I walked into the theater to watch "Transformers the Movie" expecting to have the greatest adventure of my young life. I walked out of that theater and, well, it wasn't pretty. More than 30 years later, I'm walking out of a showing of "Avengers: Infinity War" and I see this kid (probably about nine or ten years old) wearing a Spider-Man shirt... and bawling his friggin' eyes out. Then Tarantulas wants to do some mad science thing, screws up, and the maximal escapes or dies in the process. What a shame. Edit: I just realized Tarantulas is more an evil wheeljack than a competent starscream and this all makes SO much more sense now.
@YouCaughtCzarsАй бұрын
There's a graphic novel called "All Hail Megatron!" where the Decepticons actually won and the Autobots are banished to a dying Cybertron more or less surviving a zombie apocalypse. After winning, Megatron seems withdrawn to an extent and isn't issuing orders anymore and leading, and Starscream is picking up the slack and getting somewhat overwhelmed to the point he confronts Megatron about it. Megatron confides in him that the reason he tolerated the insubordination was because Starscream's ruthless ambition and conviction that he should rule made him the ideal Decepticon, and Starscream was too short-sighted to realize his own potential. Megatron more or less said that he wanted Starscream to grow to the point where he would actually be worthy to lead because at some point, Megatron wasn't going to be around forever and someone would need to step up. He basically tolerated Starscream's constant betrayals and schemes because he saw him as a protege who would succeed him. I actually quite liked that interpretation. It made Megatron's seemingly infinite patience have more substance. Another theory I read that made a lot of sense was that Megatron keeps Starscream around as a sign of strength. He is so not threatened by Starscream that it's not even worth the effort to do more than lightly smack Starscream down for his betrayals and screw-ups and all the other Decepticons would see that and follow-suit. Who knows? Maybe it kept him on his toes. How's anyone supposed to take Starscream seriously if all of his constant attempts at usurping leadership end up with him getting humiliated? Usually, they don't. Could also be that they don't have a lot of soldiers to lose in the war, so casually smiting a treacherous little idiot could be detrimental if for no other reason than other Decepticons might begin to think that if they screw up, they're disposable.

Thank you for explaining Starscream's character so well here. It's genuinely baffling to see other iterations of the character making him so cowardly and sniveling towards Megatron when G1 Starscream will literally say how stupid and wrong Megatron is while Megatron is choking him out. He rarely begs for forgiveness or grovels, and he only does so when he's genuinely fearing for his life. Imagine having to be subservient to the universe's dumbest and most senile gladiator who can rip out your vocal cords for almost no reason. It really makes sense in G1 exactly why Starscream wants to overthrow Megatron. It's not just because of power, or because Starscream is so prideful he can't stand being the second (even though that's part of it)-it's because Megatron is so goddamn incompetent that he prolongs the war just because of his stubbornness and stupidity. And every single time Starscream calls him out he gets verbally or physically attacked for it, even when he's proven right over and over again. I think anyone would go insane in that situation

All too often leaders in childrens shows, were basically perfect paragons. Optimus definitely was. So seeing one who was unsure of himself, plain-spoken, and just struggling to live up to his predecessor's legacy was really enthralling, even to me. Suffice to say, that was a lonely road to how as a TF fan. While its gotten somewhat better over the decades, its good to find someone else who appreciates my favorite character in the franchise. Didn't understand the hate for him, but I think that was mostly because I started with his generation before the rest, so I didn't really end up disliking him. Something about his struggle to take the reins and live up to his predecessors echoes a bit with me, and I really feel he's been maligned, up until recent years got him back in his groove (thanks IDW and Cyberverse, you gave my boi a fresh pair of wheels to roll out with again!).

@@MrCat-zz5eo As an adult I definitely now appreciate what they tried to do with Rodimus, especially with the Impossible task of repairing his reputation. His story starts out pretty tropey honestly, young reckless rookie who no one thinks will amount to anything ends up finding his potential and becomes the best of them all, pretty played out honestly. But that's where that story typically ends, this time we actually got to see where that lead, which was to a jaded Rodimus desperately wanting to live up to Primes enormous legacy, while simultaneously wishing he could leave all that boring diplomacy leader crap behind, it's honestly super compelling. I think my favorite detail is how Rodimus's face is noticeably more aged than Hot Rods, it's even a gimmick in his masterpiece toy. Poor guy just got delt a bad hand, even if he wasn't arguably responsible for getting Prime flatlined, it's debatable if he'd ever reach the same heights Prime did, but him getting snubbed with Optimus's return where the universe just goes "yeah you totally didn't have the touch" really always bothered me. I'm happy a new generation of writers who aren't bitter about a 40 year old movie have given Hot Rod new life. If you ever want an example of said bitterness, read Transformers Deviations, its a horrible comic where Hot Rod was prevented from getting prime shot, and is about 20 pages of Hot Rod screwing up and getting everyone else killed, the writer could just not let go.

