@Lrbearclaw4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsorensen7567 Because "role-play". When I tried my hand at DMing, I told my players that every character choice they made needs to have an In Character reason/explanation. Meaning, every Feat needs to have an explanation for it. 'Magic Initiate' lets you take spell from other classes, but you still have to get the power from somewhere. Warlock powers come from a Patron, Sorcerer from their blood, Cleric from the Divine, and Wizard from the tome. If you cannot come up for an IC reason for EVERY character building choice, then you don't have a character, you have a block of numbers. If you explain it all, then you enhance the RP for everyone and make a character who is all the more richer.

@@Lrbearclaw "I run my table this way so everyone else must necessarily also run their table this way" Honestly we don't have enough info to judge either way and the only reason I'm continuing this conversation is your adamant insistence that it *must* be magic initiate instead of multiclass. All the roleplay elements that justify "you have to get your magic initiate magic from somewhere" also justify "small dip into warlock multiclass", so without further information, like whether they even started campaign at level 1 (many like to start at 3+ so as to already have subclasses and not accidentally get one shot killed by a common housecat) we can't really say definitively.

I know right, someone’s got to be competent in midst of the ultra impulsive chaotic characters. I am currently playing a celestial patron pact of the tome warlock who is basically a medical student, he’s warm and really cares about the parties wellbeing, being essentially a doctor and all, but he is not stupid or impulsive he is actually rather calculating and strategic. He has prevented the party from doing tons of rather stupid stuff but I also think that my parties impulsivity really helps him actually get stuff done and prevent him from overthinking situations. I as a player usually play side character roles since I’m not the best at role playing but this character (being the only charismatic character with intelligence to back it up in the party) has forced me out of my comfort zone as they kinda just look to me as leader of the party. It’s still weird for me but rather interesting because I’m also the party healer and utility spellcaster (tons of cantrips nuff said) which is a rather rare set of traits for a character to have in part dynamics.

Actually, she worked for the US's Office of Strategic Services, basically the CIA _before_ the CIA. (She was _too tall_ to join the Women's Army Auxillary Corps or the Navy's Women's Reserve.) She definitely had at least a bit of what you might call "spy training"; she kept an emergency signal mirror in her kitchen junk drawer for the rest of her life, and she worked in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and China cataloging and passing top-secret messages, but her most famous work was as a research assistant back home in DC, as part of the OSS' Emergency Rescue Equipment Station. They had her devise a _shark repellant_ to keep curious sharks from detonating Allied mines prematurely. That was actually her first time cooking. Her recipe is still used today, or so I've heard. Her full personnel file (as "McWilliams, Julia C.") can be found online, if you're interested.

One of my favorite characters ever was a female dwarven bard who had been raised on the surface by humans. Her performance skills were clay jug and rambling oration (think Grandpa Simpson ramblings). She had a love of cooking and adopting anything the party didn't end up killing in battle, taking great care to keep them fed, clean and pretty by braiding ribbons into their hair. Eventually she got her hands on a rod of wonder (and then a greater rod of wonder). She decided to tie a ribbon to then end and started to learn how to ribbon dance. The party was full of OP extremely effective combat characters, so she became the comic relief, eventually turning herself several sizes, colors and genders through the rod's powers. She ended up also turning into two different kinds of dragons and being reincarnated as a unicorn at one point. Man, I miss that game!

I created an artifact for my world: Goblins Bane. It’s the shovel Farmer Brown used to defend his home from goblins. It’s a +3 weapon, that does 1d4 bludgeoning damage (unless you have an intelligence score of 14 or higher, then you rotate it and it does 1d6 slashing damage). It is a sentient magic weapon, and if you are in the presence of goblins and are holding Goblins Bane, you must make a DC 30 Wisdom Saving throw, or be possessed. While possessed you basically become a 20th level berserker barbarian, in a frenzied reckless rage, and remain in that state so long as there are goblins that are still alive that you can see. When you come out of the possession, you take 1 level of exhaustion. There are a couple more benefits if you are using it exclusively as your weapon, but that’s the gist of it.

