In this video, I'll look at attaching a Zip Drive to the Wii U to test out whether something so small can be formatted by the console, and if any games will fit on the disk.

I’m shocked the Wii U was able to even see the Zip disk

I assume the USB Zip drives just ID as a generic removable mass storage device. I'll have to check out mine in device manager and see what driver it uses.

Not anything. As I've shown in my videos, the host device has to support the particular subclass of USB Mass Storage you're attempting. For instance, the Wii U doesn't support the Floppy subclass. The console will literally not see the Floppy Drive, long before you get the formatting portion where the Wii OS would determine the floppy is too small (as with the 16MB CF card I tried) and not format it.

The Zip Drive is a USB Mass Storage Device that uses the SCSI subclass.

Also, since Wii U formats the entire disk (partitions included), the file system on the disk is irrelevant in this case. It could be in any format, since the Wii U isn't trying to read data from it, just format it.

@Walther Penne I'm not sure what you mean by "valid-hdd format". It you mean FAT32, that's not accurate. As I pointed out above, the Wii U doesn't care about which format...or any format...that is on the existing disk. It simply wipes it clean in favor of a new, single partition with its encrypted file system.

This is impressive. Very cool. No way, you're going to connect it to Jazz drive? I gotta see this.

Yup, guessed it correctly. Good old Jaz.

its just amazing that the wii u even sees such archaic tech hooked to it

See if you can find a Zip 250.

when did they stop making zip drive or have they yet?
@DengekiGamer2 жыл бұрын
There are 250MB and 750MB Zips out there. Or Buy a Iomega Rev.
@will_it_work2 жыл бұрын
The original Zip 100 is more iconic in people's mind, so that is the right format for this video. The Rev drives use the ATAPI Optical Subclass of USB Mass Storage, and are formatted in UDF, which won't work with the Wii U.
The Rev drives were weird. They were hard disks that Iomega forced to be used as Optical disks to use UDF. It's really weird. If you watch my video on DVD and the Wii U, you'll see how I was unable to get the Wii U to format regular optical media....unless it was a DVD-RAM. It's possible the Rev might work, if they had hard sectors vs. the spiral storage used by CD-R, DVD-R. That's essentially why DVD-RAM worked...it was optical subclass with traditional hard sectors. So I dunno, really.

What would happen if you tried to Plug in a Wii U Formatted HDD to a PC?
@will_it_work2 жыл бұрын
The file system is proprietary, so a Windows desktop or a Mac would not be able to read it.

Can you connect more stuff to the Mac?
@the_mariocrafter3 жыл бұрын
Like a floppy drive w/o the thumb drive specification to the Mac
@will_it_work3 жыл бұрын
Most things work with desktop computers like Mac and Windows. Those videos wouldn't be very exciting. That's why I like to feature consumer devices in my videos, because they are less likely to "just work".

@@will_it_work you should connect stuff to Android. If you want it nice and easy, buy a chrome cast of JadooTV
@will_it_work3 жыл бұрын
No thanks. Android is not a phone, it's a free mobile OS. Proving something works on one Android phone doesn't mean it works on the next. I have zero interest in Android.

@@will_it_work no, dont do it. I check every link and no credits for you an your channel. And this guy do the same what you do in video of Wii U and DVD Ram.
