And variety in one's arsenal is shown be powerful. Some possibilities never used are: Naruto could redirect the trajectory of his body or projectiles mid-air using wind release. He could combine Toad art genjutsu and wind release to spread the genjutsu. He could use the cutting property of wind release to inject Sage Chakra into people; turning them to stone. Even Substitution jutsu is so powerful that Kishimoto mostly buried it in Shippuden. And wood release would be thematically appropriate for Naruto to use (especially since he was Hashirama cells in his arm).

I think another facet is just how bland his 2 jutsu's are. Unlike sand and ect. that other characters have, Rasengan and clones are extremely straightforward and limited. Gaara's sand became a coffin, a shield, a suit of armor, a tsunami, a platform, a sealing pyramid, a drone you can stand on, a cushion, ect. and can be freely manipulated. Rasengan is always just "ball that hurts if it touches you". I don't think saying that's similar is fair lol.

tbh i think clone jutsu could have a lot more potential if you used it in less literal ways,like for example clone weapons to become tenten 2.0,have him clone poisons or toxic gas to intoxicate entire battlefields,copy another person to replicate their physical habilities and uno reverse them in taijutsu,clone his summons to have like 11 gamabuntas,and those are only a couple i came up with in like less than 10 minutes lol

I would personally fix Naruto's power progression is in two ways: 1. Have the two year time skip consist of Jiraiya teaching Naruto Senjutsu. Maybe not Sage Mode, but definitely have him learning the fundamentals of taking in Nature chakra, as Naruto's main tactic is to stockpile as much chakra as possible into making giant super attacks. 2. Have Naruto learn sealing techniques! His entire clan's schtick is that they're master sealers, and it would've been cool for Naruto to have an arsenal of seals to counter Sasuke's massive arsenal of Ninjutsu. I feel like this would've helped a lot with diverisifying Naruto's battle tactics, and it would've given him and Sasuke a great way of countering each other. Sasuke being a master of Genjutsu and Ninjutsu with Naruto being a master of Taijutsu and Senjutsu. Their fights would consist of Naruto countering Sasuke's illusions with nature chakra and Sasuke would try and counter Naruto's various seals with a diversity of different techniques. And while we're at it, we could also put more of an emphasis on Sakura's chakra control, making her immune to Sasuke's Genjutsus, which could add something to her and Sasuke's confrontations.

Uzumaki chakra reserves is nice but the 9 tails was literally a nerf on his control of chakra for a long time, he had “zero talent” but still persevered enough to believe in himself despite him sucking and everyone telling him he sucked. Already there most people would have given up. It’s not like character strong because plot amps it’s Naruto becomes strong and gets amps from the plot because his character did the work and made the choices to deserve them

When Naruto was limited to just the Shadow Clones, it forced Kishimoto to be creative with it, kind of like when Sakura used Substitution Jutsu creatively in the Forest of Death, but then when he gets the Rasengan, he never really does anything creative except for the Pain fight, he just spams nukesengans.

Naruto was more creative with using both kage bunshin and transformation techniques... Sakura was a disappointment pre time skip. She wasn't even creative in the forest of death all she did was spam substitution jutsu a bunch of times then didn't use it to catch them of guard then didn't do anything of note. At least Naruto's use of transformation jutsus were genius like when they tricked zabuza to free kakashi or when he beat kiba aside from the fart was the transformation to akamaru was great. One thing that always bothered me compared with other shounen protagonists was that Naruto is on a power system where he can have dozens of different abilities, so he learning more cool techinics looks more like a much cooler path than just improving and using his tecnics in more creative ways than what he already has. I mean, Luffy and Ichigo just doing better versions of their powers that they are using for most of their shows looks more rewarding because Luffy can't just start to turn into magma, create strings or transform into a massive elemental dragon, and Ichigo can't turn his blade into a thousand tiny ones, create an inferno of flames or just summon a balistic missil, but Naruto can do thousands of different things that don't need clones or rasengan variations but stick to the old ways.

