It's been speculated that, since their tusks are hollow and flexible, narwhal tusks aren't used for combat nor breaking the artic ice since they're too brittle for this, some say males use it primarily to attract mates, but it's also said that they're sometimes used to stun prey

It has been "speculated" but there is no speculation on the ivory tusk of the Narwhal from the Innuit people. It's ivory and was used as a spear and revered for its' great spirituality.

Well judging by the level of pain we get from a toothache and how extreme it feels when your teeth are sensitive and you put the wrong thing in your mouth (ice, sugar, metal, etc) it does not surprise me that the narwals could be using the tooth as a sensor wand. 🤷🏼‍♀️💡 Makes perfect sense honestly

The only people that are allowed to hunt Narwhals for food are the original residents in the Artic. I watched a documentary years ago on the Alaskan Natives and their original diet. ( before pizza shops were invented) They actually showed the men hunting these animals in seal skin kayaks. I had never heard of them before that.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Norwalls in person. There were 16 of them trapped in the Homer Spit in Alaska. They had gotten trapped by the ice. People were working together to break the ice up to give them a fighting chance. Not all made it. But 12 did. It was a miracle that so many of them did make it. They are truly amazing to see.

We do know something more about a narwhal’s tusk! That it is not centered, it grows from its jaws and not a tusk at all, but one of the two front teeth that is over grown, the other tooth looks like a jutting bald tooth, while the other tooth looks like a tusk, that’s why both male and female have them and sometimes a narwhal can have two fully protruding “tusks”.