Played a character that was a sell-sword, fighter. He was a high/low that was a difficult one to run because he couldn't use magic, in so far as spells and magics that effected him (potions) so need to eat and sleep to recover HP. The trade off was he could use magic items (wands, cloaks, etc, with scrolls being if-y,) The trade off was a special ability gained through the primary weapon used, it would suck Hp off those killed with one hit, and add it to his hp count. The weapon was a sword that was as lethal to victims and could, unless used precaution against, be just as lethal to the user. It gained 'power' for every one hit kill it made which after four one hit-kills in a single encounter wold add a die to it's to hit and add a die to damage, so you could, in a large encounter of low level (kobold swarm), start throwing handfuls of dice at a time. Anyway, he spoke primarily bestial as a language, but also had common. No one else in the party spoke bestial and for nearly the entire run that he was with the party he only spoke bestial to them and required an interpreter if they wanted to talk. Otherwise it was all hand signals and body language, that was until the group was captured. He'd entered the party as a hire early on and stayed for a whopping sum of 100gp a week, for that they got an excellent tanker killer. So now we're captured and before a queen/empress and he steps forward and speaks in perfect common "I'm not with this group, I'm only a contractor and they have a contract with me that is finished in the morning for they have not yet paid me for this week. I'm telling the truth because I have this.' and pulls out a ring of truth (area effective 10ft) 'I was hired and they have paid me to be with them.' They're surprised and saying he's a liar etc.. to which he looks at them and them her and says. 'I'm sure they said I only spoke beast as well.' He hands the ring to her artificer to check and steps back, out of the effect range so when he goes back in, wold need to make a roll against the effect. Because up till then he never told a lie, he just didn't speak in a language they (the rest of the party) could understand when they asked if he knew any other languages. Anyway, he barely beats the dc (it was at disadvantage) but the best part, was he can now lie even while holding the ring. Since the head honcho saw clearly he was telling the truth up front, and had her own people make sure that the ring he had was in fact a ring of truth, she believed everything he said. Lies poured forth and he was given freedom to walk around, and ended up killing their guard general, the only actual magic user in the room by paralyzing him in checking out his most used weapon, which was a bad one. That in order to gain all the benefits it offered, you needed to beat the weapon's dc on just touching it. Which was a 17. If you failed you took 3d20+d10 damage and if any of them rolled higher than the dc, you were paralyzed and couldn't move or drop the sword or make a sound. You were just frozen in place soaking in damage. Next round it would repeat until you beat the dc, though you had to do it at disadvantage each time. Otherwise it was 3d20+d10 psychic each round of touching the sword until you either beat it, or died. Their magic user never beat it. My character bypassed that by wearing psychic blockers, so he never got the advantage the sword offered which was a mental clarity of +8 to any roll save for psychic attack, with two successful saves gave you immunity for the day as long as you were holding the sword. If you let go or slept, you lost the advantage and had to re-roll against it's dc, etc. In the end when asked, after the party realized the entire time they'd been badmouthing and insulting him and he understood every word, they demanded to know why he never spoke in a way they could understand. His answer was 'Because if I did before then, it wouldn't have been so funny to see the looks on your faces.' He was chaotic neutral but not an asshole wanna be evil. He just saw it as a fantastic joke that got better day by day until the punchline was ripe to be dropped. They stopped paying him and he departed way, laughing into the sunset.

He was very noisy, obsessed with Mexican culture but never once dropped the mascarade. Though it exasperated the other characters quite a bit. The players enjoyed him, though. He was a very flawed character in campaign of perfect vampires. He was a gust of fresh air. It was very fun to play.

