So happy to have run across this video. I was stationed at Moffett from 83 to 87. Was an aircraft mechanic. Spent 3 years with VP31 and almost 2 with VP50. Brings back the good old days. It was a very special place with very special people that I had the absolute pleasure working with. Too bad someone hasn't invented that time machine yet. Thanks for the memories Donald. God bless. Go Navy!!!

I was 7 or 8 at this show. So cool to see so many that were there after all this time! Fairly certain we were able to tour the aircraft that day before she flew as well. The P3 was my favorite aircraft all thanks to my childhood neighbor Bruce Mallibert. I'll never forget him or growing up on Little Meadow Ct.

I could have written this post.. I am pretty sure I was at this air show too.. I would have been 11… we lived over the flight path in Sunnyvale .. this is literally the sound of my childhood. My dad also worked at Moffett so we were on base quite a bit.

Donald, what an awesome video! My dad was a design engineer at Lockheed Burbank from the start of P3A through part of P3C and had worked on the Electra prior. As a child I would have my dad tell me all about "his planes" and what their purpose was. He taught me so much! He worked on upgrading the electrical and fuel systems. As a liaison between the Navy and Lockheed, he went to all the bases...Moffett, etc, to inspect the planes. My dad would bring back surprises from each area! My dad died in 2012 and I keep the P-3 memories alive for him! Thank you for posting an awesome video!!!!

Hi Melissa...awesome that your father worked on the P3 program at Lockheed Burbank. There’s a possibility my father new him as my father was the Medical Director at Lockheed California from 1950 to 1980. My dad passed in 93.

Scott, I'm so glad you wrote! A neat surprise! I bet our dads knew of each other at least! I feel like a proud daughter with my dad being a P-3 "family member"! I miss hearing about his P-3 stories and his pride in "his" planes and loved being with Lockheed. I wish you the best and am so sorry your dad passed away. He sounded like a neat man! Scott, you made my life brighter by sharing...many thanks!✈️Not quite a P-3 but it's the closest I could find!

Nice video. I lived in Sunnyvale from 1970 to 1981 and loved to watch the P3s come and go over the house. Years later I got to work on some electronics on a Dutch Navy P3 at the Portland airbase which was quite a treat. It was a cold day on the tarmac and after the job was done I was offered some coffee. They and a large urn in the back of the plane and I never have had such good coffee! I had no idea how capable the P3 was. I thought they just tracked the subs. I’m at my dad’s in Sunnyvale this week; Oct 2020 and now there is a different plane landing at Moffet. I assume it’s a sub tracker also.

I was in VP-26 stationed at Naval Air Station Brunswick Maine. I was an AME and became a flight engineer. These planes are incredible. There is no sweeter sound than when these engines go from alpha to beta...or when they fly over you at full speed! I can't believe they closed Brunswick and I can't believe they are phasing out these planes.

A girl friend and I used to make out behind Moffet and the co located labs that were doing space and nuclear research, I ran a manufacturing plant right across 101 from them. Actually saw a P-3 and a NASA Convair 880 crash on the golf course behind my plant as a tower controller vectored both aircraft onto the same runway at Moffet, They fell onto the golf course and all were killed except one airman who was thrown from the Orion, but then run over by a rescue vehicle, Many memories come back regarding this plane,,, I am pvt pilot and used to fly just NORTH of San Jose and one day almost got clipped by a P-3 coming back from patrol. He just poped up over the Santa Cruz mountains and was maybe 500 feet away as he headed for the barn. Scared the heck out of me. Another time was flying my parents and wife up to Lake Tahoe. At that time Air California was flying Electra's into Tahoe, He was taking off and I was in an extended pattern as I watched him come up. Thought he was far enough away to make my turn and flew directly into his wake, Must have dropped 500 feet in an instant, Thought my dad was going to have a heart attack, Anyway sorry for the long story, My memories, Then they moved them up to Wigbe Island in WA where my son was stationed,
@Mikeyleewillis4 жыл бұрын
I was stationed there in 1973 right after the accident. Heard many stories from people on the base, how that one crewmember was run over, and how a few others were still alive in the P3 but burned to death. So tragic...

My childhood neighbor Bruce Mallibert was the only survivor of that incident. He and his wife were the nicest people ever! Bruce told that story to me a couple of times and he mentioned that it was a mistake and he wasn't upset with anyone at all. He also would tell me that while he was in the coma for 3+ months, he heard everything and new peoples names when he came out of the coma. Such a great man. Small world!

Note: If anybody out there knows if there is a surviving copy of "VP-91: B-MOD 83" out there, that would be fantastic to see on KZbin. All 9 assigned aircraft (including the hangar queen) lined up on the South Ramp in two columns, simultaneously starting engines, taxiing out in line, and taking off in succession. I was on one of them, getting my checkride. The Skipper decided to do the exercise after we did not win the E, even though we were numerically superior to the squadron that did get it. I hope he got his point across to CNARF!

Sir, you were very likely the man who was there when a 7 year old boy and his dad stepped into that aircraft that very day. The P3 was my favorite plane for 2 reasons. They did a "small arms fire avoidance" landing (steep & fast) touching down short of the numbers, full reverse to stop and backed up the runway (in reverse) to their touchdown spot, and then did a full power short takeoff and banked away from the end of the field, at low altitude (to avoid "ground fire").
