Our Napoleonic Nation deep dives continue this time with Spain! The minis here aren't mine, I don't own any (yet!) instead they are Front Rank and Eagle Miniatures.
Please subscribe if you can! It really helps, and likes help too!
Thanks for supporting the channel, see you soon!

"Like a peasant who'd found a bag of money " - brilliant! Back in the day I had a 25mm Spanish army based on the Baylen OOB. They never won anything without a British contingent to give them backbone, but I loved them and their beautiful uniforms.

I'd love a video about the Portuguese. Particularly about their colonial troops. The Napoleonic Wars were also a world war (like the 7 years wars) and normally one only sees stuff about the Peninsular Campaign. But there were combined actions of Portuguese and British units elsewhere too, like the taking of Cayenne. Cheers!

The basis for most of Spanish wealth @1550-1820 was the enormous silver mine in Potosi, now in Bolivia. The silver from Potosi was the bulk of what the Spanish treasure fleets carried. The Spanish empire can be said to have lived and died by the Potosi silver. The mine was playing out by the early 1800's, and the failure of the stream of silver, besides the disruptions of the Napoleonic wars.

Gadzooks! You've given me more information in this video than all the research I've been able to uncover here in Texas, a former Spanish colony. Pity I didn't have it before I built & sculpted, and painted 4 battalions of these boys. I know you don't like the idea of converting early French to the purpose but I've thrown in, more than half, of Perry's Spanish.and used as many of the bonnet de police as I could. Of those I couldn't I gave them the white edge around the bicorn so they don't stand out that much. Warlord sent me a newsletter touting a "soon to be released" notice of a plastic box of Spanish but nothings shown up yet on their (terribly clumsy) website yet but you might want to wait before investing the loot in Front Rank & or Eagle minis. Anyway, a really terrific installment and I literally can't wait for the episode on cavalry since I've already purchased several packs from Perry of these huge hatted yobs. Can you imagine trying to ride a horse, at speed or fighting with this bloody great sail on your head? No wonder they ran away instead!

I've been buy my Spanish army from front ranks, which i love the miniatures but they stuff up on two of my orders, so I'm not buying from them again. As for info on uniforms and the peninsular war In general, One of the best if not the best books, that you can get on the peninsular war is. The Peninsular War Atlas By Nick Lipscombe and for there uniforms Spanish Infantry of the Early Peninsular War : Uniforms, Organisation and Equipment of the Line and Militia By Gerald Cronin And some good wed sites. miniatureaddiction.info/1808-spanish/ www.littlewars.se/spanish/index.html

The French were willing to invade Portugal for a large period of time, before they entered the Peninsula. They wanted to punish Portugal so much, that Spain decided to relax their friends, invading their neighbor with a 200000 soldier army (1801). They did a fast visit, facing a Portuguese army, that was defeated. Godoy (the Favourite of the Queen, a soldier, and some kind of Prime Minister), said the only interesting thing here in Portugal are these oranges (and because of that, this "war" has been known since then as: The War of the Oranges). When the French invade Spain, they were not really invited to make the visit. That's why nobody in Spain liked their visit. And even the "Afrancesados" (those who thought that Spain had to become more like the French). Later, in 1823, another French army payed a visit to Spain, the 100000 Children of Saint Louis (Saint Louis of France was a Cousin of Saint Ferdinand of Castilla). Nobody decided that this French army was an enemy at all (only the Constitutionalists). They entered Spain to restore the Absolutist Monarchy, with the same king, the Constitutionalists took to Cádiz (where the Constitutionalists hoped they'll have British support). As no army faced the French, Absolutism was restored (The First Spanish Constitution, "La Pepa", 1812, was supposed to be accepted by the king as soon as he came to Spain, but he didn't. In 1820, a Spanish army, led by coronel Riego, decided not to travel to America, to fight the traitor independentists, but to make a coup, and make the King (btw, King Ferdinand VII, the Desired) swear the 1812 Constitution (1820-1823, the first Constitutional period in Spain). King Ferdinand died after years of a strong illness. As he had no sons, only girls, he decided to abolish the Salic Law (the Borbons stablished in Spain a Century earlier). Queen Isabel II, was a too young queen (3), when her father died. Her uncle, Prince Carlos, was unwilling to accept Isabel as queen, so he decided to declare himself as king. Here, the constitutionalists took part for Isabel, and this time, they won the war, the First of the Guerras Carlistas.

Unusual but enjoyable, are when going to have square just I've seen some ridiculous formations in the black powder rulebook showing ad Sudan british troops in enormous squares defending from hundreds of skirmishes. Is that a tactic couse it looks great but seems impractical. Btw a polish army basic would be cool

That is how they used to fight in the colonial era! It must have required a huge amount if training. I'm no expert in that period, but yeah it was basically a mobile fort with walls made up of men. The Four Feathers with Heath Ledger in it shows really well how it would have fought.

So I asked a friend of mine that has forgotten more about Prussians than I'll ever know. He says musketeers (line) would be in 3 ranks. Fusiliers (light infantry) would be in 2, with the third rank skirmishing. Similar to how I describe the Austrians in their line and grenadiers video