@@jeffreywright9165 Rokushiki doesn't matter in this point of the story, and he can basically do 4 of the 6 technics on his own, but yeah Luffy can laern other fighting styles like Life Return, Black Leg, Fishman Karate, the Kano Kingdom fight style, as well as start to use weapons. And yes, Ichigo can learn Kido. But that isn't nearly as versatyle as all the non-rasengan jutsus that Naruto could learn using Wind, Earth, Water, Fire, Magnetism, Magma, Steam and Wood Styles that Naruto canonically has, as well as the soap powers from the 6 tales and the ink powers of the 8 tales. And he can also learn sealing jutsus, the byakugou, any non sharingan genjutsu, fying raijin, puppets, Jiraya's frog related jutsus, 8 gates, Sai's jutsus... and there is thousands of combinations that he could pull off that would be cooller and more versatile than Ichigo using some Kido or Luffy fighting in a different manner

Naruto's main use of clones are to overwhelm or aid in setting up an attack. Kimimaro had Shikotsumyaku which he utilized the moment he was nearly overwhelmed by the clones. (See chapter 205) Jigen: Shrinking, flight speed. Jutsu absorption. (Boruto Chapter 37: Flight and shrinking allowed Jigen to defend against multiple clones, despite that, gave Sasuke enough time to figure out he was shrinking things) Isshiki: what jigen had but on a higher scale. (Boruto Chapter 50: clones set up Sasuke for an attack that Isshiki had to use his shrinking in order to break) Mentioning Kakashi during a sparing test is stupid as none of them were going 100% (Naruto Chapter 246 Naruto clones allows him to counter Kakashi's clone) They even assisted him against Kaguya to buy time and prevent her from outright rushing Naruto and killing him. Not mention tricking her and zetsu (Chapter 684 and 685) Shadow clones have worked in his favor substantially more than they haven't. The only time they'd be an objectively bad idea is if his opponent started mass absorbing his clones. In short, his chakra levels and forms in combination with Rasengan and shadow clones can do the job 90% of the time.

Honestly I find it funny as hell that Luffy is the most diverse fighter of the Big Three protagonists. You would think the ninja or soul reaper would be more technical fighters than a pirate. I think it’s a major reason why so many people prefer Sasuke and his fights over Naruto. It’s much more engaging to wonder how a character is going to win a fight vs knowing the character is strong enough to win but that they just need to land one hit with their strongest ability.

But he had lazy teachers, Kakashi of the Sharingan didnt give him(neither to Sakura) any jutsu or fighting style. And while he did learn a lot with Jiraiya, again after 2/3 years with him he doesnt learn any new jutstu.

I rather disagree with comparing the Rasengan to the other character's skillsets. While Gaara, Kankuro and Shikamaru's entire movesets all revolve around a single "theme" they utilize it in various ways that make them far more versatile, The sand doesn't just move, it can be used in various ways of attacking, it can create a coffin, it can create a shield, it can wrap his body, shuriken etc... Puppet manipulation can vary with different puppets, and shadows can do many things and attack in different ways. Shino's bugs are... well they aren't really a single jutsu as much as they are his...tools I guess? Similar to that Gentle fist isn't a jutsu, it is a fighting style, the eight trigram X palms is the "jutsu" and while the different amount of palms being different jutsu can be compared to the Rasengan, the gentle fist has more jutsus in it Where as all the Rasengan do the same act the same and look the same

Shadow clones don't always fail. They're usually used to line up attacks. All Naruto needs is the ability to hit you with the strongest attack he has. What the fuck is mudwall or katon gonna do for him? When he can throw a giant ball of destruction with minimum hand-signs or send 1000s of himself to beat you to death.

For me, the biggest problem with Naruto being so focused on Rasengan is that he has so much more potential to learn many jutsus Rasengan still can be his strongest Jutsu, but that would make fights better and compared to some other Anime MC Like Luffy, he only had his Devil Fruit and Raw strength but still was able to pull out powerful attacks until he learned Haki it makes sense that he only uses his Devil Fruit since he doesn't have that many options, but Naruto could learn so many Jutsus but instead only uses Shadow Clones and Rasengans which is disappointing

@@haro6025 it's the preparation and effect that makes the difference. For example, a barrage of punches thrown at a single target is Gatling. When Luffy throws his fist far from his back and pulls it to punch his target in front is a pistol. You can't just call each of them as kicks and punches.

