In it, we follow the latest novel by Jiraiya as he tells the tale of Naruto, Sasuke, and the rest of the leaf genin. Naruto is renown for it's incredible ratio of filler to non-filler, with over 41% filler. But is it all bad? What is the worst filler? What is the best filler? The filler itself wasn’t the problem. Aside from the flashback fillers, most of the fillers were good. The problem was that the fillers were placed at the worst times, during MAIN arcs. It DESTROYS the pacing, and it really does ruin the anime.

The Infinite Tsukuyomi dream arc thing could've been a nice breather from non-stop battling from the war arc. It could've also helped flesh out the side cast and their desires. Instead, it was just kinda thrown in there, and many of the stories went on for probably much longer than they should've.

It can be annoying at times, but there have only really been one, maybe two Naruto episodes that I outright skipped out of boredom. Otherwise, they were mostly entertaining to me

I had no problem binging the filler, some were dumb sure, but most could, at the very least, entertain for 20 minutes. Honestly, this AU filler was the hardest for me to get through because i knew it meant nothing to the plot even in a fillerish way. The only thing to take away from that arc is cool moments and matchups never seen in the main timeline.

side characters are used to propell the main 2 as characters further,its not he didnt know,he didnt want to because that isnt the purpose of the story and if kishi did develop characters he would be going against his own message of the whole story(fate)

Naruto Shippuden suffered from the Dragon Ball Z syndrome. Much like the Z Fighters succumbed to the prominence of the Saiyans, the Konoha 11 and other side characters became irrelevant in the wake of Naruto and Sasuke’s development.

@@PlankShard it's impossible for a character driven series to develop side characters to such extent.it's natural that It focus on the main 6 or 7 [in case of naruto it's primarily 2 but lets not forget that other 10 side characters have developed and progressed than even main protagonists of other mainstream shonen,it might not be the characters you wanted to develop(rock Lee of shikamaru for example) but others(almost all of the main villains)certainly did develop]

The filler of Naruto and Sasuke getting their hands bonded together and being forced to work in tandem with one another in order to save Sakura and secure that golden bear statue will forever be one of the most memorable filler episodes to me. Such a classically styled Naruto episode.

its one funny ep..but theres many like it and it steals from the first 2 arcs and garra fight a little with that concept and its part of a filler arc of flashbacks that never occurred cause they don't fit the timeline so fuck it..also them kissing again?..really ...and narutos a little extra horny for sakura and angry for no reason at sasuke in this one..it seems out of character...sakuras also very just absent in this one mindset wise..she feels like ino...sasuke also is extra lame in this one...its the definition of filler being bad...its just not needed..

some canon eps have padding so filler added into them and the manga has some padding too...and some filler I would say..sure I liked the message of hanzo vs mifune but like its filler..those 2 characters weren't heard from again after their fight yet given 2 chapters in the manga fo focus with this new added bs retcon backstory to link them about conviction or some shit..its just really lame....neither appeared again so what was the point...also seeing 1 old ass swordsman with no ninjutsu genjutsu taijutsu beat hanzo made no sense since he beat the sannin so wtf..that fight would of been cool if chojuro joined in to beat hanzo...cause hes the new mizukage in chapter 700 so he shows up again as he did later in the war slicing zetsu up to protect the feudal lords...so he matters..and it makes the fight make more sense in the story since their a strong swordsman duo...

As someone who has been defending Naruto filler (and wrote my final dissertation involving it!) this video was therapeutic to watch. If only the rest of the community could stop ruining their own media for themselves on principle. There is no authorial reason to disqualify anime/book/movie material because it was not entirely created by Kishimoto. The manga was never Kishimoto's sole creation, and worshipping author images is entirely useless projection that doesn't hold up to scrutiny as he himself incorporates non-canon elements. The only qualifier for any story canon or 'non-canon' should be: "Do I like watching it?" The shogi moment you bring up is a prime example, and i'd argue there's actually many more moments and stories than you may give the anime credit for. Movie 3 gives Naruto, Kakashi and Shikamaru such rich development for instance, and some of the war expansion was brilliant for linking the series back to its origins. Chikara IMO, is one of the greatest arcs in the series- and it doesn't have to fit into some fictional rigid timeline to be relevant or enjoyed. I wish fans would stop teaching each other these bizarre ideas about fiction, it leads to denial and needless gate-keeping.

