In art you’re measured among your peers. What Hitboy did with Magic and some tracks, was update, refine and modernise the Preemo 90s sound. Premier has to at least keep up with if not step up even more. There’s nothing wrong with competition, that is hip hop. I love the track but Nas outshines the production and carries the song. Nothing wrong with that. As long as the rest of the album is not just one sample looped a hundred times with no progression people will be okay with it. This is just a heads up to Premier to step up in the arena. Peace.

This is what I’m afraid of with a Nas and Premo album. Whereas Hit-Boy gave Nas a contemporary sound I think Premier will give Nas more of a late 90’s sound. I still plan on listening to the album and I hope to God I’m wrong.

Great points. Similar to a lot of Primo beats, it is a very tight and repetitive loop which, by the time Nas starts his verse, is assimilated by the listener's ears so it settles in behind Nas's vocals and lets him play around with the space between the chops/drums. Unusual in that the loop has silence on the drop/first quarter of the loop. This is going to BANG in a live venue in any DJ set. Great chorus and concept. Nas's patterns are great choices and he sounds energetic. I agree with some that - and I subjectively hope that - it's used as an intro or better yet, an interlude, a counterpoint to a grander vision, but the whole album could very well use a 2 verse per song format that seems to be the modern standard (a lot of that on those Hit-Boy albums), I prefer those 4-5 min joints or 30-40 bar verses like on NY State of Mind, but then again a Nas verse isn't your normal 16... but the ONLY thing I hope is they don't rush their OWN process and try to put out something the size of Nasir... vs. really getting deep in the lab for a few months and generate a big body of work, pick the best ones, curate any cameos, find the illest samples, etc. etc.

I've been a Preemo stan since 'Step In The Arena'. NOBODY has been a bigger ambassador of a Nas/Premier album more than me. That being said, Define My Name, production wise was iight. It wasn't bad... But I was hoping & expecting a neck snappin' eargasm. It sounded a little more pedestrian. I thought 'Beat Breaks' was more of a standout track sonically, if we're judging their more recent work. Nas & Preemo have a pretty high bar of previous work. The standard is AND should be higher than just about any other Nas producer, minus Large Pro & Hit Boy. That's just what it is. I don't think it's being overly critical that ppl want & expect an entire album of Nas & Premier to be monumental. Might not be achievable because artistically, they both have evolved past their previous work. BUT the standard is the standard.

Talkin down on Premo.... Those are people that dont like authentic hip hop and rap. Premier makes rap music that sets the stage to let the rappers words and flow be highlighted so you listen to it and get the respect for the rhyme. This gen are looking for dominant melody that dictate what the rapper does so they gotta ride with or compete with the beat. This is fine sometimes and for certain things but those beats are also a way to hide the MCs lack of skill.
