Was Danzo Evil Or Was He Really A Hero?

Danzo Shimura is regarded by many Naruto fans as one of the most evil characters in the Naruto world. He's the man who backed Itachi into a corner, forcing him to carry out the Uchiha massacre and wipe out the Uchiha clan in one night, saving only his younger brother Sasuke! In Naruto Shippuden filler, Danzo both tried to take Kakashi's sharingan and tried to warp Kakashi's very vulnerable mind after Minato died. Behind the scenes he both supported the village, all while making moves behind the third hokage and Tsuande's back to set the stage for him to ascend to hokage! Throughout his existence in the Naruto story, Danzo has done things that have put him forever in the doghouse of fans everywhere! However, now that the Naruto manga has been done for almost six years, it's time for us to look back at the legacy of Danzo Shimura and discuss the major question in the room, was Dazno really evil or should he be regarded as a hero, a shadow hokage like Sasuke Uchiha currently is!

Danzo got what he deserved. It was so satisfying seeing Sasuke avenge Shisui, Itachi and the Uchiha clan by killing Danzo 11 times. I'm really glad Kishimoto allowed Sasuke to achieve such sweet revenge. You don't see that much in animes nowadays because they make characters move past revenge.

Danzo never cared about 'peace'. He's just a jealous, pitiful, cowardly old man who wanted to rule Konoha with his ways because he's delusional and thinks everything he does is 'for the good of the village'. People really got fooled because of that flashback of him with Hiruzen but that further proves that one of the main reasons he wanted to become Hokage was to be better than Hiruzen and please his ego. In his core, Danzo was nothing more than a jealous coward. Not a 'anti-hero' who would do anything in order to protect the leaf or the village. He only cared about the village if it meant that HE can rule over it. Nothing more, nothing less.

He's literally the whole reason a lot of the issues in Naruto happened. The Akatsuki turning evil, his meddling. Naruto being hated by the village, his doing. The Uchiha Clan being treated they way they were, to then leading them to form coup, because of his influence in the village. Which pretty spiraled the events in Itachi and Sasuke's future. Obito being able to get to that type of position to relive Madara and control the Gedo Stone. Turning Kabuto into villain. The majority of the villains were his fault from past behind the scenes meddling. All because he wasn't named Hokage, even though Sarutobi was the clear answer.

Danzo would go crazy if he saw what Boruto's era is like up until Kara start causing problems. I don't think he would be able comprehend just how peaceful things were.

Many people don't realise the importance of Danzo for the leaf. He was the darkness that scared the opponents of the Leaf. He took the role of the Balance like Tobirama did when Hashirama was the Hokage. And he managed to do it under 3 Hokages.

Danzo was a necessary evil, but I think his one sided vision caused his downfall, and many avoidable conflicts, in the end.

Danzo is like Madara or Nagato in a sense that they all wanted something good but they're doing something "evil" to achieve their goal. Madara wanted to create a perfect world, Nagato wanted to end the cycle of Pain, and Danzo wanted to protect Konoha. In a way, they all care.

How I see it, Danzo tried to do things a certain way, but failed at it because he was misguided. I personally believe that Danzo’s actions were inspired by Tobirama Senju, who had the mindset of the warring times still ingrained in him. The problem was that while Tobirama experienced those times, so even though he knew that the experience he gained from it helped him as both a Shinobi and leader, Danzo didn’t experience how it was like to be in warring times, not like Tobirama. He may have experienced war, but he never experienced how it felt like to wake up everyday, preparing to fight and die in battle from childhood into adulthood. Because of knowing the horrors of what the Shinobi world was like before his brother and Madara found Konoha, Tobirama was more accepting of the Will fo Fire, even to his dying breath. By the time Danzo did see war, not his teachers were dead so no one was really there to guide him on how to cope and handle war, especially in the future where it is inevitable. Danzo just thought it was those warring times that made the Senju brothers, and even Madara, as strong as they were, so he focused on being a Shinobi like the ones before the days of the Hidden Villages, and that’s what not only made him the man that he is, but also made him a horrible contender for the seat of Hokage. A Hokage is someone who doesn’t use Shinobi, but relies on their help, a Hokage is willing to jump into the fray to lend aid and do things with his own two hands instead of hiding away and letting others do his work, and most importantly, a Hokage is always willing to risk his own life for even a simple child who has no potential or desire to become a Shinobi. Danzo had no traits of a Hokage, and yet he felt he needed to be the Hokage to make Shinobi strong again like the Shodaime, Nidaime and Madara before them, that is why he was always hiding away to let his own do the dirty work and die for his cause, because he felt he was the only one to carry out his plan, instead of believing in the children of the future to carry on his spirit. Danzo only truly believed in the strength of the shadows of the past, thus his Will of Shadows was born. It was only when he was cornered and had no other plan that he embraced a spark of the Will of Fire as he died.