Naruto has so much worth discussing and while it may not be the deepest show, it certainly has a lot to say about character motivations and development. I too have wanted to make a video on this series for awhile, and I sometimes find it way too optimistic about humanity as it's not nearly dark enough for my specific tastes, but it still has dime interesting complexities. For this video, though, fillers have been the bane of Naruto, especially Shippuden.

naruto does explore the most dark aspect of the whole world in the darkest way possible throught the whole series in a very subtle manner(ie:fate) look in the arcs again and question the content and you might find some interesting themes (ex-the real theme off the pain arc,along with 1st part of the war arc wasnt cycle of hate,it was perspective and love) im in the middle of figuring out more stuff tho

I’d say that Naruto is quite a deep show as far as Shonen series are concerned. What with how it spans the scope and severity of topics such as discrimination, death and hatred, depression and self belief, fate and destiny etc.; it always managed to tap into the more realistically humanistic nature of storytelling that a lot of other Shonen series simply didn’t at the time.

its a shame mostly only nostalgic attention seeking adults and shounen fans that don't even care for deeper writing series watch naruto and talk about it online when it comes to power scaling and stuff that means nothing.... cause many people who could appreciate the other writing dynamics of the series better than most of its own fanbase could ever dream too yeah they won't watch the show cause of its genre and the rules it breaks and because its a fighting show and.shamefully its cancerous haters/fans....one piece managed to appeal to non shounen fans out west cause somehow it preached that its not just about battles..people sadly thing naruto is juts about battles so they stay away from it cause they are not interested in battles so the fanbase is contrived of stupid people...which push other people away...and it gets unnecessary hate for things it really should not...i have noticed 80% of the fans don't even fully understand the obvious characters that are shoved in our face and analyzed to death like obito sasuke itachi naruto and jiraya let alone the subtle ones like a hinata for instance..thats a shame..even people who like it are naive to the writing and intent..they focus on the story a little much and nitpicks and the clothing and attacks or whats happening more then the themes narrative message or morality its just about fights ...its a shame

I think part of Sakura's journey is realizing she's not a combat ninja. She offers support and insight but she's not a fighter. Tsunade trained an entire corp of ninja to avoid combat, stay alive, and heal others. The genjutsu was weird because they dropped that but oh well, Sakura just needed to figure out what her best option was as a ninja. She struggled to find her way, but once she did, she healed several main characters from the brink of death. She is extremely annoying in Part 1 but she acknowledges her flaws and tries to work through them during Part 2. She'll never be my fav but she showed incredible growth and that's rare for the fan girl character.

Mecha Naruto was so off the walls it was actually funny in a crackfic sort of way. Also I remember the worst part of that AU arc being just how much of the animation was recycled and how some parts felt like they were only there to reuse animation at the cost of the AU following a more sensible progression of events.

Filler can be a great option for exploring headcanon, adding greater depth, and fleshing out characters' backstories. For instance, that one filler episode for Shippo in Inuyasha with the fox kid was pretty good. That said, filler plagued Inuyasha, and the series' high marks are the beginning, getting all the power moves, the band of seven, and then the final act. The Final act showed how much tighter the show could have been, especially since it focused on progress as opposed to the infinite cycle of will they won't they/demon of the week. Worst filler ever? Bount Arc in Bleach. Yay for some Uryuu stuff, but it was way too long, and then totally ignored.

The bount arc was too long. It didn’t get interesting until they reached Soul Society and we got some interesting battles. The arc actually had some elements they kept like the 3 bount detectors, which made appearances in the show and its openings and endings until the show ended. That’s pretty rare for filler characters to stick around

unpopular opinion: im glad the original naruto series had filler after sasuke retrieval arc. for me, if the anime went the way of the manga, it would feel like a cliffhanger. i really liked how naruto went to missions with his team mates and gained the respect he always wanted.

The problem with filler arcs is that the anime crew really can't do anything to change the status quo, or if they do they'll likely be permanently headed in an anime original direction (Such as the original FMA) however assuming that the anime wants to keep adapting the source material then seasonal breaks (Such as with MHA) are probably the way to go, of course for a long time Japan really didn't do the whole seasonal break thing, a show ran its course until it ended and that was that, and if their ever was a second season it definitely wasn't planned in advance, thus shows like Naruto and Bleach entered Filler hell and One Piece slowed its pace to a snail's crawl, and while slowing a show's pace may be more profitable for a studio because they're rarely ever in Filler territory I personally I hate it, at least with large amounts of filler you can skip over them on a rewatch or if you're behind and trying to catch up, the only solution for a show like One Piece is to give it the Kai treatment (and who knows when that'll happen, though it probably will at some point given One Piece's popularity, but that'll just be more money for the studio to make, on top of all the money they're making on running the show at a snail's pace, which is a real shame cause some of One Piece's Fillers are real good like the G-8 Filler Arc and why did the show stop adapting the side stories I mean it's free filler that they don't have to put much thought into they didn't even adapt the Ace filler and he's hugely popular and-- OK now I'm rambling, I'll see myself out...)

