It should be remembered that despite you saying it lasted 200 years, it was dry and in a huge state of disrepair until the 1980's when it was rebuilt and rewatered.

Yes! Love to see the narrowboats back! Your last series with them, along with David's videos from 'Crusing the Cut', actually inspired me to book a weekend trip on one while visiting the UK a month ago. It was such a great time, a lovely and relaxing break to a fairly busy schedule I had and a great way to see the countryside. I went through the Foxton locks, which is the longest flight of staircase locks in the country, a staircase lock being one that doesn't have a basin between the locks. I'd love to do the Falkirk Wheel, maybe I need to plan another trip! I would recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in it.

You've been here on the canals long enough now to know that the correct name for the turning place is the WINDing hole, so called because in the days of horse drawn boats there was no motor to assist turning so they needed the wind to help blow the boat around, hence winding hole.

*2 QUESTIONS:* *1)* How did they pump the water back in 1810 when the lock was built? *2)* Why isn't there an 8 to 10 foot plank on board so that you can use it as a bridge from boat to land whenever you stop, thus freeing you from having to take painful leaps of faith?
@DownieLive4 ай бұрын
There is a plank onboard, we just didn’t use it, which as you saw was a silly decision.

@@DownieLive I know that you're just a guy from Canada, but golly gee, willikers...I like you anyhow! 😉😃 ===================== When the canal was built there was no reliable source of water for the 2 mile (3km) long summit pound, but there were several springs near the canal about a mile (1.6km) east of the summit. Unfortunately they were about 40 feet (12m) below it! Rennie diverted these springs into the canal pound below lock 60 (later known as 'Engine' pound) at Crofton and built a pumping station to lift water via a culvert and well from there into a feeder channel or leat to the summit pound above lock 62. Rennie designed the pumping station to house two steam engines, although initally only one was installed. This was a second-hand Boulton and Watt obtained from the West India Dock Company. It had a wooden beam and a 36-inch (0.914m) diameter cylinder. *Source:* I. A. Recordings

Your right In saying it's the steepest but it's not the longest lock flight of locks in the UK. The longest is actually Neptune's staircase which is a true flight of locks as the locks share the top and bottom gates with the next lock rather than having a adjoining pound of water between the locks.

4:48 - when we did the Erie canal there were ropes down the side of the lock that you hung onto to help pull your boat/fenders against the wall. However, those locks all had lockkeepers - we didn't have to do the gates and the water ourselves.
