@john47jones me for one. I remember that storm, the same week that I rescued a mobile phone from the bottom of a new bit of canal. Nice flat bottom with no accumulation of silt and random load stones to contend with. Felt it with my bare feet and even picked it up with my foot. Would have put my head under or swam down if it came to it - as i did for another person's pair of glasses a week or two later!

First thing to do with any electrical item that gets wet is to take the battery off. Current flowing though water is what causes corrosion and eventually destroys it. Take the battery off then you can run it under the tap, dry it off and it'll be perfectly fine. Tie some cork balls to it for next time it takes a swim!

It’s all dried out but the battery is knackered … luckily I have spares 😃🏴‍☠️ it’s usually on a magnetic tripod with a magnet mount and I stick it to the side of the boat and everything but I knocked it off in stress 😂😂

You need a landing net. A long time boater friend told me to get a fishing landing net "your bound to lose something to the cut". Am I glad I did, as within a week I dropped my phone in the drink, on the third sweep I got it and it saves you having to dive in. The one I got off Amazon for £15 was "Fishing Landing Net, Xndryan 180CM Telescopic Fishing Net Pole for Carp Trout Fishing, Stainless Steel Folding Landing Nets, Long Handle Fishing Nets for Ponds". It came in handy for fishing out other people's sun glasses, keys and a rudder handle pin.. 😎

Another great episode Heidi. When I rented our Narrow boat, way back in 2008, I as skipper was instructed to lift the prop shaft hatch, EVERY evening when we'd switched off, and check and remove all weed/grass from the shaft. For the week I had it there were no problems. It's called preventative maintenance. However accidental jamming can happen. I also when I was a saltwater liveaboard, had my keys for my yacht attached to a float buoy. Also camera. No cell phone cameras back then. Glad your camera works ok. If you put the camera in a bowl of rice, this is supposed to "draw" the wet out of it. You should always remove the battery, as quickly as possible if a camera or phone goes overboard. What a day you had, nearly drowned, nearly starved (did not do the shopping) Engine seized and then in the back entrance, your wooden leg burnt down!! Keep smiling Heidi, you always give us something to smile about, and that this week, was seeing Bonney trotting along the towpath, with her by then nicely dried Mummy!! Be good,

Tip for the future. My old engine would bang something and stop dead. I quickly learned that a lump of wood, too big to break, had been hit by the prop and maybe jammed between the blades and the hull/weedhatch bottom. Sometimes nothing there as it had just floated off when the prop stopped. Just start the engine, as you eventually did and it would fire up and run normally as the obstruction had left the scene. OK. check in the hatch when possible but a 'sudden stop' is most likely a plank of wood or branch rather than debris like rope etc., Stuff round the prop or shaft will cause a rough running rather than 'dead stop'. Engine failure is also accompanied by rough running and smoke. Rarely a sudden stop. Something we all had to live with and part of the fun as is the resultant swim. OK in the sunshine but not when there is ice on the cut. Great trip. Good to learn the camera was OK. Keep on Rum running.

Thank you 😃 yes I’ve had a log wedged before and I had to saw it to get it out but often my engine stalls with rope, once with so much fishing wire 😞 I’ve had a child’s buggy - canvas, frame and wheels, a duvet and even a full length duffel coat 😂😂 it’s the joys of having a deep drafted boat with a huge prop 😂😂

When I used to go up the Llangollen the lock keeper would come and ask my draft because Max allowed was 1foot 10". I used to tell him mine was "only 30". His maths was never good! The prop was 26". Size matters.

Put the camera inside a bag of white rice if you have some. It takes 4 or 5 days of rest in a sealed bag, the rice usually does a nice job of absorbing moisture .

Hi Heidi, wow what an adventure you had this video glad you got your camera back. Yes people are a bit strange sometimes and say it’s only a GoPro but this is your livelihood or part of , glad you’re okay and little Bonny , Love and appreciate you both. I have two dogs here in Australia one is a kelpie, cross cattle dog and my other dog. She is a pure bred kelpie. I just love my little babies like you said some days you should’ve just stayed in bed on 17 September 2018. I had a major truck accident and lost my right leg above the knee, plus heaps of other things like back fusion with two titanium rods. Etc etc etc but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. The sky is so beautiful! You take such wonderful video. Oh man, some of those locks are horrid to work. It's always good of you to show the other "shitty" side of boating life, like dropping your camera in the water, shit. But you got it, yay!! And then the engine, yes check the transfer case, etc, but dang you got this all down. I really like that you show this stuff. It's important for all boaters, and especially for new boaters, to see these things and let them know they really do need to learn. You are spectacular, I mean that! Best narrowboat blog ever. You should relocate to the Bridgewater Canal, no locks on it.🎉 Ship Canal are all manned locks too! Lymm, Grappenhall, Stockton Heath, Moore and Daresbury are all nice. Good Morrisons Supermarket shopping in Stocking Feet too.😂 I lived near them all once.😂