Just here to ask if its worth watching the filler starting from Episode 136 of Naruto. Is there any substance that I should watch it? I have seen few filler episodes of Naruto during my runthrough like the Kakashi mouth reveal episode and honestly I feel bored seeing those. Considering its from the same studio as Bleach which already has terrible filler, I am really not sure if I should or not. I decided to not even start with Shippuden because I heard its not worth getting invested.

The fillers I like very much are Aoi Rokushō filler and Mizuki filler. I even wish they were in the manga. I am unsure if other fillers were really necessary but these two are the best.

Actually in naruto classic I didn't mind the filler. i liked the filler actually. Those episodes tended to be in between arcs and they allowed the story to cool down a bit. And I enjoyed seeing the main characters at home having fun. But in Shippuden, things got crazy during the war arc. You'd be watching a great fight scene, and suddenly they would cut that for weeks for some filler episodes. I remember staying for like a year without watch Naruto, during the war arc because there was so much filler. And I would be compelled to watch things again through spoiler posted on KZbin of some great fights going on when they stopped doing the fillers.

The best filler arc is the 3 tails filler arc. Its mostly because everything cannon before it was utter trash (we are talking Tenshi bridge and Gara Rescue here). And it was placed at the end of an arc which didint disrupt anything . And the arc itself is pretty good. Also i like Gurren very much.

i think you also have to consider the animation staff being under pressure just like the manga author. It depends on the planning, but even then some limitation could come up, either the writers for the show have no ideas or given too little time.

Worst 2 fillers are the dude with the nine tails arm from episode 50-70 and that fucking boat trip that took twenty episodes. Infinite Tsukuyomi and Chunin exam fillers at the end aren't terrible but that last stretch from 400 to 500 is really rough, they really pushed it to reach 500 episodes

I watched all the fillers in shippuden and to be honest they are part of what made my binge of Shoppuden awesome. There is so much hidden gems in the fillers, however most people will never know that because all filler gets painted as trash. Ironically you get a lot of development with supporting characters you don't get in the main story arc. It's kinda sad really people complain about characters getting wasted and not getting development but then give them character arcs in filler episode which aren't considered canon and the same filler episodes of which people don't watch cause it tends to be so mundane compared to the main arc.

@@squwiidp7244 he was..i know for a fact he wrote the road to sakura filler episode the kakashi face reveal episode(albeit that is based on his own witing) and also for sure he wrote itachi's shinden light novel....all of which that got animated...i know for a fact he wrote that hanabi hinata sisterly focused 2 parter semi recap filler before naruto the last came out episodes 389-390 of shippuden so people could remember the hyuga clan as it fleshed out more of hinata's backstory like why she was disowned from the heiress position and showed her as a good sister and how hanabi saw her as a role model since she never lost herself despite her clan's pressure and its thanks to naruto....it aired right before the big filler arc in the anime about the 2nd chunnin exams durring the war and naruto/sasuke semi died and saw the sage i believe..i know for a fact he wrote those eps...

I think a lot of Naruto’s filler is really good once you cut out flashback episodes and memories. That’s what slows down the show. Otherwise most of the filler is used to expand on characters motivation or when it is just pointless filler it’s typical put in place to serve as a tension release for the audience. That’s why most filler is comedy based.

This is an interesting discussion because we have the anti-filler group who want it gone and we get a show like Attack on Titan, but it takes a long time for seasons to come out. Meanwhile, other anime come out with episodes regularly but the quality sometimes suffers. For me, it depends on where the filler is. I don't mind a compelling filler arc but it needs to come during a natural break in the main storyline. If it interupts the action and throws off the pacing, I'm likely to resent it. I also get frustrated with arcs that are repetitive (find an orphan, Naruto inspires orphan, repeat) I don't mind extra adventures or character backstory, but it can't contradict established lore (such as the weird weather kid being Naruto's first friend, which isn't what's been explicitly stated) I think Shippuden did some great episodes and expanded on some of the other characters, but they also had some big misses for me. I would say though, my least favourite filler was just before the time skip. There was WAY too much of it. Some gems in there but the sheer volume was super annoying.

I think One Piece has the best filler. Like Ace's time at Alabasta. Most of it was filler, which surprised me, because it had all the heart and character of canon material and fit seamlessly. The manga actually feels quite unsatisfying with his early departure. Then there's the whole G8 arc which in some ways was better than the canon Foxy arc that came afterwards.