@@bitwolfy If it helps, I've noted elsewhere that while Optimus was suited to be a leader in wartime, Rodimus could guide people in peacetime, and if ever the fighting broke out again. Furthermore, the Quintesson Journal episode shows him being quick to restrain the Xetaxxian and Lanarqan emissaries just as they're about to go nuclear on each other, buying Sky Lynx and co. time to bring the Journal into the peace talks and prove that both sides were manipulated by the Quintessons and their dastardly war profiteering schemes. During the second act, the villain Serpentor throws a live snake like a javelin into Duke's heart. He is clearly meant to die here, but the reaction to Optimus Prime's death caused the writers to change this. Now they linger on his face and Scarlett says he fell into a coma. The "Hot Rod killed Optimus" thing is an interesting case of what philosophers call moral luck. Hot Rod saw Megatron going for a gun that Optimus didn't see, and tries to stop him. This results in Optimus getting killed when probably he wouldn't have if Hot Rod hadn't been there. Or that's what the movie wants us to think...apparently Megatron believed he could grab the gun and shoot Optimus without Hot Rod's help. Anyway, the moral luck thing is that Hot Rod made the correct decision, but the decision ended up having the opposite outcome. Sort of like if you take away your drunken friend's car keys, and then he steals your car and accidentally runs over a kid. If Hot Rod's actions had the normal and expected consequences, he would have SAVED Optimus. Are Hot Rod's actions blameworthy? Is he responsible for Prime's death? There's no clear answer, and this is the problem of moral luck.
@hannahbrown2728Ай бұрын
Thanks for introducing me to this phrase for such a somewhat commonly used trope.

One issue with your comparison is that Hot Rod objectively made the situation worse by becoming a hostage. Meanwhile the drunken friend was going to drunk drive regardless of which car he did it in. Im glad to have been a Gen X kid growing up to experience Transformers G1 in real time. I was one that was very upset seeing Optimus die in the movie as well as being confused at the darker tone season 3 took. Concluding with the abrupt ending after season 4. Back then it was no internet so I never understood why they went back to showing season 1 episodes after the 3 Rebirth series. I wish it could've continued but some chapters have to close. I remember throwing my toys out moving into my early teenage years but now as an adult I've gone back to buy a few as a collector. Transformers G1 were some great times and it definitely helped with my development of a boy becoming a young man. Great video!!

I think it is important to point out that the “Return of Optimus Prime” teaser at the end of “Dark Awakening” was added in a later rerun of the episode shortly before the episode it was marketing came out. It initially didn’t have that at all, so it felt much more sadistic to sort of give the kids what they wanted and then burn it down in front of them.
@samuelwithers2221Ай бұрын
I was 3-4 when I watched the movie and Dark Awakening. It was the original version on DVD. I genuinely could not handle learning the concept of death because of Optimus Fucking Prime. When they brought him back at the end of the season, it was on a DVD we had rented once, and I was never sure for years after if that actually happened or I just imagined it to heal the trauma.

Galvatrons madness definitely came and went as the plot demanded. By the end of season 3 he almost seemed like he was slowly recovering, but by the Japanese continuity show headmasters, he was so much worse that his "grand plan" was to use the earth and "transforming parts" from his own men to become "Unicorn", which is literally Unicron's planet mode with Galvatron's head and limbs jutting out of it, like a man in a pumpkin costume.

At the very end of season 3, he had recovered, actually. Having been infected by the Hate Plague, then having it cured, seems to have actually fixed whatever was wrong with his mind. I feel they were trying to bring him back to being more of Megatron, since Optimus was back, so they wanted to reset things to get that old dynamic back. Except the show was canned.

my personal head cannon for the first two seasons having lack luster damage is that the autobots and decepticons were running on low power the entire time. The autobots not wanting to strain humanity's power supply only took what they needed while the decepticons were only able to use what they could steal and even then had to send a good amount of that back to cybertron to keep it running. Fast forward 20 years to the time of the movie and the decepticons had secured cybertron, likely solving their energy problems in the process meaning they were once again able to use full power for their weapons. Meanwhile the autobots finished building their own city on earth which would allow them to also produce their own energy again.
@darwinxavier3516Ай бұрын
That sounds great and all. Except in S3 when the Quintessons trick Galvatron into assaulting Cybertron, they gave the Decepticons a bunch of energon to revitalize themselves. Enough to even create an entire city size kaiju transformer. And there were zero casualties during the resurrgence. The only other time someone dies again is when Starscream has his body restored for a whopping few minutes.

The thing with the Transformers the Movie's animation is that apparently, the producers gave Toei much more money that a traditionally Japanese animated featured needs so they actually hired help from some freelance animators which worked in famous mecha anime from the '80s, I think that's a reason why some of the animators managed to hide those easter eggs like recycling some shots from Fist of the North Star and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam mechs in the Quintesson planet, and Toei managed to keep some of the budget to themselves and that helped with the production of the Saint Seiya anime adaptation which was a huge hit for Toei 7:25 this scene between Optimus and Megatron has become sort of a meme among Spanish-speaking fans because Optimus says to Megatron, "You are old Megatron. When I'm done with you, I'm going to sell you as scrap/junk", and Megatron responds, "Your grandma is a piece of junk!"

I agree. Personally I think they should’ve had Optimus survive the movie but realizing his mortality sets out to find a successor if he falls. Hell, given how the movie’s killing of characters came off as contradicting the first two seasons, they could’ve had Wreck-Gar leading an army of Junkions and resurrected Autobots in the climax. Have Optimus and many of the original cast that were meant to die simply leave to rebuild Cybertron with Optimus content to know the future is in good hands with Rodimus.

So, thanks for highlighting the soundtrack, it hits harder than Megatron gunning down my childhood icon.

I'd seen the Transformers show as a kid. I was born in '86, so it was on TV, but most of my Transformers was from watching Beast Wars when it first aired. That was an incredibly good series with janky animation! I rewatched it a few years ago (at 1.5x) and loved every minute! I first watched the UHD Blu-ray last year with my then 5 year old. What an incredible experience! Bright colors, great animation, great sound design, and the HDR was worth it! I even bought the album! It's soooo 80s. It's what you'd show someone if you wanted to say "this is 80s music". I never knew about Rodimus Prime. I'm assuming the Transformers show I saw as a kid was all re-runs of season 1 and 2 because Optimus was there.
