I like that they showed what the Anbu could do in this episode despite their efforts not working

It's a damn tragedy we never got a properly animated Anbu fight. I'm not counting Kakashi and Itachi because they were already established badasses before we even knew they were Anbu. Hell an arc following an Anbu team with good writing would've been more compelling than Boruto lol.

Fun fact, the female summoning Pain (Animal Path/Chikushōdō) shares the same VA as Shiho, the glasses girl from Hidden Leaf Cryptology Team that has a crush on Shikamaru. For those who did not watched the Chūnin Exams flashback filler arc in the later Shippuden, this summoning Pain formerly known as Ajisai, one of the Konan's loyalist and eventually promoted as Chunin right after that exam, yet killed during her first S-rank mission, her final scene in that arc appeared as a dead body kept same as that memory scene(2:17).

My only guess is that Ibiki got his torso area blown out from the summoning similar to how Sasuke got his torso blown out by Killer Bee's Lariat (at the battle from Unraikyo) but he didn't fully die, I'm guessing because of his insane pain tolerance and tenacity which we can glean from the scars he has all over his body. Dude is probably just really resilient and was near-death but Katsuya quickly was able to heal him. But yeah an ordinary dude would've just instantly died from having a fucking pterodactyl implode from his back
