Barry Seal didn't "refuse government protection". He was sentenced to serve time in a halfway house. He said during the sentencing that it was still the equivalent of a death sentence. Barry Seal refusing federal protection isn’t what killed him. The judge that sentenced him revealed his exact location to the public, allowing him to be killed by Pablo’s men. He also ordered Seal unable to carry a gun or hire bodyguards, which made Seal an easy target. Even Seals own defense attorney said it was tantamount to a death sentence. Yes, Barry Seal refused federal protection, but that wasn’t ultimately what killed him. This judge, who abused the system he was meant to serve, did.