The Updated Naruto Kai keeps great scenes like Shikamaru's breakdown, Hinata's fight against Pain. And other. And even if you decide to avoid filler by watching the canon episodes only, these two aforementioned scenes exist within episodes titled as canon, so watchers wouldn't miss out on them anyways (unless they fastforward the video for some reason lol) Yeah, fillers do have some scenes worth watching, but they're rare and it's not worth the waste of time. Filler can be good. Especially for people like me that don’t know the manga. The biggest problem is that awesome story is being told, you are gripping the seat with your fingers ,hooked by the raw feelings,than BOOM, filler. On the other hand filler is great for shining the light on other characters and letting them shine. The arc with Guren who has Crystal Style was a great arc. Anko also got her own arc. Those are good ways to use filler. Bad ways are waiting until awesome fight is happening than slap them with filler. Buzzkill.

The Loser ninja arc or whatever was where Naruto, my favourite anime of all time, lost me beacause it was such a bad timing. The war was at its peek at the time and was really exciting and waiting every week for a new episode just to get yet another filler was dreadful. Now I've come back to finish the show and I'm skipping most filler arcs beacaus they really don't add much to the story with a few exceptions like the Kakashi Anbu arc or the Senju/Uchiha backstory arc or some funny episodes here and there. But the original Naruto series is still the best when it was just badass fighting, waving signs and good animation.

i didn't love it..he seemed to beat around the bush talking more about sakura in a positive light than im used to and it got me mad...a lot of people like to defend her but i hated her so much and nothing will change my feelings cause i had to sit through her awful personality and complain how badly kishi wrote her from jump and how people try to use her improvement as growth when its just realization that he can get girls interested in shippuden by hyping her up since so many fangirls flooded the scene thanks to itachi/sasuke and the Naruto vs sasuek fight at the time the manga got to the timeskip and with neither active in the first arc and a half of the story sakura had to be in the focus so she got to shine for a little bit until sasuke woke up and then she was regulated to useless again...it doesn't excuse the fact that for over 619 chapters as a main heroine all she did was heal a few times punch one summoning and fight sasori and ino and stall for time biting a guy...like that was all she did..its pathetic..she also was a hostage complained and claimed she was in love and on their level..shes an idiot...trained by tsuande Kakashi with Naruto by her side...thank goodness for the medical introduction cause without that she really would just be useless and that took how many chapters to become a focus?...she should of always had that since it would give her a role ala rin ...medic of the group..shouldn't they teach first aid at the academy like basic healing..

I think the fillers were not the only annoying thing about the in its deepest level brilliant show. The never ending and ever present expo that would just pop up in every single episode made me really think that this show was thinking I am retarded. At some point it felt like it was not necessary at all to invest the time and actually watch the show because you could mainly just hop into the story at any episode with a minimum of knowledge about what is going on and still get everything. that was really cheap. filler seasons like the one of kakashi were of course great and although I thought that the show would have a lack of arc at sone point they really just took their time to unravel everything.

Tragety This is absolutely the biggest problem with the anime. I know that they need to fill a 20 minute time slot, but the constant exposition about things that happened two minutes ago just became insufferable. It didn’t help that most of the time it was accompanied by a seven minute-long flashback, usually of something we just saw last episode. Hell, sometimes there were flashbacks of the same fucking event within the span of two episodes.

i know its to blame on the manga, but the series lost its edge when things got bigger and bigger and more spectacular, crushing strong moments in the past by making them look insignificant by comparison. Zabuza vs kakashi was really cool, but in their rematch when zabuza is reanimated you can see how they had to buff him up to still measure with the shows current power levels, which themself would be dwarfed by Eons two seasons later

The best fillers to me are : 1/Tsunade's dream in the infinite tsukuyomi 2/the fight with the sound 4 in the 4th great Ninja war 3/the chikara arc 4/the 3 tails arc The worst fillers to me are: 1/the boat arc 🤢🤢🤢 2/the Sora arc 3/almost all the episodes after the Sasuke retrieval arc in part one (-anko's episode and the episodes where Sakura naruto and jiraya went to Orochimaru's hideout)

Part 2 filler is pretty meh like the part as a whole, but without part 1 filler the serious is pretty much unwatchable, to the point that reading the manga is the wrong way to consume the story. Take gaara for instance. While he is pulled away from hatred in his “canon” appearance, their is no indication he wants to become a kage or has any capability without his tailed beast. So when this happens in the manga it is completely ridiculous and breaks immersion. Filler writers fix this by adding the arc where we get gaara vs hoko. A reformed gaara states his intention to protect his village despite his difficulty, and even wins while resisting shikaku. Filler writers >>> kishi