Luffy only has the ability to be made of rubber for much of the series and yet he ends up doing so much with it Sure, in the end all his attacks are physical but that doesn’t mean they don’t have variation. Take gear third for instance, it is still just a punch but it is created via using his power in an unexpected way, biting into himself to inflate his very bones and create a massive fist. This is generally how all Luffy’s techniques work, they are a creative use of his ability that changes it up just enough to give it a different application. His power system is much more limited than jutsus and yet he makes a variety of different techniques with it, I mean dude invents his own install by using his legs as pumps to increase his blood flow in the same arc he gets his giant death fist Meanwhile Naruto goes from wind orb to spinnier wind orb to wind orb (now not wind addition) when wind style as a whole adds in a lot more potential for techniques than Luffy’s Gomu Gomu No Mi

What I appreciated and is overlooked is the filler arc after he learns rasenshuriken. He literally complains to Jiraiya that it isn’t enough and he needs to learn more jutsu - hence jiraiya teaches him wind style toad water pistol. What I find not very creative about Naruto is that you can theoretically achieve any purpose with Shadow Clone Jutsu but Naruto doesn't ever explore the ludicrously diverse possibilities. You can duplicate virtually ANYTHING with it. Weapons, tech, chemicals, you name them. Imagine spamming endless kunai coated with poisonous (may be nonlethal) substances propelled by Big Rasengans. This would make him much stronger in the midgame. Also, the lack of creativity with Shadow Clones especially rears its ugly head in Boruto where we see Naruto use a mere fraction of his arsenal against every single opponent. Imagine facing extinction-level opponents and not countering with a perfectly-coordinated army of KCM2SPSM Shadow Clones using Boil Release Unrivalled Strength and Frog Kata to launch virtually unevadable relativistic attacks. Now imagine if he did all that combined with duplicating TRUTH SEEKING ORBS with Shadow Clone Jutsu lol.

I think the main problem is with anime’s that have been running for so long ie.e. Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Attack on Titan and Dragon Ball and many others is that a lot of what made the characters good in the first place gets lost and I think the creators begin to run out of ideas. The characters are changed better or worse and the whole story changes. Like if you looked at Dragon Ball which was literally just marital arts and tournaments then go to Z and Super now they’re fighting aliens, demons and a lot of the characters that were relevant like Tien, Yamcha and others in Dragon Ball are pretty much made useless in Z where they are just cannon fodder to die while waiting for Goku and in Super you barely even see them let alone see them fight,It’s no wonder a lot of fans stop watching the anime because series tend to get ruined and characters get butchered.

You know, upon retrospect, it actually makes sense that Sakura had no special techniques or abilities outside of what was offered at the academy. Unlike the other genin in the show, Sakura does not come from an established ninja clan. She was just as normal villager who decided to enroll at the academy. There were no family techniques or skills that they could pass down to her, so of course she would only have what was offered in the academy for her jutsu.

Fun fact: Naruto was lucky Tendo regained his power, or else he would've died by his own jutsu. When Naruto tricked Gakido, he transformed his ORIGINAL self (this is further confirmed by Gakido) into Rasen Shuriken. If Tendo hadn't regained his powers, the Rasen Shuriken would've exploded and killed him.

