, we’re going to survive a lot better.” You mean digging up bitumen is a good thing, because it will make Fort McMurray’s winters milder? With a nervous laugh, she assents: “And that means my real estate becomes a very important asset in the future, so I’m not selling my house anytime soon.”"

It is extremely unfortunate that we must face the one last remaining chance we have left to save what might be left of our civilization and the biosphere. We must make war on global warming; literally all world governments must proclaim an all out war measures legislation. We must do this quickly and effectively. Within the space of two years at most we have to stop all greenhouse emissions, and I mean all; all of industry and all means of transportation must transit to clean energy. Simultaneously we must remove the CO2 that we have dumped into our atmosphere by reinserting it back deep into the ground by erecting millions of air capture sequestration towers on every empty land spaces available along with the planting of the fastest growing trees available. We will plant them in peoples’ yards, in parks, in ditches along highways, on roof tops, along with reforestation of livestock pastures and anywhere else possible. Also simultaneously we must construct vast electric generating solar farms, wind generators on all agricultural lands, thousands of geothermal energy plants, tidal generating installations and any other clean energy projects like dams, nuclear reactors, and zero energy from unacknowledged special access projects if they exist. If you think all of this is ridiculous, I agree that it is. However it is our only chance. The cost of this will be at least 80 trillion dollars. This will be expropriated from the fossil fuel corporations, from their managers and associated industries. They caused the problem and they will pay for it. For more details contact me at ghleg@mymts.net I will email you my paper no charge. This movement requires millions of like-minded members if there is any hope of success. WOGW association.

MonoCulture? MicroClimates? MegaEconomies? 'We The People' tire of redundant rhetoric that stamps journalism for whose agenda, exactly? Rather, by circulating through this world I am learning more about being connected and transparent with authentic people vs. trying to keep up with who's who and who quotes who about what others say regarding global turning points. Is anyone listening to the little people . . . ?

There is another excellent reason why not eat meat.. it is a house of horrors, not like the farms of 1800's.. and it really bugs me when people who should know better and should intuit better ignore the issue. The cruelty and sadism involved spills and contaminates the society and culture, how could it not. Maybe she feels she has to be a one issue crusader, and perhaps, in the politics of that, she is right. But one thing begot the other, and the psychopathy of animal utilization eventually came around, as karma always will, to bite us in the ass.

Some important and insightful points are made here by Klein. What let's us down is her spiteful shoe-horning of her hatred of Israel into the equation. She just can't help herself I suppose. Never a balanced analysis of the conflict for people like her, all one sided bias and extremely disappointing.
