I broke my left arm, three times thanks to military doctors. First time, they said I'd heal quick, and had me take off the cast a week earlier than recommended. The NEXT DAY, I rebroke the same break. He also told me to take it off a WEEK EARLIER than normal. Broke it again, except it was all the way through both bones this time, with some of it sticking out. Tried to set it, didn't work. So then put me under again and did pins and screws, but of course that didn't go well. The anesthesia wore off EARLY. I woke up just as they finished the stiches, but it was freshly cut open so I could clearly see through. Then they fucked it up even more during the cast phase, which basically made my scar massive. It's a cool story to tell, and understandably unbelievable when I'm wearing long sleeves. Coincidently, rolling up my sleeves to show the scar is rather convincing.

Hold up... the bone was sticking out of your arm. So you had a compound fracture. What do you mean, "they tried to set it?" They're not popping your shoulder blade back into place. It's a compound fracture. Also, then they put you under? I'm confused and genuinely horrified if this is true.

2002 my basic training FTX Ft. Lost in the woods winter. My battle buddy and I are supposed to prepare and man a fighting position. I'm a country boy, and my battle was from Vagas, so we agreed that I would work on the fighting position while he pulled security. Built it up with a top with a thick layer of dead leaves for insulation, keeping us warm and concealed. Entrance was a small crawl hole at the back. Made a large area of dead small sticks covered with dead leaves around the back entrance. We took turns one awake one asleep. Whenever we heard twigs snapping behind us, the one awake would tap the foot of the sleeper with their foot. After days of marching with gear, your feet are pretty tender. A light tap will definitely wake you up. Basically non verbal communication of "Danger close." Whenever we had to man fighting positions, my battle and I got warm naps. Work smarter, not harder.

To be fair, a good majority of what the ER (or A&E for UK folks) knows, they learned from battlefield medics - especially when it comes to traumatic injuries and rapid blood loss. And that tradition continues right up to now, with new techniques and equipment being developed all the time for saving soldiers lives that then go on to be adopted and adapted for civilians. It would be a beautiful thing if it weren't for the whole, you know, war and soldiers getting injured and dying parts.