I feel the problem is that each character had a "theme" like shikamaru used shadows, Choji got bigger, Gaara used sand, Rock lee and guys were melee fighter's, Ino messed with people's minds etc... But the 3 main characters didn't have a theme: asuke started off with fireball jutsu, and that set up for him to be a fire user... then the sharingan which set him up to also be an ilusionist/ power copy character... then he got the chidory which set him up for elemental theme with some illusions in... then the sharingan got so many buffs it was ridiculous. It wasn't that bad but if from the start a theme was set up it could've been better. Sakura started off with great energy control which set her up to be an ilusionist, which would justify her rivalry with Ino even more since they both would have similar skill sets, she also was really physically strong at the start of the series so she wou be able to handle herself if she needed to actually fight something or something wasn't affected by illusions... the Kishimoto realized the team needed a healer so she was pushed towards that position and forgotten that she was set up to be an illusionist since Sasuke stole that role but got elevated physical strengh to try to compensate. Did it work? No but at least it was something Naruto was set up to be a melee fighter that didn't have a lot of "magic" on his arsenal, the first episode/chapter is entirety focused on how he wasn't good with ninja techniques after all, so the author needed to get creative, his only techniques were the transformation and clones. Then he learned to summon frogs which are supposed to cover for his weaknesses and he not be useless in a long range battle or something he needed help with. then he learned the rasengan which set up him developing more "magic" control and actually get some "spells" but mainly remain a melee fighter... then the time skip happened and... nothing in the mean time and then he got the rasenshuriken which turned him into a long range fighter. Then he got the ability to make a 9 tail mecha then... well, it was a cluster of different abilities that had no relationship with the other, is he a melee fighter? A mech pilot? A long ranged fighter? A summoner? A what? Which ability should I give him next? See how none of them really have a theme and is incredibly difficulty to know how they will develop? That's a bad sign, it means the character's arsenal is non intuitive and difficult to add thigns to. Let's imagine Shikamaru was the protagonist, He would start with the shadow possession technique which in a fight is useless if you ain't smart or creative, then he could get his shadows to strangle people, it is still in the shadow and imobilization theme of the character and isn't a "I win" button, then it could've been expanded with his "magic dagger" that allows him to paralize people at a distance. This all happened in the show but let's expand upon it with a little more, he could've got something to manipulate people without having to move his body or get damage reflected at him. He could've gotten the ability to possess objects and act as a kind of limited telekinesis, his shadows could've been used to blind people's by instead of trying to strangle them go for the eyes and cover them. Etc. This "theming" of characters make it much easier to come up with abilities for them, this makes a character ability progression much MUCH more organic and intuitive but the main characters were not themed. That's why it feel so unbalanced, Sasuke took the role which sakura was supposed to be in and his role being a strategic fighter. Sakura was pushed out of being a illusionist because it would be redundant so she became the healer and Naruto has a bunch of throwaway abilities that are hard to keep track of so he only uses 2 and sometimes 3: clones and rasengan and SOMETIMES transformation, the rest of his arsenal are basically transformations DBZ style or variations of these 2-3 things.

The real problem is that Naruto isn't a one trick pony, it's that he stayed a one trick pony after training with Jiraiya. Sakura being a one trick pony is fine because she trained with a one trick pony. Sasuke clearly learned a great deal of various lightning and snake Justus under Orochimaru, but for some reason Naruto didn't learn anything else from Jiraiya. Jiraiya uses toad mouth trap, toad oil, toad flame bomb, needle hair attack, a reverse toad summon when he slips into the rain village and etc. He didn't think it prudent to give Naruto any of these moves?

I think the fundamental problem is that Kishi introduce Chakra and Jutsu as power system... Think about it, other battle shonens power system usually doesn't work like Chakra and Jutsu, they're usually only allow for a strict number of abilities. Nen in HxH only allow a user to create an ability in their own Hatsu category. Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach, MHA, Black Clover's power system are inherent, meaning the characters are born with it, there're some power in which any other characters can use and not strictly something you're born with like Barrier technique in JJK, Kido in Bleach, or the use of Mana in Black Clover, but generally speaking, these shonen series power systems are inherent and limited to the individual, they're akin to kekkei genkai in Naruto. But in Naruto, as others has pointed out, you can basically learn many - if not any - jutsu as long as you actually train (with Kekkei Genkai as an exception). Obviously things like nature transformation is something you're born with, but even after that, you can technically learn many different justu in a nature transformation. Like Sasuke has affinity towards Fire and Lightning, he doesn't need to just know and use fireball or chidori, he can learn other Fire and Lightning jutsus. Which brings us to mister Naruto himself. He has Wind as his nature affinity but choose to just use it on Rasengan when he can diversify his Wind type jutsu to many more, like Orochimaru's wind jutsu when he attacked team 7 in Forest of Death. He even became more broken in and after the war since the wiki said he can basically use many other nature transformation. Generally the mistake that Kishi made was definitely in the time skip. If Naruto's power system was like other shonens that I mentioned, there won't be any problem, sadly since Naruto's power system is what it is today, these problems arise rather easily.

