Napoleon’s “beautiful enemy”: Luise, Queen of Prussia

The painting at 1:43 is noteworthy as it shows Napoleon's brilliant, peace loving Foreign minister and diplomat Prince Talleyrand ( a genuine French aristocrat who survived the French Revolution) as a shadowy figure in the background. Note that one of his feet is not visible -- he was born with a club-foot-- which caused his enemies to call him "the lame devil". He disapproved of Napoleon's expansionist wars, and gave him good counsel which Napoleon often disregarded. In 1808 he resigned as Foreign Minister, and for the good of France betrayed Napoleon to the Czar of Russia. At Tilsit, Talleyrand was (though he never showed it) personally as well as politically outraged at the treatment accorded Queen Louise. After her humiliating interview with Napoleon , Talleyrand sought a private meeting with her and sincerely consoled her with all his wisdom and charm. Word of his decency and kindness got back to the Prussian People, and remembered in Frances's favour much later at the Congress of Vienna, (1814-15) which put Europe back together after the fall of Napoleon.Talleyrand was then acting head-of-state. Despite his many enemies, Talleyrand, a visionary politician & statesman could think ahead of the zeitgeist and forsee consequences better than all his contemporaries, was later asked to serve as foreign minister under 4 successive French governments. He finished his astonishing career in his late 70's as Louis-Phillipe's ambassador to England, where he neotiated a treaty outlining the founding and boundaries of modern Belgium.

Beautiful homage to a great and beautiful queen, thank you! But nevertheless, please allow me to correct two mistakes. 1. The portrait at 5:53 does not feature Luise, but her sister Friederike. 2. Luise didn't have 10 sons. She gave birth to 10 children, but only 7 of them lived to reach adulthood. Her first child was a stillborn daughter, so Friedrich Wilhelm IV actually was her second child, but the first one to live. She had 4 sons and 3 daughters.

The Charlottenburg Palace was built in honour of, and namesake of Sophia Charlotte (Electress Consort of Brandenburg), the first Queen Consort of Prussia, and the grandmother of Frederick the Great. When Emperor Napoleon and his Marshals were standing at the tomb of Frederick II (the Great) he said: "Hats off, and salute, gentlemen. For, were HE still alive, we would not be here!"

Very very interesting, many thanks! Frederick II is the name of two giants: F. the Great and F. II Hohenstaufen, a man centuries ahead of his age.
