We take a look at the drained Grand union canal, grounded Narrowboat and an outboard engine on the canal bed at Buckby Locks.
The Buckby locks just up from Whilton marina are closed for maintenance and we take a quick look.

Btw, a polarized filter for the camera could make it really easy to cut the reflection out!

Normally there Tie something to it and pull it out with a canal boat crane 🏗 when the waters back in , instead of trying to drag it out of a empty canal.

That retaining wall you show at 6:42, and earlier, is seriously in danger of collapsing into the canal; the brickwork at the base is missing! Urgent, I would have thought?

The caretakers of the system don’t like to spend money on repairs . Preventive maintenance is a term not known to CRT. They would rather wait till things turn into a disaster then get the public to donate money to fix it.

If you use a polarising filter on your camera you should be able to deal with the reflections. A circular polariser does not interfere with the autofocus, however a lens barrel that rotates as it focuses will of course rotate the filter unless you hold it - usually they have a free-rotating front to account for this.

Interesting to see how limited the works are considering the state of the rest of that pound. The freshwater mussels are probably Swan (longer with dorsal bump)or Duçk (more rounded and flatter)mussels.

I suspect that the "sand bags" are filled with graded hardcore and cement. The sandbags fit together closely when dry and when wetted will form a solid wall. . It would be good to see if my assessment is correct from someone at the scene.

Much used in cowls for culverts, etc, they become super close fitting 'stones' - v clever.

the canals need a dredger that scoops up the crap on a conveyer throws it clear where it can be removed and puts the canal deep all the way across so boats dont get stuck...?.

IMHO . . . This video should be sent in to the folks who do these "repairs". They should take the optimum opportunity to fix everything when the water is drained. No sense in not doing it all at the same time.

What a poor show from the CRT. The towpath is obviously being undermined by the flow of water through the canal wall, and without patching the wall (and filling the voids, ideally with chemical grout) they're going to continue to get worse with each passing boat. Much the same neglect has been responsible for the voids and collapses at Watford Locks, just up the way, and a similar thread-bare response is going on there. I can only hope that a more serious approach to keeping the canals in good order comes before the next serious breach.
