So what happened was Jay Z was obsessed with Nas and how he got it out the mud so he wanted to replicate everything Nas was and do it better and Nas wasn’t feeling him so now he’s became his number one enemy and Jay Z got with his baby mama for a while so he could get some dirt on Nas and tell Nas he’s the best and he’s a real G and got him back. So Jay Z is a pretty messed up human being, all of this because Nas wasn’t rocking with him from the beginning. Very interesting when you think about it, it seems that Jay Z‘s plan was always to become the greatest rapper from New York and tried to do it biting off someone’s style. Jay Z used to rap different from what got him big… Too bad we all know he’s not the greatest.

You left out some of the story lol. He came up as Jazzy under the wing of Jaz-O. I would question some of your reading. The line about skeletons in closets read more like Nas putting his skeletons out for everyone to see, replacing them with weaponry. In those released verses he speaks openly about that relationship, addressing Jay's reference in Takeover. That line at the end read as Nas dismissing the fiasco (or trying to). I bet Nas or someone in his team thought about it and decided to change tactics. Probably because trying to "own it" when your BM cheating on you is a losing strategy. I would hope it was also because they decided to leave that woman alone. She didn't ask to be in these songs. I appreciate the analysis bro, that was interesting.

Your right. However Nas has done all of that too. Its public. When it comes to freestyles jayz is good. He loses most of the freestlye battles though. Who has he beat? Im ignorant. I would not consider Nas's freestyle ability when i compare him to others. Not his thing. He's a writer. Story teller. Jay is a hustler. Nas is legendary artist. Love and respect both those men.

@JustForAnimalss it's not about accomplishments and riches in this conversation. nas was the better lyricist ans MC and nas won that battle both lyrically and mentally. jay z always looks very uncomfortable any time it is brought back and he is still holding onto his grudge to this day and you can see that with him dropping albums at thesame tume as nas trying to overshadow him. Jay’s downfall to losing this battle was that he wasn’t able to admit to things Nas said as much as Nas was able to address what happened between him and Jay. Imo. Nas won the battle and the war by continuing to address things Jay said about him in a calm manner and admit to it in his side of the story. It was just as much about the aftermath of Ether as it was about Ether itself. Nas’s story telling in full effect.

I was in New York the day Ether got dropped listening to hot 97. I remember they played that song back to back-all day. People were calling begging them to play it again. Then Jay was calling radio stations trying to get them to stop playing it working his connections behind the scenes. He knew that song was an existential threat to his career. He had everyone with him calling stations explaining to dj's why Takeover was the real winner. I've never seen anything like that. Never saw Jay sweat like that... ever.

Just like 50 cent- Original "Lifes on the line" ja rule diss song. Nas and 50 were on the same label at the time. That 50 cent original song got industry heads and mob bosses angry. It is also the reason the label made Nas change his lyrics. They did not want another 50 cent situation on their hands. Jay Z also got Ethered by 50 cent on the 50 track called "Be a Gentlemen". After that Jay Z never mentioned 50's name again in a song. That "Be a gentlemen" song was on 50's Guess Who's back mixtape, the best mixtape in history, which had many labels wanting to sign 50.

I really love this video and the details within the commentary. I did have a question, I was not sure if Nas used word play when he implied "You Lost Already." There was a movie called "Highlander III," Christopher Lambert had learned a new sword technique from Mako where they lock up behind each others heads and spin in an infinity shape where Mako would turn out the victor. There is a saying during this time "You Already Lost." Was Nas was a fan of that movie and implies that Jay Z lost already coming at him with his current form?

9:43 Not what happened! It wasn't fast, cuz NaS waited _very_ patiently to drop Ether. Almost 3 months. Facts! This is what really happened: June 2001 at Summer Jam, there was only one bar directed at NaS in the unreleased Takeover. NaS and Prodigy/Mobb Deep responded pretty quickly with mixtape songs. Blood Money freestyle comes to mind. There were others from the extended crew, including some tracks from the late E-Money Bags (a famous gangster who dabbled in rapping with an interesting life story and who was the one Jay went through to try to reach out to NaS for a verse on Reasonable Doubt). Also NaS had an infamous radio freestyle mocking _H to the Izzo_ that allegedly was blocked from spins by Rocafella. But people in the business heard it and NaS promised a crazy album. Due to all of this, in September the album version of Takeover with a new verse going at NaS was released. Same day the planes crashed. This was when most of us heard Takeover for the first time. There were questions about how NaS was going to respond. For a while. Finally, December 4th, after a long wait where Jay was riding high on his horse for almost 3 months… NaS released the Ether / Got Urself A Gun single. On Jay's birthday. Now THAT is crazy timing. Lured Jay into a false sense of security. The story goes that Jay heard it that night in the club when a DJ played it. People close to Jay-Z (at that time) said he was trying to figure out how NaS discovered so much of the information in Ether. Who told NaS? Jay-Z responded 7 days later with Supa Ugly Freestyle, over the Bubba Sparxxx song of the same name. Because allegedly he didn't have enough time to get an original hot beat that was suitable. Similar to how earlier that same year in order to get an Eminem feature on his album, Jay repurposed a yet-to-be-released Eminem song meant for Royce Da 5'9" and his debut album. (Although it has been stated that this was probably more to do with Eminem's tight schedule and Jay's deadline).

You said that when it comes to battles, there are no limits. Well I call myself old school/ HipHop ! Born 1966. Yes there are limits to a battle in Hip-hop. When you cross the limits, there you find the price on doing so. Ex: Mr. 2 Pac and Mr. Biggie Smalls. Hip Hop is the spirit of my generation. It's about teaching survival and sharing skills. Each one teach one. It's all entertaining. That we naturally are. From the cradle to the grave. The best way to do anything. Especially teaching. So we have those that give you a vacation from your stress and we have those that show you why you're stressed and they understand , those that are their to reach you and teaching you about many aspects in life and then those that want to be worshipped by you. Regardless........Immediate Family, children, Mother's, Baby mother's etc. , are some of the things that you don't touch, ( I love me some Pac, all day.) Your bringing in negative into a realm that was invented for survival. Hit hard and good but we all know the limits been crossed. Everybody should. For the sake of survival. If you don't mind going down. Go down making a real difference. Mr.Nas and Mr.Jay-Z , both know. Nas fits best into my, trus blue. I love yah. Keep up the good work. I watch you often and will be watching you rise. God bless.
