A thought I had was maybe he didn’t want his mom to smoke so if he ever came forward about his bullying, people could not make the excuse that he got the cigarette burns from parental abuse rather the bullying. Because technically it is illegal for underage people to have cigarettes and some school officials might push the blame on the mom to save face for the school since technically it is more believable that she has cigarettes.
