As a huge Tolkien fan, I have to say that once I've heard your music, your voice and seen your face, my first thought was "This must be Tinúviel!" and you bear more than a passing resemblance to Edith Bratt, the one who inspired the character. I've always felt that the harp has an almost magical, ethereal quality that is unmatched save by a very few instruments.

The oldest reference to a harp is in Scotland (known here as a clàrsach). The earliest depictions of a harp can be found carved on 8th century Pictish stones in Scotland. These stones show the familiar triangular framed harp, with a fore pillar. It's usage apparently spread south from Scotland to the Anglo Saxons who commonly used gut strings (our Pictish harps were strung with horsehair), and also west to the Gaels of the Scottish Highlands and on to Ireland. The earliest written reference to a harp is found in the Book of Deer, a 10th century manuscript from the north of Scotland. The manuscript contains a poem that mentions a harpist named Calum Cille. It was a popular instrument in Scotland during the Middle Ages and was used in both secular and religious music. It was also used as a symbol of our identity. The harp continued to be played in Scotland until the 18th century. However, the popularity of the instrument declined in the 19th century quite a bit. Then in the 20th century, there was a revival of interest in the harp in Scotland and it's now played by both traditional and classical musicians, still being used mostly in folk music and in Celtic music.

That's why I love the harp. It's really soothing. Played the violin, got discouraged (super rigid intructor) never touched it again. Not on paino. Which is a pretty decent instrument. Can be soothing and nice, can be deep, can be both. Of course, it all depends on what you are playing. Well, I'm just playing cause I like beautiful music lol nothing else in particular. 1yr self taught piano now. If I can only play the harp.. but well.. I'm a dude 😅 I just love how it sounds.. don't like to play it though. "Maybe" but not counting on it lol. I'll just rely on your channel 😃

New to this channel - random KZbin feed. Fourth video watched. Speaking for her neighbors: it isn't the late night harp music, it is the deer pest problems that started when she moved in. 😁 Okay - sure multi skilled instrumentalist, but when she pulled out the plastic encased xylohone thing (not sure what it was - I'm mostly musically illiterate, though I might play percussions better than a chimp) - at that point she was just showing off! 😁 I have to subscribe just because of her broad skill sets, excellent execution, and positive content (and my deer fetish - did I type that out loud - crap). 👍

@@NaomiSV Ahhh that's so good to know. I started learning music on recorders and then piano, as most children do, but I never managed to get proficient. It was singing that clicked for me, so I went through my grades for classical singing and my piano fell by the wayside a little. Hopefully, there's enough in my brain left to pick up something like harp. It's so beautiful, I would love it!
@NaomiSV
@NaomiSV Жыл бұрын
Very cool that you’re into classical singing! Honestly, the point of music should be to have fun, not to be proficient. If you’re interested in learning the harp, you should go for it! Harpsicles are relatively affordable (harps are expensive…) and a good way to test whether you enjoy playing before committing to a bigger harp. It’s worth checking music stores for rentals too!

A harp is a healing instrument...Like when David played to King Saul it overcame the spirit of melancholy that was assailing him? A natural wood harp must be especially so. Like I like to play a classical guitar from rosewood and mahogany, etc. With the harp as with the guitar it is maybe the sound vibrations that are beneficial, providing of course that the harp is played with sensitivity...Maybe you agree? Christmas blessings 🍎🍊🧀🍰🫖🍷🎄🎶🖋x ❤

Super! Bonne continuation.

Looks like harpists are the type of people who like all sorts of other instruments... like you play other instruments, then see harp and think "yea, I could probably figure that out" lmao. I've got a guitar, piano, frame drum and cello sitting in my room right now. My current plan right now is to write my own rendition to the Misty Mountains, distinct from the movie version, and try to use or at least emulate all of the original instrumentation called out: 1 harp 2 fiddles 3 flutes 1 drum 2 viols 2 clarinets And lots of singing. The viol and harp are the two main ones that really truly ought to be in it; the viol because it's such a dark, versatile sound and the harp because it's Thorin's main instrument (and I love that he has the main hero-king dwarf playing the harp, this classically feminine instrument, it makes the whole scene seem so much more beautiful). Plus, harps come up in the song like twice... Gotta actually procure a harp now... preferably one that is both small but well-made. I like my composition thus far... I can't wait to share it with people outside of friends and family and get it really polished.
