n the light novel he is shown to be slightly superior in their sparring sessions, however he is also around 3-4 years older. The story demanded him to be stronger at one point, so Itachi has someone to look up to, learn from and strive to become as good or even better.

@Aightdude Yes he was in their 1 vs 1 encounters. Shisui won nearly twice as much. Most likely due to his age, as it is mentioned several times, that Itachi and Shisui are on par in terms of talent. Danzo went as far as describing Itachi as a Shinobi, that can only be seen every 100 hundred years and the most giftet Shinobi to ever go to the academy (including probably Kid Minato). So while Shisui was stronger during his lifetime, Itachi most likely surpassed him at some point despite his Illness Also Shisuis Susanno is game only - so non canon, even though he most likely did have it

It’s your opinion but the author (especially in the Novels) heavily indicates, that both a near equal in talent, which is reasonable for the plot. Shisui served the plot as Itachis mentor, friend and role model, from whom he can take over morals and ideals in order to convince the audience of Itachi‘s good intentions and make him joining Akatsuki more reasonable.
