Күн бұрын

The battle was the culmination of the German Campaign of 1813 and involved 560,000 soldiers, 2,200 artillery pieces, the expenditure of 400,000 rounds of artillery ammunition, and 133,000 casualties, making it the largest battle of the Napoleonic Wars, and the largest battle in Europe prior to World War I.
Decisively defeated again, Napoleon was compelled to return to France while the Sixth Coalition kept up its momentum, dissolving the Confederation of the Rhine and invading France early the next year. Napoleon was forced to abdicate and was exiled to Elba in May 1814.

@@cinematicbattles559 It's a fantastic piece of work. Honestly, the Battle of Leipzig should have been the whole premise for a movie because it had all the elements of the brutality of the Napoleonic Wars while bringing both the genius of Napoleon, how still feared/powerful the French were at that period while the same time the Coalition learned from their mistakes while following the lead of Napoleon's ex-Marshel/now Sweden's King Bernodotte with the Trendelenburg plan. While critics bashed Bernodotte's progress on the battlefield, he was also playing intrigue with the Austrians for Sweden's best interests in the long run. At the same time, Alexander of Russia had a positive opinion of him just because of how the Austrians and higher-ups from Prussia viewed him not particularly well despite the fact that the file & rank Prussians viewed him favorably. Bernadotte was facing a lot intrigued by even his own allies, and he wanted to make the war of attrition a factor in reducing that threat by reducing his advance but still providing support to defeat his former master Napoleon.

For being a battle of nations it sure went against Napoleon's designs. The urban combat in the streets must've been quite a brutal and intense experience.

Had he not left his men in Leipzig his losses wouldn’t have been that high. He knew he lost from the beginning but he inflicted massive casualties on them. With RECRUITS! He had to make to a choice. I kinda feel like if his numbers were up more, he would’ve done far more significant damage.

"The napoleonic wars were fueled by Napoleon's military might and ambitions to seize control and dominate Europe" Altough, Napoleon was pretty happy about dictating to other monarchies, taking and giving as he saw fit, lets not forget, that most of the Napoleonic wars wasnt started by Napoleon. The wars didn't happen because napoleon wanted to conquer europe, but becasue the coalition didnt want a strong france as a dominant power, so they kept declaring war against him. He thought, if he replaced the hated spanish king, it would be better for the people of spain, alliance with spain would be soldified, and last but not least, his position would be also stronger. As with russia, he needed to save face for himself and france, but also dont forget about the russian ultimatum to france to call back all french soldiers from prussia and poland after france and prussia signed an alliance. Napoleon wanted to be allies with prussia and russia to make britain realise that continuing the war is futile and unnecessary, but Alexander almost immediately seek to quit this alliance as fast as possible. Napoleon enjoyed being the dominant power, as most people probably would, but the monarchies at the time definetly would have liked to be that strong. If anyone was warmongering, it was britain, because he paid and supplied all coalitions, and just couldnt agree to a peace. Napoleon gets all the blame, but what he should have done? Just let other countries defeat france and restore a monarchy their OWN PEOPLE get rid of? He fought for france, brilliantly until he eventually made some blunders, but he was hardly an aggressor.

At this point in time, Spain was already lost and the duke of Wellington was ready to cross the border into southern France. So at this point, it was basicly over for Napoleon, the only one who was to delusional to realize it, was the man himself.

Presentations such as this are pointless. We got no overview of how the battle progressed and the immaculately and uniformly dressed troops on all sides did not represent the reality of the times. To have ANY value, these presentations need a map on screen at all times showing where the actions portrayed take place.

@@cinematicbattles559 Thanks for the quick reply. The problem, for me, is that the visual aspect isn't really up to scratch either, for some of the reasons given above. Any tactical military presentation without maps, be it visual, as here, or in books, has no real value until matched against a map. Can you not build a map onto one corner of the presentation highlighting where the scene portrayed is taking place?