Should Naruto learn more jutsus? Maybe. You mentioned before that other ninjas are basically focus on one jutsu and build around it. The problem is Naruto does not build a competent fight style around the Rasengan. I remember Pervy Sage criticizing Naruto when he first used the Rasengan. His main criticism is that it takes forever to build up and it highly telegraphed. Naruto never learned how to overcome the weakness Jiraya mentioned. Instead, he wastes chakra and spams Rasengans until one hits. This would be fine if using up all your chakra does not kill you! Naruto clearly has problem. The question remains on what to do to solve this problem. Learning new jutsu is a possible solution. Hinata and Neji were weak at range in part 1, but they learned the Eight Triagrams Vacuum Palm to patch up their weakness in part 2. Naruto could learn the Wild Lion's Mane to lock an opponent in place and reliably hit with the Rasengan. Alternatively, he could just wrap his hair around the opponents head so that they cannot see which Naruto is coming from. The other possibility is to improve the Rasengan or find other possible uses for it. Naruto could learn on how to use the Rasengan with one hand. His other hand would be free to throw a shuriken or grab an opponent. Alternatively, Naruto can learn to create multiple mini Rasengans. These can be tossed out to take out multiple opponents or force a single opponent to take cover. This gives Naruto time to close the gap between him and his opponent.

Beating shadow clones in general requires endurance and the ability to defend against multiple attacks from a wide variety of angles. Naruto's main use of clones are to overwhelm or aid in setting up an attack. Kimimaro had Shikotsumyaku which he utilized the moment he was nearly overwhelmed by the clones. (See chapter 205) Jigen: Shrinking, flight speed. Jutsu absorption. (Boruto Chapter 37: Flight and shrinking allowed Jigen to defend against multiple clones, despite that, gave Sasuke enough time to figure out he was shrinking things) Isshiki: what jigen had but on a higher scale. (Boruto Chapter 50: clones set up Sasuke for an attack that Isshiki had to use his shrinking in order to break) Mentioning Kakashi during a sparing test is stupid as none of them were going 100% (Naruto Chapter 246 Naruto clones allows him to counter Kakashi's clone) They even assisted him against Kaguya to buy time and prevent her from outright rushing Naruto and killing him. Not mention tricking her and zetsu (Chapter 684 and 685) Shadow clones have worked in his favor substantially more than they haven't. The only time they'd be an objectively bad idea is if his opponent started mass absorbing his clones. In short, his chakra levels and forms in combination with Rasengan and shadow clones can do the job 90% of the time.

Main characters in series like these are most often one trick ponies. Why? It make it waaay easier to write if the main character arsenal is not very large. As an example lets look at Sasuke. He is not the main character so the series doesn't revolve around him as much as Naruto. Therefore Kishi could tailor some awesome fights using Sasukes abilities, and he has a lot. For the main character you have to be careful with new abilities because it's easy to write yourself into a corner, with fans asking "Why didn't he use that ability?" during a fight. Even with Sasuke this is a problem as he never used Kirin again as well as chidori stream. But for Naruto each stage is very thought out. Shadow clones -> summoning -> rasengan -> rasenshuriken -> sage mode. Each has it's own powers and limitations, very scalable powers with is perfect for a main character. And varying enough that it's easy to match with the powers of other characters.

Well I'm late but basically rasengan and rasenshuriken can be mixed with any chakra nature and have different properties and power levels. Mix that with unpredictability of shadow clones. Pretty much all Naruto needs

The dumbest part is that naruto has no ranged jutsu at all. He should at least have 1 wind style jutsu as a ranged attack to not be a sitting duck when being bombarded from the skies. Throwable rasenshuriken is okay, but comes after the time skip and is way too high in commitment in terms of charka consumption. He should learn 1 jutsu danzo used, like gale palm or wind bullets. It just doesn't make sense that Jiraya doesn't notice this weakness about naruto and fixes it. And yes, I agree. Even if Naruto is not a book smart guy, he should learn 1 sealing technique.

