Here's I little trick to remove low-end that I found out by myself (not saying I invented it though, but I didn't learn it from a tutorial or whatever. I learned it by experimenting). In FL Studio you can easily press 'reverse polarity' on any sample you use (also kick samples etc.). Basically it flips the wave form horizontally (at this point you won't hear any difference though). So now, if you stack it with the exact same sample at the exact same time and volume (without reversing the polarity of the stacked sample) and play it all together, you'll hear nothing at all (since the wave forms cancel each other out). Just complete silence. So knowing this, I picked a sample and I changed the bitrate of it to 800 or so (this completely removes all high end data from the sample. The lower the bitrate, the more mid/high end is removed). It doesn't "filter" or "mask" the high end, it simply doesn't copy any of the mid/high end data. So now you're left with a sample that only contains low-end. Now stack that with the original sample. If you play them both together, you'll hear the sample playing with the added bass. But if you reverse the polarity of one of the two, the low-end frequencies of both samples cancel each other out. This leaves you with a sample that doesn't contain any low-end frequencies.

@@maurtislonel8306 yoyooo, I finally got to studying this last week, and I have to say it is incredible. It has unlock so many new ideas and solved so many roadblocks I was having breaking down some beats. Truly an amazing technique! But even though I am successfully down sampling and removing the high end, I cannot do that last step you mention. Stacking the sample that had it's high end removed with a regular sample does boost the bass, but whenever I reverse polarity I don't get the removal of the low end. Maybe I need a plugin to do this? Because reversing on Fl might not work, if it has to be done at the end of the process... Or I am doing something wrong, but yee I can't remove the low end :(

Sooo many ways to flip bass on beats. Been at it on an MPC since '97 and the only way I can tell you how I do it is: I just do it based on how it feels. Looped, chopped, filtered and played out, it just varies depending on the flow of the beat at the time. This is definitely a great video for an understanding of some methods.

re: your comment about sampling resources: I've been into beat making for years, but I've only really started to get better recently. I'm far from an expert, but in my eyes, the best resources are old forum posts. there's some really great insight you can get into exactly how 90s producers made their beats, which has helped me get a lot closer to the sound i want. also, trial and error. once i started making a beat everyday, i got better. you kinda have to see what works and get a feel for it. great video, btw. subscribed.

Check the nujabes secret technique video. It goes over playing the sample on a syncopated rhythm It is useful when you want to play something slow, faster, without warping the sample / changing the vibe. What about Micro Chopping? Heard all through J Dilla Donuts? Honestly donuts is peak Dilla.
@Narokx
@Narokx 2 жыл бұрын
true true Micro Chopping is more rhythmic, so that and chops linked to the snare and kick, were not included. The video tried to cover more bass centric techniques. I could squeeze those techniques in but the video was already long enough! Maybe I can cover those in future videos, after I do some breakdowns that focus on those techniques!

Im confused; you say cut out the low end, but in the EQ, you cut out the high end? Am i missing something?
@Narokx
@Narokx 2 жыл бұрын
I think you are confusing filtering names. A low pass filter cuts the high end because it let's the low end pass through the filter, thus filtering out the high end. And the opposite for High pass filter

@@Narokx yes yes, but in the EQ you increased the luf value, and made a low pass filter. Or do i have everything backwards?

For low end it is really hard to learn about it without some proper headsets or even a shitty headphone with bass boosters

first technique you got it wrong. it’s the old mpc’s filters + resonance that make it sound like that. you don’t need to add any bass.
@Narokx
@Narokx 2 жыл бұрын
I mean you are both right and wrong There is 1000% added bass on those beats. The groove and sound are completely different. But you are also right, which is super interesting and something I do not do enough. Imma use resonance to see if I get a boost in bass that sounds good. I've done something similar a lot, but not exactly like that. I think it is brilliant and should work, I think you just gave me a video idea :)

@@Narokx yeah no offense but I wasn't that impressed with the video.You don't know the power of hpf resonance to masively boost low end, and also using old school professional eq's to boost/cut and sculpt your sample, and even compression. Listen to the samples from Low End Theory and hear the huge difference once recorded.
