At the height of his career, Narciso Yepes interprets Joaquin Rodrigo's masterpiece on his 10-string guitar. The conductor is Raphael Frübeck de Burgos with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Frankfurt.
Rodrigo:
What can I say about Narciso Yepes? What can I say about the guitarist to whom we owe the international success of the Concerto de Aranjuez? Yes, it was in Paris in 1947 where Ataulfo Argenta, Yepes and the Spanish National Orchestra met to illuminate my unique opus at a time when no one new its true future. From then on, the Concierto de Aranjuez took on a new nature, and it is for this same reason that I am grateful to Narciso Yepes for the fruit of an intense collaboration that has brought us to travel our musical trajectories side-by-side. I will not say that Yepes was the best nor the worst. He has simply been my guitarist par excellence. My guitarist.
Joaquin Rodrigo in « El Mundo » May 4, 1997 (in commemoration of the Maestro's passing)
Besides the fact that I love this music, this artist, this video is here for several reasons: I'm learning to play this music; Mr. Bonsillens has regrettably deactivated commentary on his version; and I really wanted to pass on the story of how this collaboration between the composer and the guitarist began :
After an honorable but lackluster start with guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza, this concerto was not played between 1940 and 1947. Then, Ataulfo Argenta introduced 19-year-old Narciso to Rodrigo who handed over the score, saying: "Take this, chiquito (young man), take this concerto. With this, you will go around the world" After hearing the fruit of three weeks of labour by the guitarist, Rodrigo embraced him, saying: "This will make us both famous"
Enjoy

My english teacher in high school used to talk about this song again and again. Back then, I wasn't able to get the deep emotional meaning of this song. Years later, I'm so thankful to him, to my dear teacher in Karabük. Hope you see this comment one day. I'm typing this in tears now. God bless you, god give you lifelong happiness. Can I so so very kindly beg for a little of what your teacher use to say.... I'm listening to this for years... n always in tears... How the journey begins, n how the transition takes place in the journey, n showing comes to the end... I cannot imagine the mind of the composer, how he has told an ENTIRE story thru this piece. How it brings the listener to a complete shift, suspended in space n time... forever. How divine is this.... Wud really live to hear ur story...

I was fortunate enough to attend to a Narciso Yepes concert along with "Cuarteto Latinoamericano de cuerdas" about 30 years ago. It took place in the wonderful Juárez theatre in Guanajuato city México. During the Festival Internacional Cervantino. I was most interested in the dancing events as I'm a dancer, and swear to dance in that theatre someday, wich i did. 30 years later i still remember the maestro performing an encore after another until he standed up, took his foot stool and leave. I still feel overwhelmed by his mastery and no other of the great guitarrist can bring the same feelings than him.... And learning to play the guitar after all these years ;) ;) What a piece of genius he was!!

thanks for sharing it with liners. this song is magic to me; the whole suite.it has a touching melody in the adagio but it is in the whole a great thing magical and when I saw it the first time here it was not with Narciso Yepes, but his playing is more outstanding than of the most others... excepted maybe the Concert with Paco de Lucia. I think it makes a big difference if it is played by a classical guitar player without flamenco influences or by a Spanish guitar player with these influences.

One of the most magnificent, poetic pieces of music ever composed. intensively thoughtful and passionate. and *then came forth my thoughts inspired by this music as follows...* ======================================================== *This music almost perfectly speaks of my life and what I have seen & observed & experienced:* i rambled and gambled and risked all for soul and the souls of all so sadly lost and crying and dying in the dark dark corridors and labyrinth of time bound to a world bleeding and pleading to be set free from the sly & sinister systems of Man and the enslavements of satan and his little minions who do his/its daily bidding. This is *not* my Home. nor His Kingdom. get that straight. i am *against* this world and all its silly pretense and lies, - ludicrous lies of fake dreams, income-outgo, and endless revolving expenses bleeding dry the spirit and soul of men & women. This world, - understand: this world began with A LIE.* It will end with TRUTHe and Judgment and (finally) true newness & renewal of Life & Joy & Peace with GOD and others. Please tell me: WHAT ELSE dare we Hope for and strive for ? He Promised. and i will not let loose of His Word or Trust. i tell you now plainly and surely: all else sinks lower & lower into infinite darkness, - cold and damp, - dead as The Lie* that birthed it all. Look to The Light of His Promise ! for He Is The Lord of Love & Light... worship thou Him.* * See: Psalm 45:6-11, + 17; 46:1-7. ============================ * Worship is the supreme expression of honor and praise and love and adoration OWED and acknowledged to The Supreme Being and Creator Who Is The Benefactor of all. ============================================ and a vitally important explanation: ============================ *The MASSIVE LIE that birthed evil and chaos in both the heavens and the earth is THIS:* "you can be your OWN god making your OWN rules deciding what is good & evil, - right & wrong without honoring and obeying YahOvah - Father-GOD and His Rules and *HIS* Moral Authority." in other words: *the deification of the human and angelic will/spirit.* ie/ "do what *thou* wilt shall be the whole of the law." - *this* is the seductive and sinister LIE that sent the entire world and the human race spiraling foolishly & fatally in all different (and wrongful) directions: spiraling, I say, into endless conflicts, war, miseries, and outer darkness. *Do you not see ? do you not understand ?* ... TRUE freedom is to enjoy GOD's Creation and Life *within* the sane and righteous boundaries of His Moral Laws and Commandments governing ALL relationships. Torah. Instruction. Precepts. Principles. Values that bless you and others simply by honoring Yah O vah-G-ah-d and His Wise & Righteous Rules. =========================== This is all something so simple AND PROFOUND that even a child can grasp its sense and meaning. Therefore, *CHOOSE YE THIS DAY Wwhom you will serve, honor, and obey.* your soul and destiny depends upon it. ===============================

Rodrigo: What can I say about Narciso Yepes? What can I say about the guitarist to whom we owe the international success of the Concerto de Aranjuez? Yes, it was in Paris in 1947 where Ataulfo Argenta, Yepes and the Spanish National Orchestra met to illuminate my unique opus at a time when no one knew its true future. From then on, the Concierto de Aranjuez took on a new nature, and it is for this same reason that I am grateful to Narciso Yepes for the fruit of an intense collaboration

Bendiciones, chulada!

4 people should have their hearing checked. The guitar stands crystal clear and strong beside the orchestra. Immense opus and interpretation!