I’m not too bothered by characters with limited move sets tbh. All that really matters is that the choreography for the fights is cool and interesting. Sure a versatile move-set can be really cool, but I don’t care if a character has 1,000 moves if their fights aren’t engaging. Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Bleach have protags essentially just armed with energy attacks but they’re some of the most well-known action anime in the world. For a different example, Sakamoto Days is a manga about people without magic or a million special moves but the action sequences are so creative and cool that it never gets boring. I think part of the problem is that almost all of Naruto's jutsus are kind of taijutsu variations. He can punch with fist or he can punch with rassengan. He can throw kinai or rassengan. An that's basicly it. Of coure punch/throw with rassengan is more powerful. But it would be nice to see more variety of what his jutsu can do. Naruto power ups are bigger, better, faster, stronger things he already knows. Sasuke power ups are completly diffrent jutsus. And he can do with those more diffrent things. And what naruto can do with his 2137 versions of rassengan? He can hit opponents with it in same way as before but stronger. Rasen shiriken was cool, but power ups to this were kind of boring in my opinion. He learn wind style. It would be cool to se him using pure wind justsu. At least one. Or learn at some point fireball jutsu. It was konoha signature jutsu. Story shows us that jutsu don't have to be strong to be usefull. And since some point of story Naruto learn only strong jutsu. And what can be stronger than very strong rassengan? Very very stron rassengan.

That's what I always wish had happened too, naruto is a lot more strategic in his fights than most give him credit for and I think if had 1 or 2 other jutsu he could get creative with it would have highlighted that much better.

I really wish Jiraiya learned him something more during timeskip. Jiraiya was a character with some of widest arsenal of different ninjutsus. Learn him at least 2 simple jutsus to combine with shadow clones and rasengan would be cool. In this Guren filler arc there was idea of collaboration ninjutsu with your summoning. That was a great idea and could've been really cool for Naruto to show at the beginning of the series. He should also learn more wind style ninjutsus with Kakashi. He is also Uzumaki, i really wish they gave him some sealing jutsu or some other ability. Karin and Kushina had some really cool abilities. I think this tracking ability Karin has could've been used for Naruto as well, but much weaker, because it's really annoying that when he learns sage mode and KCM out of nowhere he becomes a sensory ninja. I would give him this sensory ability and then those amps would utilize it. Also for a sealing jutsu i have a great idea. Combine rasengan or rasenshuriken with sealing jutsu. You throw a rasenshuriken at somebody and then activate sealing jutsu and opponent will be trapped in this chakra sphere. When he gets chakra from all tailed beasts it would be cool if each of them gave him some ability each of them have. It doesn't even have to be strong, just little something. Another great thing during war arc when Team 7 reunites could've been combine ninjutsu attacks. Naruto has wind. Sasuke has fire and lightning. And Sakura should has water and earth. It really made me mad that Naruto was training and Sakura got nothing. She should be training too. Give her water and earth style ninjutsus would give her variety too and also could be used in combine attacks with Naruto and Sasuke. There were really a lot wasted opportunities for all characters in the show, at least for Leaf 12. But that even main character has only 2 tricks is really sad.

When Naruto got his Six Paths powers with the Truth Seeking Orbs, as the orbs are a perfect mixture of all five Natures, they come with innate knowledge of all 5 individual changes in chakra nature too. So thanks to Old Man Six Paths, Naruto has mastered all 5 Natures, feats that alone made ninja like Hiruzen legends. And even with all that knowledge, RASENGAN!

Similarly, it was just one big hit, but it was weirdly more like a martial arts movie where it's more about fighting than doing a magic trick so it wasn't all the same

When naruto goes six paths he learns various kekkai genkai but he needs rasengan as a catalyst to use it. For example magnet release garra puts it in sand. When shukaku says to naruto that he can use his ability to seal juubidara Naruto wonders for a panel or so to how to use it then he uses it with rasengan. Since rasengan is just normal chakra spinning around Naruto just uses it to cast other types of attacks otherwise he won't be able to.

This is one of the strong points of Recca. He had a cool set of abilities he can use and combine. His fight with Kurei in the manga is so damn epic lol. Plus, his final ability was so well written. No wonder Horikoshi ripped it off completely but failed so damn hard lol