I had an idea for a conjurer back in 3.0 I wanted to play buy never got to. She was called Granny Summons. She was an elf, a very old elf, who had seen so much over her lifespan that nothing surprised her. She was going to be a quick-witted, iron-willed high-society lady who could have a devil over for tea and negotiate favorable terms, but also was very sweet to her friends and would give kindly life advise. This story reminded me of her. Tough old ladies rock!

I am currently playing an elderly gnome woman who is a cook (by profession), she also has a thick italian accent and mostly goes by Nonna with her party. I love playing someone older it gives the group a very intersting dynamic and the choices you make as someone late in life are different than someone young with their whole lives ahead of them.

Never underestimate the power of Granny. Mine taught me patience and the importance of Education she also gave me some of the best advice I've ever had and helped me get my life straightened out long after she was already gone. Just by getting around to doing what she told me to.

OMG. I have a similar character as in the video. A sweet dwarven grandma who loves baking and helping others, whose name is also Gertrude. Except, rather than a warlock, she is a barbarian. XD I am known on my community discord as Grandma Rage.

I have played something out of the norm before, and it was also related to cookies! We used a homebrew for a homonculus as a base, but I had it tweaked into a little pixie theme. Then we used a homebrew class for cooking, cuisiner, and thus--the "Keebler Elf" was born. A sarcastic little fairy that healed people in battle with his little cookies. There was an obscene backstory about him leaving the other 'keebs', due to a sort of work station abuse. Minimum wage, extra hours with no pay -- that old dastard who ran the place may be cute, but he was a sick, demented fairy. The climax for the character was a heart wrenching and gruelling civil war between keeb kind.

Awesome story. I had some unique characters too. One of my characters was a modified bard that masqueraded as a mage... and he was a bit mixed up. His name was "Deja Vu" and he always seemed to have deja vu. He did offer insights and answers with "Oh, I think I did this before. Try (insert thing here). It worked last time." He had elfin chain mail under his robe and his quarterstaff was a concealed word... kind of like a modern umbrella sword or cane sword.

"She pretty much exclusively uses hex, eldritch blast, and some melee spell that does an additional D8 of damage" Sounds like a Paladin's divine smite to me, but that isn't possible, is it? ...oh

I once played an half-orc barbarian that was actually an extremely composed grammar teacher. He discovered he could rage after getting angry at his students, and during fights, out of habit, he often addressed enemies like they were kids, shouting things like: "You are the worst class I ever had!", "You all fail!", "You should have studied more!". Later, he would regret loosing his temper and confess his sins to the party's cleric (which didn't help at all because he had the war domain)

I currently play as Crazy Old Uncle Ned. A retired adventurer that treats the adventure in the form of a tourist. He's a warlock that after all this time has gone a little insane. He talks about impossible things from his past that no one believes. He's all around funny to watch and listen to. Think of him more as a hillbilly town coot.

I am currently in a 3.5 campaign. My characters name is Alexsie and is a level 1 variant battle sorcerer. I use a lot of scrolls and as part of my deception of being a wizard I have gotten the ok to place all my scrolls into a wizards book. Same rules apply for scrolls just thematically different. My actual familiar is a tiny viper i wear around my neck and have placed points into animal handling just to have a pet raven that people think is actually my familiar. Eventually I will prestige class into a candle caster, from tomb of magic, and then abjurant champion. She will be epic

When the group I joined started playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen, one of the other players created an old granny type character, who was a fighter (later took the Eldritch Knight subclass), and she made cookies. But, unlike the granny in this video, she was clearly mentally unstable. Also, one time she made pot cookies, and when we were infiltrating the Dragon cult’s camp, she fed her pot cookies to everyone she could, and before long most of the camp was high out of their minds, and we basically walked out of there with the prisoners just like that.

I love making oddball characters, but it's never quite been to this extent, where it's not a less used class or race, just pure awesome concept. Probably helps to have a group of RPers too, in place of folks itching for combat at every turn, you get to have a character concept that's more than just races and classes.
